My husband was from Hazard, Ky. He showed me around were he grew up. That was in 2000 and there were places that even he wouldn’t go to. He had a lot of family there to this day. He passed in 2010. Hey Kevin and fam I hope you're having or had a good Easter but here's an expression and you'll definitely pick up on it I remember when I was a little girl and somebody said no matter what happens to you in life where things take you wherever your journey takes you don't ever forget where you came from seems today a lot of folks seem to have forgotten where they came from do you agree with that does anyone else in the comments agree with that a lot of people either are or have forgotten where they're cut they came from whether it's good bad or indifferent I didn't forget where I came from and I always try to make sure that wherever I am going or whatever is happening I try to leave it better than the way I found it or leave it how I found it whatever it may be life has taught me a lot in all these years one thing it has taught me is never forget where you came from

Another great story and I believe every word of it! The small rural town I'm from still has only 1 traffic light after I've been gone 75 years. The original police station was on the corner by the light. There was a button on the outside wall we could push to get a better look at the cars going through town. One day a big black fancy car was stopped and we kept it there for a while until someone could read a name on it. It was a Chrysler New Yorker!

I never got questioned on my heritage until we moved to Florida in the summer of 92, I was 10 1/2. The first thing out of the other kids mouths was, Are you German? You must be German cause of my blonde hair and blue eyes. Yes my nationality is german and my ethnicity is caucasian. I also got asked what Detroit was like, um I have no clue, I grew up in Ypsilanti.
It just floored me how much pressure the kids put on me about heritage, like why does it matter?

I have mountain folk on my Father's side. His Mother was Irish and they lived in West Virginia. I had pictures of HER father who was a blacksmith and a Marshal. My favorite picture of Great grandpa Doyle was of him with a fiddle on his lap and a parrot on his shoulder. She also said they were NOT Irish, but Scotch Irish. I will find out the truth when I have my ancestry done. I have always been drawn to Irish music, so we'll see. Makes no difference to me. I love Bluegrass too.

Reminds me of a story my dad used to tell us about this cave, where this guy found an old man with his parrot who could speak.he said "My how old are you?!" and the old guy says " If you think I'm old, you should see my father!" And as this man keeps going deeper within this cave, he keeps encountering an older and more ancient man with a parrot (each looking like from a different generation, until he finally meets this little old Pirate guy, crotchety one toothed, and barely able to get the words out: "Well, if you think I'm old...you should see my...father..."

I’m a McCurry...Scott’s-Irish. I’m guessing my people came over in the famine times in Ireland. I was adopted, but genealogy searches have my family line going back to the Inner Hebrides about 7th century, then I lose track with name changes and spellings. Between the time I was adopted, inn1950, and the arrival of my relatives here, mid 1880’s ? is where I lose the family line, unfortunately. They were from the mountains of N. Carolina. John and Edna (nee Waldrop) McCurry....so, about 70:years of history is all it takes to break the chain. I looked for decades, but there’s an abundance of McCurry’s in them that hills 😂👵🏻😂. Enjoy your channel greatly! Thank you!

I was born and raised in the northeast but my folks and entire extended family have deep roots in southeastern Kentucky and farther back the James River area of Virginia and Guilford NC. My heritage is absolutely Scotch -Irish and the influences of Appalachian Bluegrass music. I spent many many long summers and holidays there among those proud honest hard working miners and mill operators, and some Old Regular Baptist on Sunday ; ) There is a feeling traveling down there, when the foothills of Ohio give way to the Old RT 23S into Kentucky that tho I'm not native to the lands and mountains and hollers, I strangely belong to it, like DNA connection. My ancestors worked hard at a life carved out of land they had to fight for, to escape persecution with little more than hope for freedom to live their chosen way making sure each following generation had equal or better opportunity. When I learn about them, and try to imagine their lives, my heart bursts with a fierce pride and a bittersweet longing to visit with those folks, just as they were, and say tell me about your life!! Thank you for your stories, they tap into my memories, listening to the old folks tell stories. And above all, thank you for your service to this country Sir, blessings!!

The Irish were mostly discriminated against because they were Catholic, as opposed to the majority of existing Americans who were Protestant. Wikipedia>> "In the Early Modern period following the advent of Protestantism in Great Britain, the Irish people suffered both social and political oppression for refusing to renounce Catholicism. Irish racism in Victorian Britain and 19th century United States included the stereotyping of the Irish as violent and alcoholic.[18] Some English illustrators depicted a prehistoric "ape-like image" of Irish faces to bolster evolutionary racist claims that the Irish people were an "inferior race" as compared to Anglo-Saxons.[19][20]
