Hi Harry, just snagged this kit as part of "The Model World Of Airfix" pack, so I'll be saving these build videos for tips! 😀 You did a wonderful job with this, as I have already watched the second video you did too. 🙂

This is how unboxings should be! I want to see the parts and know how they fit together and whether it is something that is worthwhile to build. I don't need someone to go step by step through the instructions and "interpret" the diagrams for me. If I couldn't see, I wouldn't be building models!! These older kits (like me-64 years old) are what got me started as well. Molded in "authentic colors" so you didn't have to paint them. Good morning Harry I love the airfix vintage classic kits I just finished the Bristol bloodhound nice little kit think I will get myself one of these you will have to get your mate a replacement so you can finish this one as always happy modelling mate 👍
Gday mate. Ya gotta build it now. I did one a few months back and realy enjoyed it. I rigged it with cotton and sprayed it with Airfix rattle can and it hung from the ceiling. Its worth buying folks.
New "old bugger" subscriber. I too remember this kit when it first came out. Built it then and after seeing this I will build it again. Cheers from the Great White North.
Please finish it Harry. I love these old beauties and have one of the early Airfix boxings. I’ll likely add a Vintage Classics version as soon as I see one on store shelves here. There was more than one in the fleet so I plan to build two models since they’re tiny in this scale - Heracles and Helena.
Another great little video. Cracking kit too. I wish Airfix had included a jig like that in all their biplane kits. I had a Tigermoth and that put me off biplanes for life! I cut my modelling teeth on Airfix kits. Back in those days they were pretty much priced according to the series number. Series 1: £1.85 Series 2: £2.25 Series 3: £3.15 and so on. I loved that as I always knew which kit I could afford and how good it would be. I still have the majority of my old built up 1/72 kits stashed in my roof space, must remember to take them with me! Happy times!
Airfix may not have been the best detail...but as a British kid they got me through to adulthood. I love that these classics are being made and need to get some....plus the new 1:48 Fairey Gannet. Thats a must for me...one of my favourite airplanes
@Ericlrl the newly tooled 2024 Airfix 1:48 Bristol Bulldog is a brand new kit… see their press release. The old 1:72 kit has been around since 1969 and re-released as a Vintage Classic in 2019
The nice thing is that the two fuselage halves will be able to be glued together, seams cleaned and painted before fitting the windows. This will save masking! The fuselage roof panels have seams at natural joins. I have one in a 1972/1975 box, so only limited flash. The box has the original McDonnell and East price tag ($2.75).
I built this back in the day and have an original boxing in the stash. I recently purchased the kit again and I'm half way through building it again I also have a 1/72 vacform by contrail. Love this plane. Build it Harry, build it.
Hello Harry. What a treat watching your response to this iconic model aeroplane. I built it new in 1965. Enjoy mate. adit: strange seeing it moulded in Grey. It was originally a pretty realistic Silver. Build it. You know it makes sense, and it's fun.😃

Good on you matey… Hobbyrama do have this kit in stock, well they did last night when I checked, but no doubt after my video there might be a rush to buy all available! LOL
Always like these reviews. Built this about a year ago and it was a fun build. Wish Airfix would package them a bit better though as the props seem to suffer damage during transport far too often.
My long running complaint with Airfix was about the suicide sprues loose in oversized bags… thankfully their new toolings are all framed and wrapped in tighter bags.
This is a super kit! Bought it about 2 years ago from ebay: several parts missing, etc. I made substitutes for the missing parts and assembled it. Nothing fancy, I did not string the many and complicated strut wires in wings and tail. But it was fun to build and looks lovely. BTW, Heracles is a better spelling, because of Hercules's tormented relationship with Hera, wife of Zeus.
Build it! :) Watching this has inspired me to track down a copy of this kit. I need something to make up for the Airfix WW1 bomber kit I cocked up a few months back.
11:55 Bravo Harry. The Brits, Anzacs, Canadians, Irish, Indian and all the other allied parties all too often get overlooked by American history rewrites!
The jig part is a brilliant extra. It works perfectly. The only other Airfix kit I can think of that included jigs, was their exquisite little 1/72 scale Sopwith Pup. That needs to return as a vintage classic.
