Golf is expensive, the green fees in Oklahoma are not going down. Golf lessons are high, driving range prices are increasing. Golf is killing itself.

Golf is a sport that was originally designed for the elite. Only the wealthiest of men could participate. A sleeve of balls would have cost 1/2 a years salary for an average worker. Now everybody can play at a reasonable price. Calling today's golf expensive lacks perspective. It only feels expensive right now because of inflation.

I so appreciate your approach to golf and teaching. I stopped playing about 15 years ago. A huge reason was I didn’t get better. Took a couple lessons from guys who really didn’t seem to care AND when you have a line of retired guys who play well behind you on the 1st tee box only to sigh when you messed the 1st shot up…well you get the drift. I’ve picked it up again. It’s winter in Alaska so indoor driving range and simulator here I come. I just don’t want to be embarrassed. Being placed with others at the course scares the crap out of me. Need to get more confident

Biggest reason for most people currently is soo many people are playing now compared to the 90’s. Early 2000’s when I used to play. Left the game for 20 plus years. Recently came back. I can’t believe how crowded it is. Everyone playing speed golf. No matter where you go You can’t relax and enjoy. Someone’s always on your ass pushing you. It’s nuts

I've played on and off since my 20s, and started to get back into it last year with a friend who said they wanted to try it. I'm also a lefty, so finding deals on clubs takes a lot of patience. That hasn't kept me from playing though. Each time I've stopped its been because my main golfing group stopped playing or it was my time to focus on family/career. Now that I'm a dad, I can take my kid out to practice. We have a set of junior clubs, but I think the part she enjoys the most is the post-practice snack at the clubhouse. I'm glad there's a positive association to the game we're building together. I agree with pretty much everything you said, if you do some searching, you can definitely play the game on the cheap, including lessons. It is an inspiring game, and it can be a humbling one, but if you take care of your body you can enjoy it well into your older years.

As a 20-25 handicap, I am quiet quitting because it costs too much money to learn, practice and play. Though I love it, I can do other things in as much time for $0.
Instead of actively booking and playing at least once a week, I’ll
play only when there may be a fun tournament or when a friend who plays occasionally calls to play. Many friends don’t play at all.

I've never seen so many people playing and I dislike it honestly. It is difficult to find tee times on the weekend. I've been playing since 2010 and I've never seen a new course open in my area but have seen them close. All the private courses have a year plus wait as well. But I agree with the expense of everything!

I nearly quit 2 months ago. Long story short, I only started in November but I came out of the trap quick and was quite good starting off then after 3 months I got the yips and couldn’t hit one single ball straight for 6 weeks, literally zero good shots. Took a break and just watched hundreds of tutorials from yourself, Rick shiels, get good at golf and a few others, realised it was a simple fix, I was bending my right arm at the start of the back swing and my grip was super weak like my right hand was under the club. I’m back now tho and approaching 20 hdc

Great subject. I have significantly reduced the frequency in which I play. It may be for all the reasons stated by others or some combination of them. When I think of my primary reason to not play the game though, it’s my frustration at not getting better at the game. I watch lots of you tube improvement videos, I’ve taken lessons and really honestly, I’m getting worse. My handicap has been as low as 18 and now it’s up over 20. I’m just loosing sight of the most important part of the game, enjoying it.

Really agree with this. When I first started golf it was deemed cheating if you tried to move a ball buried in thick rough so it'd sit up a bit more. Recently played with a friend who's just started taking up golf. I'd tell them dont make it hard on yourself. We're not trying to put the lowest score possible - just out to have fun and hopefully learn something or 2 about the game. Then as they get better and have the basic fundamentals then they can tackle the more difficult aspects of golf.

LOL...waiting on a tee...taking a wedge and practicing is exactly what I have done for years! And little chipping game...I cannot tell you how much money we used to bet on that game! Also, at least 1 or 2 rounds per month I will play with only irons. Hit short irons off the tee and long irons in...lay back to around 100 yards and use a gap wedge, then a PW, a iron and so on. Try rolling the shots on to the green instead of flying on to the green (more links style). Fun stuff!

hi from france, i am an old golfer, the main difference is that everything has become too much complex: a) courses are too much sophisticated ( greens, bunkers fairways) summer they keep on cutting the grass shortwhile before summer meant high grass. b) the equipment is too much evaluated , tehrefore it means having a sphisticated swing, c) pricing is horrible even with greens fees + buggy+ 4-5 euros for a bucket at practice range!!!!! and on top, those sophistiction means that player are too much trying to play good, along with all the tips and tricks , and spend over 5 hours playing 18 holes. 5 clubs in bag are sufficient, Slow greens means more 2 putts, shorter courses, means more second shot with iron on the greens rather than 3 shots, and as a conclusion more fun becaue more or less everybody is playing the same game.

