- At last the Heracles build is completed. The Airfix Vintage Classic 1/144 Heracles is not a bad kit out of the box, but with a few additional details it can really look the part. This is the second video showing my scratch additions and the final paint job. Plus I sneak in some 3D printed rigging lines.

Finally! Glad to see you've finished my kit! I mean your kit....:D Its a ripper - now time to do a 1/72 one? Back to the ships I say!
My stash has a 1/72 Herc hole you are welcome to fill
Beautiful work Harry ,
Thanks matey
Thanks Harry, I personally appreciate your scratch building. For me, scratching building adds challenge and complexity which is enjoyable.
Glad you enjoyed it Cos.. was a fun project for me
Well done Marta good to see someone doing some old fashioned scratch building
If I have an itch…. I scratch it ;)
Nice going Harry, she's a real beauty! It's amazing how well that kit has held up.
It is a simple but nicely engineered kit. This is why Airfix was so popular back in the 60s and 70s, their kits were fun.
Looks great mate what a lovely old kit 👌 👍
Thanks Anthony 👍
Very nice build Harry, All the little details really make it come alive.
Thanks. The scratch work was fun and pretty easy to do
So the twelve labours of Heracles have finally been Completed well done Harry she turned out to be one hella fine ship
Yes that is enough of the flappy trials and tribulations for me. Back to the wet stuff now
I love it Harry! Beautifully finished piece with some wonderful additions.Thank you for showing us mate.
My pleasure Craig
The handle at the top of the tail is the elevator trim . Nice job Harry.
ahhh never seen on like that before….
Hi Harry, It looks great👍🏻. I like the 3D printed rigging, very clever. Good continuation👋🏻
Thanks Yves… I was surprised how easy the 3D rigging was to make and install. More of that in future builds.
Fine job! That's one that will look great on the shelf. I really like those unusual inter-war designs.
It’s going straight to the poolroom!
Well done Harry! You've done Heracles proud there. I live about 30 miles (as the Heracles flies) from the former Croydon Airport, directly south of the centre of London, where the HP42's used to operate from. Would love to see an airworthy version taking off from there now.... but the Purley Way (the main A23 road out of London to Brighton on the south coast) would get in the way, In the HP42's day, they stopped what little traffic there was to allow the aircraft to take off and land. A little impractical today,.... More importantly, that build is proof that older kits are still as valid today as they were when they were first moulded in the 50s-80s. Look forward to the next one. Cheers from the UK.
I remember reading an article some years ago I think it was in Aeroplane Monthly that a group where looking at a rather ambitious plan to build a full scale replica of the HP 42 not sure if it was to be static only or airworthy.
Good on you Shane
@@timorvet1 yes there was. I saw the father and son whose project it was at a couple of air collector fairs around that time. They were trying to raise funds by way of subscriptions, but were very secretive about a lot of the project. Huge sums would have been needed, like millions now. They claimed to have all the original drawings and specifications, and had reproduced a couple of metal pressings used in the original construction. I guess it was far too ambitious as all of the technical stuff would have to be approved, even if replicating the originals. They did have a fairly basic website for some time but it was all dreams really. It went very quiet, the website disappeared, so it appears to have fizzled out. The father wasn't particularly young at the time, so I guess he may well have his own wings now...
You've done 60's Airfix proud.
Yep… took a while
Excellent Harry! Well you know ...not bad. 😂😂😂😂😂
I will take a not bad and 5 smileys!
So cool, looks amazing, well done. Maybe put a 747 Jumbo or a Concorde next to it …..”The advances in aviation”. So glad YOU enjoyed doing it too👍
Thanks… I built a Concord model about half a century go when they were flying. Might keep an eye out now for a 1/144 kit.
Never mind the missing "C" Harry, decals can be a right pain at times, this turned out really great, well done! Loved your 3D printed rigging and all the scratch building you put into this, too. 🙂
Thanks matey.. I appreciate your kind words
Thanks for a great kit build all those hint and tips all a long and look forward to the next video did miss watching on a Sunday morning
Good on you John
Enjoyed watching you do this - picked up useful tips. Turned out well. Good video too. 🇬🇧
Glad you enjoyed it Stuart
Very nice Harry. Great job on the printed rigging
I have been making 3D rigging for sailing ships for a while now so I used that knowledge to test the idea for bi-plane kits. Would work better in larger scales, but surprisingly does the job on the tiny Herc
Core, that looks lovely. Nice job mate 😉
Thanks Basil 👍
Looks great! 👍
Thanks John
Ah mate, what a cracker! 👏👍👌 It's turned out far better than I imagined Harry. It looks an absolute beauty. Those extra additions have certainly made a massive difference to the model. Exceptional skill and patience Harry! Very well done mate! 👍 Loved this series, really enjoyable. Thanks Harry. Another build completed too! Only ........ to go! 😁
Thanks 👍 Less than 20 WIP to go now :)
Excellent! Great job. I built one of these years ago, and it was a struggle--bought it on ebay and parts were missing, had to carve (yes, carve) substitutes. Looks beautiful. Thanks for showing it, and working on it, even though you are primarily a boat person!