I fell in love with this beautiful kit back when it was first released. I bought it then because of the name 😅 my favorite Greek Hero I remember building it but bungled all the delicate parts. I now have a new release in my stash. Please build it Harry. Becker doesn't like his planes with wheels and the Heracles' wheels don't retract😂
Harry - if you make the short haul "Heracles", the YT video title Heracles Airliner landing 1934 posted by R3EL clips has the sharpest high film quality I've come across for detailing purposes. I'd swear the cabin door is made out of wood (and I love the door knob).
That is a better quality than the other clips at Croydon Airport I have seen Nick. Must be direct from original film footage. Pity it is only a snippet.
I received this kit in a Airfix book gift set along with a helicopter kit. I was more interested in the book,I just shelved the kits. After this video,I'm going to dig out this kit now. Definitely going to be interesting sitting next to my 1/144 jet airliners.
A gentle aeroplane. Wonderful Harty. There is a great vid on the YT of Croydon airport from about 1935. It features these being services and made ready for flight. Cracking stuff Gromett. Onwards to the 10K you naughty man. 😁

Your RIGHT 😅 totally walked into that one duh! Useless fact the last one of these burnt out at Doncaster airport not far from where I lived at RAF Finningley.
Airfix and Tamiya . Two quality model companies that have been around for years whose kits l've always enjoyed building . Like that they're both releasing their vintage kits at reasonable prices too .
Nice, got a couple of early editions of this. Want to do one of the oob markings and the other WW2 RAF. One was written off not far from here at the former RAF Doncaster.
I would love to see this beautiful little kit built, painted, and weathered Harry! It would be great if you could fit it into your busy schedule. Cheers mate!
Lovely model Harry. I had to wince, though, then you started gluing the parts. I thought, no way back now! For what it is worth, I too hope you get to finish it, as the corrugated fuselage is similar to my Heller Ju-52 3m I have here. Would be interested if that corrugated bit presents any special painting issues, especially with using silver, as my plane will be a 1936 Olympics replica, also mostly in silver.
I have painted corrugated aircraft before, like the Junkers D2. The usual trick is to airbrush the first layer in a slightly darker metal colour, then dry brush over the humps with a brighter metal colour. This enhances the shadowing effect but keep it all shiny, unlike trying to run a wash which just drips everywhere and looks sloppy.
Charming artwork, model and build - in the vintage film, the long range SA version seemed to have anti stall slats🤔🤔 Great video mate, thanks✌️😊💜🤗👍 I remember that Studio Ghibli film, Im a fan, although some freak me out😀😀
I have since found film of the Heracles taking on passengers at a British airport and getting ready to take off. Interestingly the wing motors were all started from a small engine in the fuselage. The reel showed how the ground crew did that and more.
Artwork was by the amazing Roy Cross. He did the majority of Airfix box artwork back in the 60's and it always that artwork that got me in as a kid. BTW, he's still going : he'll turn 100 in April!
@@HarryHoudiniModels That's fascinating, remarkable aeroplane ✌️😊👍 Good find of yours too😊👍✌️In Centurion tanks they had a starter/generator engine, from a Morris Minor (A Series Engine) with a quill shaft, called a "donkey engine".
@@bunion8579 I didn't know he was still alive! Amazing guy! Amazing artwork 👍✌️😊💜 For awhile didn't Hornby/Airfix remove gun fire, burning ships etc from artwork as it may offend the WOKE (no matter the lies and atrocities the msm news trots out daily to keep us mad or fearful)? I thought I noticed recently that they've come to their senses and left the artwork original or added in gun fire etc? But following on, what is strange - although I know why - is a nice card box with a plastic bag within (to keep the parts safe). A sealed paper 'envelope' would do the same job🤔🤔 All this environmental woke stuff isn't very joined up to my mind. Whilst Carbon Climate Change is, as yet, unproven, we need carbon to live and breath, plastic bags are a mare, but they can be made fully biodegradable, but I'm guessing this one wasn't. Strange woke thinking - its all over the joint with these companies. I remember having to use the little form to order more spare parts that had come adrift. One of the worst kits I ever had was the larger scale Hercules (1960s era), broke my heart (early 1970s birthday present and terrible mouldings/parts missing), the form wasn't big enough, I had to write a letter!🙄😳😀 Happier times though, no plastic bags in the boxes back then.