  • @jonassandelin256

As a newer golfer the thing that was most difficult was pace of play on course. I was always concerned with making sure i was fast enough, and usually i was. But i've played a couple rounds with new golfers that have been very slow, had the course marshal all over us, clearly upset golfers behind....thats not fun at all and would easily make new golfer quit. More time on the driving range would be good, but there should be a way for new golfers to play rounds without the pressure being put on them.

    • @goth_ross
      @goth_ross Год назад

My advice to new golfers. What’s that old saying. It’s okay to suck as long as you don’t suck slowly? That sounded bad lol. But you know what I mean. Maybe Keep extra balls and take a lot of drops. Don’t look for balls for more than a few seconds. (I used range balls on the course my first year) it was fine. I’d lose 12 plus a round. Don’t sweat score. Not till your better. Just keep movin it forward and Generally try n hustle a bit. This was my default mode When I started. Makes for a good workout as well. Be ready at your ball when it’s your turn. Don’t take a lot of practice swings. Common sense stuff. And Sometimes you will be the one waiting for others. And you can just hunt for balls while you wait. Good times!

In my opinion, we had a ton of people join the game for lock down and now 2 years later they still suck and golf is exspensive and they probably werent realy committed in the first place so much like my driver they just fade away from the course. Also add in that in my local area every golf course is booked out, charging record high green fees, and record low maintenance. Golf courses here are beat to death and they are charging 100$ to play sunday morning. And even tho the course is beat and the fees are high you still gotta book a week in advance. They want you to pay up front for all players in the group on one credit card then someone bails for legit reason but now someone is left haveing to pay for a person thats not there. My friend was run off a course on hole 10 because only 3 showed up and he put a freeze on his credit card before they could run it for the 4th guy that no showed. So on hole 10 the course marshall and someone filming came over to tell them they had to leave with no refund or compensation for the other 9 holes even tho all 3 paid for 18. That said i almost quit this year cause i let my game slip and i couldnt handle geting worst. I decided as a last chane i would quit playing and became a range rat. Im taking lessons and hiting shots everyday. I just recently started playing again and the scores are dropping so im starting to enjoy golf again.

Cost probably isn’t the issue people are buying cheeseburgers for 10 dollars now and Uber food to their house. There are plenty of people willing to waste money. Im 45 and play regularly with different groups of friends that play. I think that is the key finding groups you like to play with! I also think if your a super high handicap and just want to have a good time I recommend at the very least being able to bomb a drive over 225 yards off the tee makes the round much more enjoyable everyone loves hitting bombs

Golf magazine just had an article about how much we need to tip various people at the course, as well as all the people we need to buy a beer. So on top of start-up costs - clubs, shoes, maybe some clothes - and greens fees + cart, the magazine's editor wants us to know we need to bring a couple hundred in cash for tips and free drinks to the masses - every stinking week. That's a pretty good deterrent.

The best way to not be tempted to quit is to say to your self. I am going out there to enjoy my self. It can be hard sometimes, but the positive mindset is improving your game over time. Your play gets better even not realizing it. Hunting HC can be frustrating. Train with a 5 iron on the range, if that's the difficult one, and play with the 6 iron on course. Amazing
Play golf and you will have a great time, for soul and body. Cheers

6 hour guy is probably being sarcastic, but there are public courses in CA where it can take a solid 3 hours to play a front nine during twilight on a Sunday when the price drops at 3pm. That three hours includes wait time on the 1st tee. Usually the back nine goes way quicker. Some course layouts are flawed leading to way too much backed up play.
Concerning tees. Some courses don’t have more accommodating tees than the blue, white, red that are hastily spaced 10 yards apart. I’m usually less concerned about somebody playing improper tees than someone straight up playing an improper course. Learn about Course Rating/Slope before choosing a course unless your options are truly limited. What looks like wimpy 5,000 yard tees can still be a long day on a tight, tough course
9 hole early bird or super twilight rounds, executive courses and par 3 tracks can be a fun time even if you think you are too good for that stuff.
I’ve played with “I’ve been an 8 handicap since high school” who can’t break 90 so many golfers of all handicap ranges can act like they are pros. Dude, the course record went out the window after the par 5 6th you quit on. Relax and let’s just smash driver and maybe pull off enough shots to make this worth the $$$.

