OVERLANDING HAS MADE ME FAT, so I hike up to Lone Pine Lake (9999 ft elevation)

  • On this random adventure I was on 3 days ago (November 6, 2023) I decided to travel to the town of Lone Pine, CA to gear up and drive up to the Mount Whitney portal to hike up to Lone Pine Lake. This lake is just off the main trail to Mount Whitney, which is the tallest peak in the 48 states of the USA.
    I use to hike on a regular basis, but ever since getting into overlanding, the activity of off-road driving has replaced activities that I would find exciting. Also, I find that many people that go overlanding just aren't really into taking on a challenging hike like Lone Pine Lake.
    The primary reason I went on this trip was to test out the EcoFlow Wave 2 and it's "Heater Function". Find out if it worked!

      I ended up getting Pneumonia, first time in my adult life. It’s “walking pneumonia”, so I didn’t realize I had it until I took a chest Xray a month after falling ill. I’ve had on and off fevers for a month. The good news is that I’m down 20 lbs. now 😃 and nearing recovery.

      That a good point. I live at sea level and then went up to this lake at 10,000 feet. Whew! My body wasn’t very acclimated to these elevations

    Jon, I feel the same way about my EcoFlow wave 2. I’ve been disappointed by it now on both heat and cool. I tested the heat at King Canyon last month and it never heated up my tent at all. It wasn’t that cold either

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  10 месяцев назад

      My EcoFlow rep got back to me,
      And she said the Wave2 is meant to operate between 41F to 122F. I’ve been happy with it working as an AC, but bummed to find out it won’t work out for my winter adventures. I guess I’ll just have to use a heated blanket and maybe a little heat boost with the Mr. Heater buddy.

    Love Lone Pine, next you need to try hiking into the Big Pine lakes, they are beautiful...! I slept in the back of my Passport up in the Bishop Creek area and the water bottle I had in there with me FROZE (meaning it was under 32). I have a zero degree fleece-lined sleeping bag, so I was ok..

    Walking on an incline burns more calories then running on a flat surface. Keep up the good work! We also are confused by overlanders, we use our rig to get into difficult places in order to explore and hike. We don't have time anymore to spend 2 weeks hiking to a location.

      We do as well Mike, and looking forward getting some hiking in when we finally get on our first trip together. This hike was just a bit more on the challenging side. The last time I attempted it, I was 240 lbs, but I was with the Wife and she wanted to turn around. I’m actually very surprised I was able to complete this at 290 lbs!

    I’m very disappointed with my 2019 Pilot 😔
    Got the injectors failure (#2)and need to replace all of them but I can’t seem to find them anywhere nowadays , back order and some say discontinued part number.
    It has 32000 miles , there’s a warranty extension for some up to 2019 but not my 2019 !

    • @JonDZ_Adventuring
      @JonDZ_Adventuring  10 месяцев назад +1

      Dang, that sucks Rey. I chatted with Manny K20NARTPRO and he said that for some reason the Pilots have a strange ECU that acts like an injector driver for the direct injection system. Honda made the Ridgeline / Passport a little more robust in the regard. Crazy why there’s variances with these models. Just like Honda gave all Ridgelines from 2017 to 2023 these low definition infotainment touch screens, and they gave the high definition retina displays to all Passports (and I’m assuming pilots).

      I wrestled in high school and did cycling century about a decade ago. I use to eat 4000 calories a day to maintain. I know what it takes, But I just don’t have the drive to train at that higher level. I feel like I found myself again on this trip.
      I’ve heard of the many heart attacks from people pushing themselves too hard here, so I made sure to take breaks. Thanks for chiming in though, and weight training is part of the problem plan. I’ve been trying to do 100 pushups minimum per day for the past 4 months, but, I’m not consistent. I can still crank them out tho 😃

      Different kind of weight training. Training for longevity. You need to catch up your knowledge on exercise and aging. You’re super smart on travel stuff. Point some of that brain power in the direction of your health and wellness. The weight training is a good idea. Every aging person should do. We lose muscle big time. Get Peter Attia’s book, “Outlive” and get a crash course. 🎉

      Before I bought my SUVs I had a Subaru WRX with a rooftop cargo box. I wanted to get into back packing. I even went as far as buying an expensive 75L Osprey backpacking bag. When I traded to a Subaru Forester is when I figured out I could just drive to these places I’d want to back pack.
      Yes. Surprisingly, hiking and overlanding don’t go hand in hand for some reason.

      hahaha. Yeah, it makes sense.
      Yes, true. Especially in USA, but I think it is similar in many places.
      I never plan to overland and there is no such thing in Japan. We park on tarmac and hike. Just different environment.
      I still enjoy geeking out and there are always good advices I use.
      Saying that, I hunt in Japan and for that Forester is great. Ground clearance and good AWD comes in handy.
      Work hard in your health. I’ve lost 20kg /40 lb myself so I understand the journey you entered. Good luck

    I can relate. I started my journey on Sept 15th. I'm down from 220 to 206. It's mostly food. No more hot pockets. I changed to a low carb/high protein diet and a 5k every morning. (at least 5x per week. I also do 100 push-ups. I started with 20😉). My goal is 180lbs. I love Overlanding combined with hiking! This works for me. and won't for others. Doc. told me I can't out exercise a bad diet now that I'm over 50. Best of luck to you✌️.

      That’s awesome! Keep up the great work! Not going to lie, that thing I was eating was a hot pocket I bought from the Lone Pine Gas station 😖.
      I’ve been doing 100 push ups a day as well. I need to get back into kettle bell. I dropped a lot of weight doing those types of workouts. Thanks for the best wishes. Hopefully in a month or two, I’ll have good results as well.

      Hey Dewey! You never struck me as someone that was out of shape, but skiing is really good exercise. 3 years ago I started snowboarding again. It’s a great way to keep myself in check. If I’m not at a certain level of fitness I get tired so fast and my legs cramp up.

    Hiking is actually the worst thing to do for an out of shape person. You are putting a tremendous amount of stress to your body and increase your stress hormones which hinders you from losing weight…and also increase your risk of a heart attack. It is more beneficial to do walks at your local park, or even a treadmill if you got one, then go for the easy to moderate hiking trails. Work your way back up, slow and easy.

      Well, I was 290 lbs. here, down to 255 now. Looking to drop to maybe 235 before hiking Half Dome for a 2nd time in my life (17 mile, 6400 ft. elevation gain)