Yes a bit out of my depth with this subject but had fun building it non the less.
Same experience, mine was missing a vertical rudder
Well done Harry man
thanks Edwin
Well done laddie and it looks bloody good to me, I would be proud of it as well you should be. Good day mate and maybe a few cans are in order. Cheers
I gave up chroming.. it left my nose very shiny
Nicely done Harry. Bonza mate. 😂👍👍😉
Good on you cobber
Your Aussie vernacular is amusing, Harry. Well done on a classic kit.
Stop looking at my vernacular… not cool dude! Hehe
That looks real good Harry, I think I’m going to start on my kit around Christmas when I’ll have more free time. All your tips and tricks in this build will come in handy. Thank you mate. 🤗
Good to hear Ronald
@@HarryHoudiniModels ❤️😀
Very nice Harry!
Many thanks Finlay
Good job love it!
Good on you David
looks good
Thanks
Many thanks for the tips. nice build.sorry for the c decal on the side….. your videos are a must forme. Cheers
Yes you got it… missed putting it on with my frustration over folding and tearing decals. Was fixable on the Portside but can’t be repaired on Starboard
Nice done, Harry.
You've done a great job of an ancient kit.
I am an ancient modeller so we go hand in hand
Beautiful build Harry , i may need to have a bash at this kit myself !
I highly recommend it Steve
Cool model. 🛩
Thanks matey
Wonderful work Harry really enjoyed following the build love the tips and the scratch building. I have started looking on how to do simple things to bring my models up a level instead of straight out the box.
It is very satisfying to add your own unique touch to a model. Beats shake’n’bake
Congrats on finishing, Harry . This has been a classic Harry Houdini Models aircraft build . I'm assuming that no work deadlines , injuries or illnesses were involved . Well done !
I have had a bad flu this last fortnight… you might hear the snuffy ness in my voice, but I pushed through and got the build done nonetheless.

Excellent H at last it looks fantastic, you should make up the scratch interior and sell it ,l will have 2 of them .
thanks.. I plan to put the 3D stl files on my website for free upload.
Thats great mate ,l just have to find a 3D printer service around here l think mybe office works.
Ah, Mr Harry, THAT, is a very nicely done build, very well done my friend, well done. The propellors are made of laminated layers of wood, usually different grades for rigidity. Did you notice that the propellers are actually 2 propellers, one mounted ahead of the other ! Ease of manufacture, 2 singles and easy to replace one if damaged. 4 bladed props were made but costly etc. A simple trick i use to dissolve small amounts of superglue is acetone with a small brush or stick. Doesn't damage plastic parts, BUT, will destroy ANY painted surface on or near your working part ! Nice build job on the Venturi tube, trickly little part that. Your Airfix Bulldawg has both a venturi tube and a small wind driven generator, i think mounted on the lower wing near the top front edge (from memory). Just arrived here is an Airfix 1/72 Gloster Gladiator, mmm, wires, struts but no full length interior frames, haha. Cheers mate, Gaz 🇰🇷🇦🇺
Thanks Gaz
I built one of these when I was a teenager back in the 1970s. I was really pleased at how easily it went together and did a really nice job of it. I did have trouble with the four decals on the corrugated fuselage - no products available then to soften them into the corrugations. Any reason why you did not use these?
You've done a really nice job there.
Although I have successfully added decals in corrugations on my D1 Junkers, it was however a far more sensible 1/48 scale.
Looks great. I did rigging with nylon "cotton" thread. Then i sprayed all the silver and guess what.... All the thread went frizzy. D,Oh!!! How many have done that before me. Looks ok tho' hanging from the ceiling.
You need to wax cordage to remove the furrys. I do that on all my sailing ship rigging.
@@HarryHoudiniModels Never heard of it. What do you do? Is it paintable?
