I love watching budget-laptop reviews! Since it has an SSD slot available, I'd like to see how usable it might be in the long run, say, three or five years from now. For instance, I'm still using an AMD-e2 1800 powered Asus that I bought back in 2013. Despite being a budget machine back then, I was able to keep it usable over time and now serves mostly as a tv box and as a guinea-pig PC. Never underestimate low-powered budget laptops. With enough ingenuity and the right optimisations, they can serve for a good while. Ps.: I once dared to benchmark the E2 1800 on cinebench r23 and got 123 pts on multithread, don't remember how "little" it was on single thread mode. I was not amazed for the low score but rather at how much I've done over the years with such an underpowered machine.
I got a Lenovo t430 with an i7 and 1600x900 display on eBay for 100 bucks. Dropped in some ram and a 256gb ssd for 35 bucks. Installed pop os thanks to Emily's great video. I'll take this thing over a chrome book any day.

In Mexico you can find Hyundai laptops as well in Walmart and Bodega Ahurrera (which is owned by Walmart) sold as cheap basic laptops, priced at around 200-250 usd, usually in Bodega Ahurrera it’s where you can find more off brand or cheap brands technology stuff, obviously depending on the quality it can be pretty bad, but you get what you paid for
After seeing that SSD slot, and knowing its got a good keyboard, and know that its got killer battery life, might be enough for me to pick one of these up gfor shits and gigs.
Someone else was pointing out that this exact laptop (at least cosmetically, don't think they took it apart) is available from Multilaser and probably other brands, so you might find it for even less than that with some digging.
It is super easy to hate on that laptop but those are quite popular here. They're called cloudbooks. As you found out the keyboard is impressive for a cheap product and it has outstanding battery life. I bought a similar laptop (physically looks the same although white in colour) for taking notes and using it in the classroom, I was able to get 12h of battery life. I didn't even pack the charger. The fact that it has Windows makes it better than a chromebook as it's compatible with way more software. Even games like GTA, GTA2. It's quite capable. Slow but capable.
Watching this with a Celeron 2957U C720 Chromebook from 2013 at 720p. Use this thing as a daily driver because of the awesome keyboard, touchscreen and battery life. Had to flash MrChromeBox's UEFI firmware, to make the chromebook a laptop with UEFI. Then used a rammus recovery file to install chromeOS. Now we got playstore and updated version of the os to view newer websites. She's a CHAMP! I also installed a 256GB M.2 because it was like $20 lol Thank you for coming to my DREAD talk

I've got a Hyundai SSD as my boot drive. Got it for $16 on black friday a few years back. Was a bit surprised to see it, but it's possibly the only drive in my desktop that has given me zero issues.
I'm a bit confused, Windows in "S mode" is just a setting. Windows 10 S doesn't exist anymore in the latest versions of the OS, and updating Windows 10 S should automatically take you to a state where its just a switch that enables and disables Microsoft Store-only installations (and pretty much nothing else). So not sure what the criticism on this is about.
I dont think ive seen a PWM backlight as bad as that in years! From my experience pwm is fine if the period is short enough and, considering a bargain basement standard mcu, with a pwm output pin can manage a 100us period very easily, (10kHz on/off rate with varying duty) and, even the cheapest of processors have pwm timer output pins capable of orders of magnitude higher switching frequencies doubt this was them cheaping out. To have a pwm screen that flickers that much you'd need a period closer if not exceeding 1ms, where the limits of persistence of vision starts to becomes more apparent. For it to be this bad on a modern device this was likely caused by a hardware oversight that was then bodged with a software hack, like bit-bashing the pwm rather than using a dedicated pwm timer output pin. how a company as big as hyundai would settle for a sub optimal software hack over a new board revision is beyond me, but then again might not be worth the r and d cost in fixing given the products price point.
I was expecting Alex to rate the keyboard a B considering it sounds like "it's really good for a laptop of this price range" and when he went for A- I was blown away because that means it's gotta be better than keyboards from machines that are often $1000+ or even more. Linus being a crabby mang during the speaker test is great ^_^-b Getting non-S Windows is actually easy. Settings -> Update & Security -> Activation, Switch to Windows 10 Home/Pro "Go to Store", Switch out of S Mode -> Get, and you're done. It looks like it's not even a download to do it, just a setting change. When I'm looking for a cheap AF laptop I always have a couple things to look out for. I stay away from Intel N-series chips or the AMD analogue (I forget what it's called) and I want to be able to upgrade RAM and storage. This thing apparently lets you upgrade storage which is not a guarantee at this price point.
