Guys, I told you this off season the focus is to get to 90 wins, and pitching and especially bullpen! So now we get a depth piece on catcher, a depth piece on SP, the next move is two more bullpen arms with one a big one can close. Tanner will not be so quick, there will be a bidding war and Boras will make him wait. But we can trade for Helsley or Miller. Then they will wait to see after Soto signed, who will desperate to trade for Cody. If they can trade Cody, they will get a big bat. So just wait and see if the moves can add up to 90 wins! I don’t think Jed think offense is a big issue last season, if you look at the numbers, it was not that bad. He thinks the bullpen is the issue, if the bullpen did not got so many injuries and Neris did not work out, the offense will not be that in the spot light that much. He ONLY admitted issues with bullpen! So you know where he would focus on if you read carefully what he says. And I think it is a right move since we need to give so many young bats chances, UNLESS a Soto which they did check in. All other big bat free agents all have glaring flaws ! So I think it is a good plan. Fans only care, only know, only get excited on big names. And at least half of the big names don’t work out if you look at the history.

If Jed thinks hitting wasn't a problem last season, he's incompetent. Hitting betrayed the team in May and June and sunk the season. They did recover somewhat, but the damage was done. And the pitching regressed after being stellar in May and June, but it got squandered. The rule of thumb is that hitting accounts for about 60 percent of the game. So you'd be smart to focus on that side of it.

Also I expect the Cubs to do very little in any department via trade. I could see them dumping Belli for a Mid level reliever , and then maybe a Hoerner and some prospect to Seattle for George Kirby. But that is a massive stretch in my opinion.
Jack Neeley and Benjamin Cowles will be the fill ins . Cowles takes the Patrick Wisdom / Nick Madrigal spot. Neeley fills the spot of the arms cut from last year.
Those are the Cubs big moves ...they already made them last year

So the Cubs signed another grizzled, old vet? True to form. And why isn't Cade Horton even mentioned? As of a report dated November 8, he is healthy and expected to have a "normal" offseason. After listening to your show, it sounds like the Cubs wouldn't have the money to get Roki Sasaki. Landers of Fan-Sided suggested the Cubs will move on from Cody after the Boyd signing.

  • @naturallawman2965

Alot of fans think Counsell = strategy OVER spending. Problem is -- that's not true. It's the issue I have with the Hoyer/Hawkins-regime spending BIG cash on junk-ballers like Morrow (Theo-era), Smyly, Boxberger, Fulmer, Neris, Hendricks... and now Boyd (among unlisted others).
It just feels... like Jed was the guy responsible for flipping Arrieta & Strop. And that is his main strategy. Buy low, rebuild the engine, fix the transmission and turn a base car into a Hellcat. Problem is, that's rare. Lightning struck twice, once, with the boys from Baltimore that helped the Cubs to a ring. And it seems like Hoyer keeps trying to do it it with buy low/high-ceiling project-players via trade or reduced cost contracts. No one in the mainstream media (other than Kap & Rosenthal) have held his feet to the fire on the "projects" that were utter failures. Granted some of those were with Theo as President, but Hoyer was his Colonel underneath Gen. Epstein. In the last decade i'm sensing a lame theme and all of them involved Hoyer's decision making and Ricketts skittishness to spend on superstars. THAT... has been the bane of the Cubs existence since post-2016. They keep trying a recipe-for-success that failed to yield anymore fruitful results MANY years ago. Time to either change, or get out the way and let someone else try something different.

They are either avoiding "Biblical Losses" or they are prepping to sell the team (and possibly the wrigleyville nonesense as a package deal). Most owners wanting to future sell a team don't sign anything meaningful, just contracts that are super short term. My cubbie tin foil has is a bit snug.

The Cubs are the best bargain bin shoppers in baseball. Congrats on consistent mediocrity, Cubs!
The trouble with the Boyd signing is it's the Cubs playing in the bottom tier of the FA market again. It's not that they massively overpaid for him because he's getting around what was expected. The problem is the Cubs should always be playing in the upper tier of the FA market with the Dodgers and Yanks, but they never do because they're CHEAP!
Moves like these that we've consistently seen for the past several years proves the Cubs are not serious about contending for a World Series. They're not serious players. You almost never see the Yanks and Dodgers make all these cheap "depth" moves. They target great players and get them. The Cubs should be doing this as well. They can afford to do it, but choose not to.

But they still need to get a number 2 or 3 starter. They do that, get someone to get outs at the end of games, and someone in the middle of the batting order that can slug a little, and they'll be a playoff contender in 2025 barring injury.