Excellent aircraft Harry. I figured out your mistake (when you said it I thought "No, cannot be!!" The callsign letters under the wings are on the correct wings but should face backwards and the words Imperial Airways should be on either side of the fuselage under the windows aft of the wings. Does I get a gold star sir lol??
Sorry all out of gold stars… but thanks for figuring it out. I could not get the tiny “Imperial Airways” decals to lay down on the fuselage corrugations, so gave up on them. As for the underside…. hmmm… I just followed the Airfix paint guide, but then I do live down under so must have read it upside down. But my big mistake was not putting the full callsign on the rear sides. There was one big decal, then the optional extra letter of C or F to designate Heracles or Hermes. Ooops.
Awesome work, that kit (which is a charmer) has really been lifted by your super detailing.
Ive just done similar to a couple of broken, second hand, 7mm scale vans. They had generic doors - all in a Blue Circle Cement livery. So I added top of the door brackets a representation of a lower door catches etc - the upper and lower hinges are incorrect but to change them would b@gger up the livery. The small scale manufacturer (a late friend of mine) had to use the main production run tooling (very expensive for IMP) the generic common or garden doors etc (tbh these models were a first in 7mm and I missed out on them, especially the special liveries - due to the PLANdemic. I happened accross two damaged ones, that had been dropped and bodged, so the remedial/ making good took longer than my mods and weathering 🙄😲🤫).
When all was finished I let down the bright yellow, applied rust effects, then "cement dust" and the jobs a good un.
Theyre a little out of era (early) but charming, unique additions that cost very little with parts bin repairs and detailing.
Its surprising how small details or representations can lift a model from good to great.
As long as its fun and liked by the builder/owner then alls well that ends well. Cheap hobby/pastime too✌️👍😊💜
Alls well that ends up on RUclips :)
@@HarryHoudiniModels 🤫🤭🤔😉😀😀😀💜💜👍✌️
Great choice with the wood props. They did look like the WW1 4-bladed props on Handley-Page 0/400 and 1200 bombers. Why change what worked?
If you got wood you’re a happy man ;)
Great finish to a classic model, you should do the Handley page 0400,iv had one for about 5 years to do as I planned to do garden wargame with the ww1 kits mounted on rods, only about 25 kits to build of the fighters and light bomber to build.
I have reviewed the H.P.0400 kit from Airfix. Might build it next year. Back to ships for a while for me now.
The little horn sticking out of the triangular tube on the nose might have been a venturi tube, which was a 1920's air speed instrument.
Apparently it draws air then pumps a pneumatic system in the aircraft.
If I'm not mistaken this is the second model completed on the channel this year. And both old Airfix aircraft kits.
I did assemble the Airfix 1/48 Bristol Bulldawg new release kit a few months back, and am still needing therapy due to that build, but had not painted it. However I did finish my Doyusha 1/72 Stingray in January. So yes 2 kits completed this year. That is a 100% increase on last year. I might also have the Warspite done and dusted in the next few months.
My comment wasn't meant to sound critical. I meant that it shows you like the old Airfix kits (and you did a great job with both). And I realized too late that the Stingray was also completed. Bulldog unpainted, unrigged...doesn't really count as completed.
no problem George I was just being clear and surprised I had actually finished 2 this year
I didn't c the decalling issue until you showed the STB side.
Yep that is the mistake… didn’t leave room for a sea!
Looks very nice indeed. Can't find any fault with the decaling? BTW, if I ever get my ships measured for the 3D-rigging that I wanted, I'll ask you to include a set of the Heracles rigging as well :-)
Just measure the length at the waterline, diameter of main mast at the point it rests on the deck, and also the height of the main mast from the deck to the first platform. With those few dimensions I can extrapolate the rest from plans.
@@HarryHoudiniModels I have to find them first in the stash...
If you can't C the mistake, it doesn't exist. Nice build.
Words of wisdom
Your missing a C on the starboard side Harry! Strange, normally a bloke can be driven spare by the amount of C's on the interwebs.😊
ha ha! Very true. The decals have the C and F seperate so you can set insignia for the Heracles or Hannibal. I had already put the first decal side strips on aligned up to the cabin windows and only realised I had left off the C after completing all the other decals. By then they were set so I could not slide the starboard one aft to make Cing room. Oooooops.
🖐👍👍
Thanks
Eye "C" you're missing a letter
He he yes I am
There were no HP42 accidents that caused any casualties until Hannibal was lost in a relatively short flight over the Straight of Hormuz in 1940. They were flying dunnies. Conspiracy theorists could have a field day.
Thank you for the toilet humour.
