  • Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki is...it's everything really. I mean it's a space opera, romance, slice of life, harem anime with aliens and a cabbit that's also a spaceship. Tenchi Muyo is unlike any other anime I've ever seen, here's why.

Tenchi Muyo! Ryo-Ohki utterly surprised me. A show I really thought was just going to be another generic harem anime instead was something so unique, so special, that I had to make a video on it to show everyone else who hasn't seen it. Tenchi Muyo is one of the few toonami anime that I just missed when I was younger because the couple episodes I did see didn't interest me. But when you watch the whole thing from beginning to end, the pieces and pacing fall into place to reveal an anime that overlaps more genres than any other I've ever seen. It's a piece of art that is absolutely worth your time because nothing has ever come close to doing what it does before or since it's release.

Nice! I will be 32 this coming Sunday the 18th actually haha!! I watched Tenchi Muyo, Tenchi Universe and Tenchi in Tokyo all on the original line up on Toonami. It changed my life, truthfully. I laughed, I thought deeply, I was broguht to tears...no other "Cartoon" had ever effected me in that way. Tenchi will forever be my favorite anime for that reason. People I dont think understand how different things were back then and how revolutionary the Toonami lineup after school was for the US. If I must admit, Tenchi Universe is my guilty pleasure. It focuses more on Tenchi and Ryoko. ughhhh but she is also so beautiful when she dresses formally in Tenchi in Tokyo!!! She is my Forever Waifu!

I loved Ryoko, in the OVA. It’s explained that like Tenchi she really didn’t have a normal upbringing. Kaguto damaged her mind when he enslaved her so, she struggles with emotions, her fusion with Zero helped bring some of them back and she is dealing with how to understand and control them. All through the series she has only the strongest emotions that influence her, but she is consistent in that she fell in love with Tenchi, she just doesn’t know how to be normal about it, hence the blatant sexuality she shows him. But when she thought Tenchi was killed you could see that her love was real, the heartache she felt at his lose and the determination to get revenge against his killer no matter what happened to her. That really set her apart from the other girls for me. The others care about Tenchi, Ryoko would die for him so strong is her love.

As I got older, I ended up feeling that if anyone _"deserved"_ Tenchi (not to imply anyone "deserves" love more than others, but you know what I mean here) - it was above all Ryoko. With most of the others, it's basically like they showed up suddenly and it's like "Oh, he's hot/handsome/kind/interesting, I want him" and/or "it's my destiny, so I must have him" - Ryoko is the exception.
Her connection to the Jiraians is that of a defeated villian. We know now that she had more dimensions to her past and flaws than simple _evil,_ but she was a captured criminal all the same.
However, she literally watched over Tenchi from day one like a benevolent spirit guardian. Someone thought to be purely malevolent was _BENEVOLENT_ for Tenchi. Tenchi basically redeemed her character over his lifetime without even knowing it, and then (accidentally) gave her back her freedom.
Those are pretty legitimate reasons to fall for someone. And she also knew him long enough to truly do so on her own, all while probably knowing his Jiraian identity and not being affected by bias and/or vengeance. And she continued to redeem herself as a character alongside him. He made her a better person, and someone more than some demon/pirate/experiment thing - an actual person with wants, feelings and a life.
I dunno, but the stark contrast of her backstory and connection to Tenchi compared to the other women always stood out to me. It's the very reason I prefer Ryo-Ohki more to the other versions because of how her character is the most fleshed out here.
Also, Ryo-Ohki is just the most adorable ship/cat/rabbit/child.

    • @aculdra41554

100% agree. I always felt Ryoko had a special connection with Tenchi, and i think Ayeka knew this. In Tenchi Muyo Forever Ayeka let Ryoko go to bring Tenchi back cause she knew that she couldn't. Ryoko was the one connection he couldn't forget.

    • @TheMeloettaful
      @TheMeloettaful 2 года назад +5

@aculdra41554 that right there is the thing that sticks out to me concerning Tenchi's connection to Ryoko. Out of all the girls she is the one Tenchi couldn't forget. So much so he draws her picture even if he doesn't really know who he's drawing.

i agree with all that you said here, though that connection as seen by the other replies is still critical to both the tenchi universe series, and even the tenchi in tokyo series where in techi and ryoko actually go on a real date uninterrupted by hijinks or other girls. moreover i believe in the hasegawa mangas (which is the basis for the second movie) the built in assumption there is that tenchi and ryoko will ultimately be exclusively together.