The jigs were a good idea, but when they werent included in kits, my dad used matchsticks and plasticine to make his own. Ten or fifteen minutes nof additional work for the model, but always made the difference 😊
I dunno.. there is flash to remove and the engine nacelles needed some fettling to fit in place, plus a lot of injection marks inside the wings. Naw it is still Airfix with all the foibles and joys that come along with those kits :)
Great build :) of what looks to be an absolutely fantastic kit. Does it need to be rigged as well ? (BTW I'm sure Becker won't mind if you finish it for him now).
The real aircraft had wing rigging, but at this scale it would be so fine it is hardly worth it. Luckily Becker’s internet is down, Elon’s satellites don’t work in our tropical rain!
Each aircraft had different Greek Gods names , so no it is not spelt wrong. We did the same with the 10 Shorts Belfasts, that threw up some weird names
As I explain at the start of the video, and Heracles was not a god he was a demi-god or Greek Hero, father Zeus but mother a mortal named Alcmene who in turn was the grand daughter of another Greek Hero Perseus. I was very much into Greek mythology as a kid. The spelling jibe was just a click bait joke.
I have mixed feelings about airfix but often they were the only game in town when it came to between the wars aircraft in any scale for a good price. This kit looks good and flash free I can remember kits I built in the 1970’s that were new with more flash . Their HE177 Greif that gave me so much grief that I switched brands to Frog ,matchbox and Bandai and eventually Tamiya as these became more available in my local toy shop springs to mind. That kit was an absolute horror with so much flash it could have been a vac formed kit and I bought it with the new model star on the box . I am looking forward to you finishing this kit as it is an interesting plane and it will be good to see what it looks like with a pro build .
Surprisingly he was happy I had cut away the flash and injector marks… and took the kit back with the parts started saying “now it’s like a Tamiya kit and will click together“ LOL
He actually bought me another kit so I could still build the aircraft myself. And says he’s giving me all his Aifix kits from now on to review in the hope I clean up the parts and do any fiddly bits for him LOL
No-one left here but we boomers and Gen Xers Harry! Did Airfix ever put the HP 42 out in 1/72? It would look great next to the Ford Tri - motor (when I build it).
Airfix didn’t but I believe Contrail made a Vacform kit in 1:72 www.scalemates.com/kits/contrail-handley-page-hp-42-45--145617 and there appears to be a 3D Printed recent release from One Man Model www.scalemates.com/kits/one-man-model-8-handley-page-hp42w--1114974
George Volkert at Handley Page knew what he was doing. The structure is a Warren truss - lots of strong triangles. That said Heracles and another HP.42 Hanno were blown into each other by a gale and damaged beyond repair. Hadrian was blown over "cartwheeling" and ended up on its back in a separate incident and conset wrecked
Build it, Harry! In one single video you have done more to recommend this classic kit than Airfix could ever do!

Airfix and Tamiya . Two quality model companies that have been around for years whose kits l've always enjoyed building . Like that they're both releasing their vintage kits at reasonable prices too .
Three shekels for this one now… was probably 10 pence in the day LOL
That`s a nice kit
I thought so too
Nice, got a couple of early editions of this. Want to do one of the oob markings and the other WW2 RAF. One was written off not far from here at the former RAF Doncaster.
Nice connection to the subject… did the RAF versions have a different paint livery!
@@HarryHoudiniModels yes. Green/Brown upper sides. Yellow underside and RAF roundels.
I would love to see this beautiful little kit built, painted, and weathered Harry! It would be great if you could fit it into your busy schedule. Cheers mate!
Just need another 6.5K views Gary
The HP42 kit is great, I built one for a friend's young son's room. I meant to pick up another couple for myself but never got round to it. Gutted.
Should still be available after 2021 Vintage re-release
@@HarryHoudiniModels Hopefully it comes back, because at the moment it's not even listed on the Airfix website.
