I've been doing this sort of thing for many years, here's one of my favorite tips for you, cut your saplings after the leaves fall off and cut them much longer than needed, keep them for at least a full year before you remove the bark, boiled linseed oil is my choice to seal the ends
30 years ago, my son and I were walking in our woods and I cut out two young hardwood trees for walking sticks. I peeled the bark off mine and left it on my sons. Mine lasted about 12 years and I just called him in California and he still has his. It's as hard as steel now. He's been a Marine since 2009. Thought I'd add, we let them dry naturally and his never cracked a bit
I don't peel mine anymore, either. I do have a peeled Ginkgo biloba staff I "made" during a Field Biology class in HS that's lasted 25 years but I did use guitar strings to reinforce the bottom crack.
I cut sticks year round, dry them with a heat gun or open flame, to straighten/ dry them. Apply clear coat. I make them for walking sticks and Escrima practice batons. Most of them last awhile and are hard and solid with good weight
Not really true 😂 it’s best to cut in winter for the reason you stated. However, it’s always best to cut it when you find it for 2 main reasons. Firstly if you leave it till winter you can bet your bottom dollar you won’t be able to find it again! And secondly there’s a very good chance some other sticky will have found it and had it away😂😂
What color live tree down when you can get a dry Dead branch my thought is that everybody get upset of people cutting the forest what do you think he’s boing?
Because many trees will grow right back? Coppicing is a thing, as is getting rid of trees growing next to one's foundation. Black Locust can grow 12' a year after being cut clean to the ground. My poor fence knows this from experience.
Thank you for making this video, it’s always good to see the full process, plus I really like the idea of cleanly taking the bark off so there is almost a modern feel to the end stick. If you’re interested I’d love to see your thoughts on my first attempt on a walking stick (video just released on my channel)
I use hazel wood and I cut it in the winter then the wood is seasoned for a year. Hazel is good because it re- grows very quickly it's called coppicing.
@@theodorehowe2262Honestly, Uke makes a good point. Sure it's nice to have a well made heirloom stick but, if you can make your own, then why does it matter? It's the same question I ask about specific stave finishes. If you can refinish it or make a new one...do you really need to use Polyurethane floor seal?
@@elzbietadobrowolska9200Blackthorn, virtually any oak, olive, yew, etc. Basically any moderately hard wood will work, even Hazel or Filberts work fine.
Thanks for the video….though I thought that fellow was right about cutting down that living tree. I felt myself involuntarily cringe watching you. I believe you forgot to mention what that black dip was. I’d really be interested in knowing that if you wouldn’t mind responding.
You knew this would bring out the saps, I mean tree huggers. But like the rest of mankind, I am sure you ignore them too! You can responsibly find these saplings
It's all fine and dandy when it's one person doing it. What if theres 100,000 people cutting down hardwood saplings to make a profit? I am in no way a sap, but responsible woodworkers source their products from fresh dead fall, not from young saplings.
Cut the tree off at the base to coppice the tree. Cut with the saw to the side of the body. If you, cut with right hand, right leg supports the branch saw to the side.
Your long and detailed explanation as if you are doing a very big and difficult job is interesting.I must say that the work done has no special features for me. I could easily do the same with a simple knife, hand drill and a piece of broken glass. Every job is good, but there is no need to strain.

So, you cut down green living saplings to make walking sticks? I'm sure if you look about 5 minutes harder, you'd find fresh dead fall and not kill a young tree to make a profit.
@@mzondi1970 so, let's just say that every wood worker near forests goes out and cuts, let's say 10 saplings a week, to make canes and walking sticks. That's 40 trees a month for just 1 wood worker. I know at least 10 cane makers. That's 400 a month. It grows exponentially every person that salvages live wood. You can't be ok with that.
A lot of unsubstantiated assumptions there don't you think? It's like AL Gore and his rationale for abandoning incandescent light bulbs for fluorescent.

calrgomm9699, I agree, this cat is cutting the sticks too short, thought he has presented a good project otherwise.

thanks
Nice job......you show each step so it is easy to follow ! I enjoyed watching ! Good looking walking stick !
Thank you!
WTF!! You cut wood in the summer …. That’s totally wrong !!! You have so mutch sap in the wood !!! Only cut sticks in the wintertime!!!!

Восхитительно! Просто восхитительно!
What did you dip it in ?
What did you gain with all the shop work rather than cutting the stick to the desired length in the woods and continue on your walk?
Money? I am thinking he might be selling the finished product.
I like the rack you used for sanding
What is the correct kind of sander to buy? Orbital?
I use a orbital sander, and 80 grit, 100 grit, and 120 grit sand paper
what stops the bark from falling off in 6 months?
I use Slack finish

What's the length of this stick. Great skill though❤

Kimmon, what is the dip you are using for the end?
He used a black coloured tool-handle dip. I've mostly seen orange, red, or yellow colours. You can find it in hardware stores.

How do you get permission to use the woods? In my area it is all private property and I don’t know how to get a location for getting saplings
just ask the owner
I wish it was that simple. Plots are not easily marked by ownership,at least done in my local area

The video recording quality is nice, but the subject is ridiculous. Why use such complex tools in a situation where one sharp knife is enough.