@@CGoliday1 The relatively overdone and not that amusing to begin with 'Pervert' scenes with his dad always trying to video or peep on the girls, it's a typical anime trope and one that always bugged me back in the day as it always felt contrived and more than a little sleazy. It's kind of magnified by the idea that Tenchi's mother was supposedly a serious and respectful/respected woman, so her marrying Tenchi's dad the way he is portrayed really feels disconnected. Tenchi Muyo is probably the only harem type show that I genuinely like. Compared to most anime that are like it these days, Tenchi just feels like the writer actually gives a damn and didn’t just want a story about a self insert power fantasy getting it on with a bunch of lazy waifu archetypes. Not all the girls fall for Tenchi just cause he exists, they all have a diverse range of personalities and needs that aren’t just centered around Tenchi and the story takes it time to make you believe the relationship the ones that did love Tenchi have with him. It also helps that there’s a lot of crazy lore and drama centered around the alien wars, politics and so on. I didn’t like the whole “higher dimensional gods” thing, but even that puts it a step above other harem shows that have tried but failed because they failed miserably at it. Tenchi is the standard and it’s sadly never been repeated or done as well. Love this show.

I saw pretty much everything that was on that network back in the day, but even seeing that there were other series like War on Geminar kind of blew my mind that it was still going.

Reboot in my opinion doesn't get the love it deserves for what it was. The creators took a huge gamble with the design of the show, and if you're daring enough to actually watch it from S1 all the way through, you literally see the evolution of an art style in real time.
Combine that with (really starting in S2) a really good story and strong characters, and you've got a masterpiece of a series.

As a guy who grew up with 4 sisters and all of them having vastly different personalities, I think you explaining how tenchi needs those different personas to keep him stable while going through such turmoil is something I think all guys can relate to.

The difference is Tenchi was a harem anime that focused on the comedy of the interactions with the very different girls' *personalities* and mashed together mostly-subtle parodies of many different sci-fi franchises ( eg. lightsabers, a space pirate with a fuzzy companion, a guy with pointed ears makes a cameo in the galactic peacekeepers' HQ in one of the movies ) and didn't have to have it all about the oppai.

I absolutely agree 100% with this whole video as a long time fan. At the end of the day, Tenchi is more about found family for a bunch of displaced people with Tenchi being the anchor that keeps them all together despite it being a harem anime. I always loved that and how fleshed out and important all of the girls were. At the end of every adventure, they always come back to the same dinner table to eat together and spend that time together despite their differences. It's a series that's a fun scifi romp, but somehow always cozy to me even without the nostalgia it carries.

I don't understand why people don't like Tokyo. Is it the part where Tenchi has an actual character and acts like a normal high schooler? Is it the part where Ryoko has an emotional arc and you see her actually do space pirate stuff? Or is it the part where Kiyone has a healthy relationship with Mihoshi and doesn't just yell at her the whole time? What about the part where it has a consistent central antagonist that isn't just a retread from the OVAs?
I'm genuinely curious why a show with good writing and characterization gets dunked on by so many people in the community. Don't get me wrong, the OVAs will always be my favorite, but Tokyo is leagues above every single other spinoff and reboot as far as I'm concerned.

I revisited it to continue Ry-Ohki to see it's finale and I was so lost and the narrative flew over my head. Still loved the franchise, Tenchi Universe is my favorite of the Tenchi Mulitverse. The craziness mixed with the quite mundane is something that it gets right and I think that's what I really loved about it as a kid, I just couldn't explain it. The ladies of Tenchi Muyo are the best because they all have different personalities and I can see why it pioneered the best "bae" or "waifu" bandwagons in the USA. Just you breaking it down and explaining the Goddesses, oh man, this series is alot better than it should be.

Listening to you during this was giving me big time "Long Lost Brother" vibes. I still adore it because I had already spent a couple years preaching about and converting my friends to the glorious world of breathtaking animation and design...but with cuss words, violence, and cartoon bewbies known as (it still embarrasses me to fucking death that we ever called it this...ugh) "Japanimation!" However, it was not until the day Tenchi Muyo premiered on the one and #OnlyToonami that I was introduced to my first harem series, and my instant love of this show should only need three words of explanation, if you want to guess them...
If you guessed "teenage boy. duh," then POINTS!
And strangely enough, it remains my favorite of the genre because unlike absolutely every harem series that came after, it's one that for the most part I CAN watch in public (Shout out to Curty the cutie over at Beyond The Bot. Also sorry, Curt the Conqueror, because we the audience are never letting you escape from hosting THAT series.). Furthermore, the act of watching Tenchi, again unlike every last harem show that followed, never made me take a shower immediately afterwards because I had wash off the copious amounts of humiliation and shame in which I was then left covered from head to toe.
Top shelf content, as always, Ser.

