Great video Jason! You nailed it. Love the quick run through the Spearin Doctrine, and the good summary of the advantages of DB. Glad you took the DBIA course. Did you get certified.

I did. I just did not keep it up to date. I had three of four back then and it was too much.

Jason, could you make a video on cleaning/nothing hits the floor and cable management. Please include pictures or footage of exceptional cable management.
I want to take cleanliness (and thus safety) to the next level but im apprehensive about a potential backlash.

Are you a pre construction manager?

@@axkevin I am not. I was a Super, Field Director, and Project Director.

The application process for the certification seems pretty obnoxious. I am not asking a client to be a reference for a certification.

🤔 my company is design build but build is not involved in the design. Design and estimating seem to exclude build until they submit the proposal. I find scope gaps on every job and RFIs are in the dozens after the first week I get NTP and design can't stand my build team for asking real RFI concerns. My days are numbered here. $120k in missed scope and missed design on my last project😵‍💫

So would you say you're a construction project manager or superintendent, or both? Does this firm have a structural engineer in house? This is the member of the design team that should be working with you most. As a structural engineer, the problems I see is the Architect channeling all communication. While it is great to have one authority being a mouthpiece, the most missed information between design intent and in-field practicality nakedness from construction being the last to know about anything. Having previously worked in real estate development the benifit of having a construction setting in house, was flushing out details after the Design Development sets. Because once the vision is there and we begin making the construction documents to submit to the building department, having the construction mind help design was critical to our plans being not only as easy to build, but thoroughly understood by all parties. It sounds like you're at your firm as an entity not involved in the design, therefore separated from influence on the discussions of how to make the structure without having to essentially submit RFIs like a more typical form would hire a GC for. I obviously don't know your company or situation, but if you don't have input before the building permit is obtained, then you're just an in-house GC for an architect, not a collaborative Design-Build firm. If you can review drawings before they're submitted to the Authority Having Jurisdiction for the permit, then you need to ask to be involved earlier. May not need to be utilized often initially, but if I design a steel moment frame for a particular architectural asthetic in a wood building I'm going to want to talk through connections in that moment of design with the build team. They are critical to design, not an afterthought, after the construction documents are completed. If you're not being heard during design, I would agree, it would be time to lay out how you can smooth the overall build process if more involved during design. Or leave.