Hi Harry! American still subbed😂 I Have way more Airfix in my stash than Tamiya. Peace brother
Good on you matey… glad you were not offended by my little jokes
@@HarryHoudiniModels hell no I laughed. I love your content
Build it: ----- Build it:!
I will…. I will
Charming artwork, model and build - in the vintage film, the long range SA version seemed to have anti stall slats🤔🤔
Great video mate, thanks✌️😊💜🤗👍
I remember that Studio Ghibli film, Im a fan, although some freak me out😀😀
I have since found film of the Heracles taking on passengers at a British airport and getting ready to take off.
Amazing artwork 👍✌️😊💜
For awhile didn't Hornby/Airfix remove gun fire, burning ships etc from artwork as it may offend the WOKE (no matter the lies and atrocities the msm news trots out daily to keep us mad or fearful)?
Always worth doing that for biplane models
Lol😅, och no it was during the war, which predates me by about 10 years. Love your sense of humour, don’t lose it😊
It never leaves my side… or is that my mouth?
Not to swear at but that was almost one of those Tam shake and bake kits lol thanks for sharing
I dunno.. there is flash to remove and the engine nacelles needed some fettling to fit in place, plus a lot of injection marks inside the wings. Naw it is still Airfix with all the foibles and joys that come along with those kits :)
I'm glad to see the back of the "locate and cement" days of old.
Not sure if this is sarcasm, a compliment or a joke. Are you a shake’n’bake man now?
Jupiter (name of the engines) was Heracles' dad.
You are mixing your mythology but yes, Zeus was the father of Heracles, however Jupiter was the father of Hercules.
Finish it, finish it 😄
I will, I will!
18,800 views as of now! Don't forget the tail's rudders 😊
That’s subscribers… not views… my total lifetime channel views are over 3 million. This video has about 3.5K views so far… watch again!
@@HarryHoudiniModels🤦You are right!
8:49 that’s what she said
Hold on a mo… I do the jokes around here LOL
Thanks John
sorry becker lol, i sorta built it he he lucky there cheap and readily available
Surprisingly he was happy I had cut away the flash and injector marks… and took the kit back with the parts started saying “now it’s like a Tamiya kit and will click together“ LOL
hahah yeah you did him a favour to be honest should charge him labour cost or at least a tin of whiskers@@HarryHoudiniModels
He actually bought me another kit so I could still build the aircraft myself. And says he’s giving me all his Aifix kits from now on to review in the hope I clean up the parts and do any fiddly bits for him LOL
he is a good mate isnt he.... if you build all the landing gear down, he really appreciate that he struggles with it he he@@HarryHoudiniModels
It’s more fun than the “Red-light District” isn’t!
I would not know…. never been to one…
Just build it :)
I really want to…. only 8K views to go
Have you got enough to build it yet lol
Only 8K to go… how hard can that be?
No-one left here but we boomers and Gen Xers Harry! Did Airfix ever put the HP 42 out in 1/72? It would look great next to the Ford Tri - motor (when I build it).
Airfix didn’t but I believe Contrail made a Vacform kit in 1:72
www.scalemates.com/kits/contrail-handley-page-hp-42-45--145617
and there appears to be a 3D Printed recent release from One Man Model

10 000 just build it !
6.5K to go…. watch again!
Us geriatrics are watching 😉
Finish the kit, make sure you have plenty of silver paint 😂😂😂😂
I have half a bottle of Stynylrez metal… it worked a treat on my Matchbox 1:72 Walrus
I appreciate your compassion towards us yanks with the fragile ego 😂
I try my best to placate you… hehe
It needs finishing with your expert touch
I am already thinking of what extra details I could add to the build :)
The names are the same. One Roman, one Greek.
As I explained in the first few minutes of the video… you fell for the click bait.
Almost steampunk......
Well it was from that era, at least the latter part
These beauties look a bit fragile
That’s why they had string holding them together
George Volkert at Handley Page knew what he was doing. The structure is a Warren truss - lots of strong triangles. That said Heracles and another HP.42 Hanno were blown into each other by a gale and damaged beyond repair. Hadrian was blown over "cartwheeling" and ended up on its back in a separate incident and conset wrecked
Becker; this not your kit anymore.
Sadly no…. hehe… I will get him another
