  • 1st is Conventional is the slowest but best for knotty softwoods with a maul, which is the slowest and hardest on back as you have to lift the full weight of the round.
2nd is the flick, takes most experience, danger of hitting axe on the ground but is the fastest despite having the biggest knot even in this case.
3rd is what I would call making boards, great on straight grained hardwoods in particular, you don't have to lift the full round and the boards are easy to handle and fast to split up into small pieces. My favourite way for ash wood

Ben, is that Ash? Looks great, nice straight grain nothing to gnarly. I like the "flick" if no chop block in around. I'm not an expert of the practice just tinkered with it a little. I've been using my Fiskars X25 splitting axe with a 28 inch handle a lot this summer. I think it splits better than my Husqvarna 2800 and I like it better than the Fiskars X27, I've become a fan of smaller handles the last few years. I've helped five neighbors this summer split wood. I think a split 3-4 cord conservatively. More than any other season ever. That's a good chunk for casual work. I can split a face cord in about an hour and forty five minutes, depending on the grain of wood.

Beautiful white wood Mr. Ben, ash I read...did I see the slightest bit of mushrooming on the axe in the last frames? I hope that is not offensive, it certainly isn't my intention but I am curious sir...

Did you ever try Stevens Rawhide brace? Works pretty good for me. I did't even stich it, just used woodglue.