I want to quit golf because this game is killing me. This game has led to both neck and back surgery, and now my left sciatic nerve is killing me. Have to go to PT, get an MRI because another surgery is possible. The fact this game is destroying my body alone is the first reason why I want to quit. Next is the time it takes. It requires way too much time in practice and in play. Golf moves backward not forward. I've spent tens of thousands of dollars only to go from shooting 70's and low 80s to struggling to break 90. Then there's the negativity. I'm sick and tired of hitting good shots only to end up with bad breaks and bad luck. Flush a drive down the middle and runs behind a tree. Flush a shot clips a branch lands in the water = double bogeys or triple. I'm sick of it. I hate this game. I just want to sell everything, get rid of everything and never touch a club play again. In the meantime, I have a new club arriving tomorrow. Understand?

I hav to disagree, it is so expensive to play golf these days, greens fees are actually going up because there are so many people playing now…. So in addition to it being expensive, it’s also more crowded, so you can’t get a tee time…. And indoor simulation is not a cheaper way of doing it, heck it’s more expensive than the real thing…here in Mass everything is astronomical expensive…maybe where you are it’s cheaper but not here in the northeast

Practise everyday and everything looks great then I go to a course and I always beleive they are terrible courses. Literally bushes infront of green entry and dog leg lefts tight fairways trees always in the way and bad lies full of mud or burnt cart paths. You can only be good at golf if the turf is consistent and the course is open enough to smash a drive. I’m all for laying up but not a 6 iron off a par 5 tee block. I can shoot anywhere from a 78 to a 106. My days are rly good or I want to quit. Today I hit 3 chunked wedges per hole because of swamp ground.

Regarding the time it takes to play a round, I have some news for you. You don't HAVE to play a full round of 18. I have two kids, a wife, two dogs, a band commitment, full time job, and we're in the middle of building a new house. It's a lot, but I make sure to set aside time for golf. Would I rather go play a full 18? Sure, but that's not realistic most days. Find courses closest to you and go play 9 holes. Depending on the course and time of day, I'm done with 9 holes and back home in 1.5 hours. That's a lunch break for majority of folks. On the note of it being "too hard of a game", you need to stop taking it so serious. Enjoy the highs and more importantly the lows. I'm in the middle of lessons and changing a lot of things, but I keep a level head. I'm not trying to make the PGA Tour guys. You shouldn't feel like that either. Just one good hole should be enough to keep you coming back for more.

I only have 3 reasons to quit. Cost? Well it's not that bad to play public courses 25 to 30 bucks to ride for a senior, so I put that last on the list. Gotta add gas cost too. #2 would be how I play. The worse I play the less I want to play visa versa. #1 reason I will quit is I don't have anyone to play with so I'm solo. I don't like to pair up with Joe who knows every round. If I play as a single I wait. I can play 18 in two hours so I don't enjoy waiting on other golfers for 2 hours to play a 4 hour round. When it's really hot out is the best time to play. As the weather cools it starts to get crowded. i quit for 12 years because of reason #2.

Courses have increased times between rounds so its even crowded during the round. A ton of players play on the wrong tees, everyone wants to play tips/pros and can't even hit in bounds. There is also a ton of aggressive players looking to fight on course for hitting into or getting hit on or getting denied by cart girl.. For me the worst thing is the overall time commitment. It starts when you get into the Pro shop and they are the least bit busy. Paint dries faster than they move. Then your off to the range with 75 balls you have to pay an extra $12 for. Good luck finding any grass to hit off. Now its 5 minutes before tee time so you head to the starting hole and guess what? There are 3 groups sitting there. So you tee off late and lucky you ends up playing behind the slowest foursome in the Universe and 5 hours later after having to wait at each shot you are finally done. 45 minute drive home and then the wife says what took you so long? I will never turn pro, I probably will never drive the ball 300 yards. It's chess in fluid real time motion. I am definitely lucky. Here in Milwaukee Wisconsin, we have a great public course system. There's a lot of different courses to choose from. Seems like since covid, tee times are hard to come by here. I don't see signs of that slowing down where I am. Have fun with it! Don't quit people, pivot. See what happens to your score if you try to lay up on every hole. Divide the yardage of a hole mathematically into realistic chunks of distance that will leave you salivating, not frustrated. Or just swing for the fences every time, I'll see you in the trees!