In high school I had a friend who we sometimes referred to as Tenchi. He was a dead-ringer for the character, the only thing missing being Tenchi's rattail. And, just like all the space ladies, I had a HUGE crush on him... my friend, I mean, though Tenchi was a pretty decent guy, too.
I was such a fan of the original OVA they showed on Toonami; I was big into Sailor Moon around that time and was thirsting for any new anime I could get my hands on. I remember wanting to get into a series that was a little more mature, and Tenchi came along right at the perfect moment (although I didn't realize *how* mature till I bought the uncensored DVDs; I still can't believe I didn't realize Ryoko's blue bikini was added digitally in the Toonami version, it was so obvious, lol). I loved the art style, the characters, the premise, the plot... it was all so new and intoxicating and interesting and fun and the story was confusing but I loved that about it. The English voice cast was also great. All these years later and I still have my Tenchi DVDs, a handful of manga, plus my old Ryoko figure.

The Tenchi OVA is a pretty fun and culture series. The rest of the AU series is a maze to get through which was pretty good. Ryoko is Best Waifu and Aeyka Best Girl.

Tenchi Muyo OVA 1 is still my favorite anime to this day. It seems to be underrated now, so thank you for doing a video on it!

I got into Tenchi through Universe, those are my most prominent memories. Definitely would love to see a deep dive into that one. One love Mike ✌️

Tenchi is like a weird hybrid of Star Wars, Smallville and The King Arthur Legend. In other words it is awesome. Think Steven Universe minus the LGBTQ stuff.

Nobody tell this guy about MihoKiyo or Naja, cuz Tenchi gets gay as hell the deeper you go.

I’m one of the hardcore fans. Just randomly doing my random search in the middle of the night every few years and found your video. Haven’t finished it yet! Hope I like it lol thumbs up and sun anyway just for making a video on it.

This was great! I think you really nailed it with the “wholesomeness” point. I’ve tried watching other similar anime and they only come off as fan service. Tenchi is different. It was the first anime I showed my wife and now she loves it too. You should check out the Tenchi Fans discord. Also, there’s more episodes I haven’t seen! Crazy news to hear! I’m out of the loop. The other alternate. Universe of Tenchi is excellent as well. You should look into watching it and do a video on the differences between them. I’d love that!

The show that helped shaped my taste in anime besides Dragonball and Gundam.

This was such a well-articulated comprehensive review of this series. That experience of Toonami's Tenchi Muyo and Tenchi Universe always confused me. I had no idea that this series was SO expansive and I'm even MORE intrigued now. I just always remember that feeling I had when watching Tenchi Muyo, but never really understood why. Why I liked it, why I wanted more, why it worked. Thanks for helping put it all into perspective and making sense of my otherwise very confusing memory of this series!

Ryoko was my first anime crush...think I was 12. Didn't know they finished the series beyond the first two seasons. Lost interest in my teens because all moe is trash, even tho Tenchi isn't moe the whole trend change late-aughts made me knee jerk away from anything resembling. Felt it had so much story potential though. Kind of wild the OVA was finally actualized into a deep philosophical tapestry on existence...funny with the show's whole playfulness with sexuality. To think it got meta on the idea of creation is pretty hype. Also stay away from weed you def are psychologically not the type that should be smoking, period

I just stopped by to say, I don't remember how I discovered Tenchi Muyo! But after I saw Tenchi Universe I was hooked... I own tons of Tehnchi muyo media, including a poster on my wall.. My all time favorite anime... Oh, and I'm a Ryoko guy ;)

Ryoko is “waifu commander” lol OK you’re a guy so whatever, I mean I get it she’s got pretty eyes and a phenomenal voice actress for most of the series, I liked her a lot when I was younger but now I realize how much more there is to like Ayeka. Her hairstyle/cut to this day remains the most unique and ironically appealing thing I have ever seen, dark purple hair and fuchsia hewed eyes and fucking Jeniffer Darling, The British Minnie mouse herself…
Anyway I just had to get that off my chest but i’ve thoroughly enjoyed your interpretation of the all around wholesomeness… There were some spoilers but I generally appreciate spoilers😂 so that’s fine, I might have to check out the fifth season you said that just finished filming this year?! I’m so glad I clicked on this video!
