Using cakes is also an easy way to get yarns that are already selected to look good together instead of trying to search and search for colors that go well together.

It’s my 1st time running across you. I don’t even know your name right now, but I have to tell you how refreshing you are. You were sharing about people not being very kind on u tube. I’m Sorry about that, I don’t communicate on u tube. It’s my first time, Just had to let you know. I watch shows on knitting and crocheting. I can’t do either anymore because of neuropathy, but I still enjoy and find it very relaxing to watch. Keep doing what you do, love it. SD

You're giving me a new appreciation for color control. I agree its not a waste of a self striping yarn because for me the benefit of the self striping yarn would be having someone else choose the colors that will look pretty together. That is constantly my challenge when wanting a multi-colored project, deciding which colors go well together. Often I would never imagine a combination of colors combined in a Mandela, but they end up looking gorgeous together.

Thank you thank you. I haven’t been crocheting very long and the striping yarn was very confusing. I didn’t like the breaks when you don’t color control. Sometimes the colors you want, only come in the cakes. I had that problem when I made a blanket for my Daughter. The boarder ended up a darker color than one in the cake, because I wasn't buying enough cakes to finish with the same color. However, the darker color I used made the original cake colors POP.

I just want to thank you Crystal for your tutorials. It has been extremely helpful to have a knowledgeable crocheter that is willing to teach others. It has meant so much to me. I haven't the female family or male for that matter, as my Granddad Tatted, left alive to ask questions too and most of my friends do not crochet. You have a wonderful personality and I have been so thrilled to find you. Also your family is a joy to watch on your blogs. I have wondered for so long how others were able to make the patterns turn out with even colors. I hated that it would have a few stitches into the next row. So this has been so helpful. I didnt know that the cakes came apart like that either. THANK YOU !!!!!!!

Ya know, discovering our preferences and learning more about how to get consistent results is always valuable. We don't all need to have the same preferences, but any new skill is more than welcome in my book. 😘
I prefer an ombre fade, but that isn't always possible. Sometimes, I like to be 'surprised' - but the changes are too abrupt. Thanks for teaching options, Crystal. That's truly the mark of a good instructor. 😍

I am a solid type of girl. I rarely will buy cakes because of the different colors because I usually do not like all the colors together because of how it breaks or even one of the colors that are in the cake. Now it gives me an option of buying the cakes and just using the colors that I like especially when they do not have the same colors in a solid skein. Thank you Crystal!

I totally understand how & why you do color control. And you are right! Sometimes the color changes aren't that different but sometimes they are! Guess alot of it depends also on what you are making! It reminds me of little ones who are learning to color. 2 of them might be coloring the same pictures. Say the pic is a kid on the beach. The kid in the picture is dressed in shorts & a t-shirt. One might color the shorts one color. The other one uses 4 colors to color the shorts. It's the same concept. Great explanation Crystal! Thank you for doing this video! 😍💕

I usually only try to color-control when joining a new skein/ball of a self-striping yarn. So if the first skein ends at a certain point in a color sequence, I try to start the next skein at the same point or the very next color in the sequence (and will check each skein - at both ends - for the best match, if I have multiple skeins of the same colorway to choose from).

Talk about timing! I bought a skein of Hobby Lobby's Yarn Bee Sugarwheel licorice jellybean to make a hat for my Granddaughter Mia. She loves colors that are ombre. Looking at the skein and staring the hat, I was afraid the color gradation wasn't fast enough. I started pulling it apart in Hope's that I could get the color changes I want. Your video was in my messages and I have to tell you, you have given me the courage I need to cut my sections out!! Thank You for this Video!!

Another great instructional video. What I’m taking away from this one is this: When the color changes are very subtle and basically the same color scheme it’s not really necessary to color control, but when they are a lot different color control looks better. Thx Crystal

I love the way you do it. If I cut them out, it would be a mess. Lol That's a great tip about changing the color order, I hadn't thought of that option! :)

Thank you for sorting out these yarns and color control/ not color control. Not having crocheted for a long time I’ve been struggling to understand what the heck is going on with yarn colors!

I like that the cakes use complementary colors and I sometimes color control like you do and sometimes separate the colors and change the order of appearance. thanks for the video. love your thoroughness and care.

Sometimes it's more economical to buy the cake with all of the colors than buy 5 skines. Then you can still control the order of colors as Crystal showed. Your always the creater and on control of your projects. Learning that you have options is awesome 😊.

This isn't something I had ever considered. Thank you for sharing! I really appreciated your message near the end that everyone is creative in their own way. Very nice. :)

If projects were all same size & stitches color control wouldn't be needed. Which is why color control is used 👍 thanks Crystal your channel is great!