I think the things that sustains them the most: 1) they see the walking part of golf as a healthy way for them to walk and sustain their health. They’re probably one of the healthiest and mentally sharp 70-something’s that I know. 2) golf is a social game, and they have made many friends through playing over the years. This latter part is what I’d like the current golf community to be mindful of. Being friendly, courteous, and understanding of beginners as they are learning the game go a long way into creating a much better impression of the game and its players. Too many times these days I see rudeness and aloofness at the course that would be off-putting to beginners.

enjoyed the video, back in the 70's most golfers walked when I started and there was a starter who put folks together. Also back then if you were by yourself people would ask you if you were alone if you wanted to play with them. This was common. Does not happen anymore, and when playing with friends I will ask solo players if they want to join us. They are shocked and they appreciate it. I live in Florida and the cost during season is high, for an average course can be $80 dollars for a round. Too much for me. I got lucky and joined a member owned course for around $400 a month and I keep my cart there for $30 bucks a month. Now I play every day (retired). I Agree when you upgrade your clubs give your old set to someone starting. If we do not get more folks into the game courses are going to close. Most golf courses barely break even anymore and this is a course without any debt. Lets be ambassadors to the great game and help facilitate more play.

Too many new golfers (probably covid ) with a lack of etiquette eg. Groups of 6 playing together, loud music from cell phones on the course, people playng from the wrong tees, folks jumping around the gof course with no regards for the groups ahead or behind them, slow play and it's $$$$$$

Golf sadly is due for a recession, the cost to play, the cost of equipment, and the long time of play are most certainly contributing to the decline of golf.

I love playing a round of golf all by myself, very relaxing. However, I absolutely hate being paired up with strangers, which in my experience is most often what happens if I book a solo tee time, or even a twosome. Absolutely my least favourite thing about golf. It’s particularly uncomfortable if you (or your partner) lack confidence or just aren’t very good. I wish there was an option (a box to check) when booking to choose whether or not you want to be paired up. I get that the course is just trying to maximize guest counts, but for the price it costs to play a round, the option should be left to the golfer. Can you imagine booking a dinner reservation for two only to get to the restaurant only to find out you’ve been paired up with a random couple to share a booth? Lol that would be ridiculous, right…?

Not in golf. In fact I like being paired with someone else. Besides playing golf sometimes you have a front row seat to some amazing golf strikes and birdie opportunities leading to camaraderie. Anyone can pick up the game go to the golf course pair up with someone and find golf companions very easily. I've given away my phone number more times than I can remember running into like minded golfers.

@@breeze787 Nothing wrong with that. I don’t doubt that there are many, like yourself that enjoy it. My position is just that it should be openly optional. Not everyone has the same level of social openness and should be able to golf comfortably, regardless. And shouldn’t have to be subject to dirty looks from starters and clubhouse attendants. Whether I’m in the mood for a quiet, solo round or I want to bring my wife out for a nice afternoon, just the two of us. Or maybe I’m catching up with an old friend. Or maybe I am in the mood to meet some new people. Either way, I’d like the choice to be mine. Also I find it’s especially rough on beginners. It’s one thing to stink in front of someone your comfortable, but to have to struggle around complete strangers can be really embarrassing.

naw just embrace it. 95% of golfers are crappy anyways, no one really cares if you suck as long as you keep up pace. ive def gotten assholes a few times but overwhelming majority have been cool peoples. i met my current biz partners at the local muni. ive played with golf course workers that now hook me up with free or discounted golf.

@@CAxALLDAY I hear ya. I don’t think that it always sucks to be paired up. But when it does suck, it sucks. Example, just last week I met up with a friend for a twilight round. Luckily it was just the two of us. Played a scramble and made it through the 11th hole before we had to call it a night. It was great. But had we been paired off, we would have been lucky to get through 6, and that would have sucked. I’ve also played many rounds with randoms that was plenty fun, that’s not my point. All I’m saying is that it should be optional. I don’t thinks that’s unreasonable

Would you be willing to pay double for the unfilled tee time? Because that’s what it would take. There’s no way the golf course is going to lose out on the revenue.
