OCTOPUSSY | Acrostar Jet

  • Bond gets out of a scrape in OCTOPUSSY using the nifty Acrostar ”Bede” Jet. For close-ups of Bond manoeuvring the jet through a hangar, special effects supervisor John Richardson mounted a plane on a pole attached to a stripped-down Jaguar. The car was driven through the hangar at breakneck speed, soldiers running in front of the car to hide the chassis.

To be fair, jet engines aren't actually picky. The specifics of the burner might need to be modified, but it isn't like a piston engine that needs to have it burn only at a certain time and speed. It's absolutely possible that lighter oils might just work.

I really like the opening with the jet but having said that my brain over analyzes everything.
When the jet enters the hangar at that speed, he would have exited almost as fast as he entered.
Also showing Moore in a model tilted and slowed down, the prop holding the right wing is painfully obvious.
Other than that and the Tarzan yell and clown scenes, it's a very underrated 007 adventure.

@@markschroeder2578 That's because the two terms ARE interchangeable. And of course there are missiles that carry no warhead. Perhaps those should be called hitiles. In any event I was referring to the rocket and its motor. If you've ever seen such things launched, and I've seen hundreds upon hundreds, you would know that most of the motors burn only briefly.

Pause at 1:40 and 1:43 - - Though it's blurry, you can see the pole used to prop up the Bede jet inside the hangar. The pole was attached to a Jaguar with the roof torn off to complete the illusion.

When the Bede BD-5J 'Acrostar' Jet exits the hanger at high speed and climbing, did you notice in the scene that cuts to Bond looking back over his shoulder, the parked helicopter on his left to which he appears to be "driving" past at a slow speed. No doubt filmed with the aircraft on the ground and under tow.

@@timorvet1 - - Nice spotting there mate. At least they used practical effects instead of CGI though CGI wasn't a thing yet in the early 80s. And Moore himself did that scene instead of a stunt double. This Bede jet scene looked awesome back then.

My dad always said check out Connery and I have. Him and I have even watched some of the older ones. Connery is great. So are the other "newer" ones and Daniel Craig. But Roger Moore is my favorite.