This is actually interesting - frequently tech channels focus on the top end devices, and best game play etc, but having reviews that'll help you find the best 'bang for your buck' at a range of price points would be valuable - if only for a email and youtube laptop for your gran.
In our country, we have a laptop called Mecer, also known as RCT, Proline and Connex. Those are basically the exact same as this one, minus the Hyundai name
My current laptop was 160-170 USD. A HP 255 G8 with a Ryzen 5 3500U, 4GB of RAM, and a 256GB NVMe SSD, both of those upgradable (I went for 1TB and 16GB more of RAM). Yes, you can get an used laptop for less than $200 that is way more complete and powerful than a Chromebook, or these kinds of laptops.
I got my dad pretty much this exact laptop, like its 100% the same design, just instead of hyndai its a random-letters chinese brand, the little door has an actual (noname) ssd behind it, 12 gigs of ram (the reason i actually got it, i used to tell my parents to just get whatever is cheapest because they really dont do anything that would require actual hardware but really low ram always made the things freeze up all the time) and i think maybe the processor is slightly faster since it came with vanilla full windows (zero bloatware!) but still some kind of celeron N4xxx variant. Also i think the monitor is better because i couldnt see any flickering, but idk how much the recording highlighted that in this video. Hes pretty happy with it, the keyboard is actually great (although slightly hampered because instead of changing the layout they just ship the US layout with rubber overlays for different layouts, but my dad despite his job literally being "writing long essays" still does "hunt and peck" so it doesnt matter). I would never get him a Chromebook, he kinda barely knows how to use windows after using it for decades, if he was on chrome os i probably would have to do 24/7 tech support without having any experience with it lol.
I think if your hardware lacks performance to the point where you're considering Windows S mode, you really should be using something else entirely. Like Chrome OS or even Android. Or just fully embrace FOSS and put Debian on it or something.
I think this is a white label device -- I have one that looks identical from a brand called "Eevolv", same specs and everything. I got mine for $99! It's slow, but I'm not as worried about dropping it off a ladder, lol -- I use it for things like checking network switches and aligning security cameras. If I drop it, I don't risk losing as much as if I carry a $300+ laptop... It's serviceable. Mine came with 10 Home tho [and I have Pro licenses out the wazoo]
I saw Hyundai's Tech website and noticed a gaming line, though it's only barebone gaming towers with only PSUs and RGB fans on it. If only they made a dedicated pre-built gaming PC line, then name the gaming lineup "N-Line" (as a nod to the high-performance line of cars from Hyundai's Automotive Division). If they improved their quality of Desktops and Laptops (like they do their cars) and give them mid to high tier performance at a competitive price, as an automotive enthusiast I would buy any of their "N-Line" PC in a heartbeat (as to become an owner of a modern gaming PC with automotive-themed branding).
So what you're saying is that this is a pretty functional word processor that has network access, and can maybe cope with playing a little bit of solitaire.
It doesn't look too bad for the price. But personally I would rather buy a refurbished business laptop for the same money. It will be faster and a lot more durable.
well n4020 is a dual core processor. No wonder. But don't just dismiss the whole cheapo windows laptop category, if you get something with say N5000 or N5100 or better, with 8GB of ram it is actually quite usable while keeping the decent battery life AND being completely silent due to passive cooling. On some occasions that's a huge plus. Also with board this small this could be an 7 or 8 inch windows tablet. I do miss those and there's not a single new one on the market, not even from weird brands.
Oh shucks, the Rayman Legends servers were only on for 2 days and now it's off again. I need longer than that. I got merely 1 diamond cup, I still need 950 more points to get the Xbox 360 achievement.
I don't think anybody should buy a laptop like this. Just find another $100 somewhere and get a couple generation old ryzen laptop. These laptops are beyond useless.
4:00 PWM is used on almost every LED screen in existence. the difference is that higher-quality ones flash much faster and the flicker is generally undetectable
That‘s sinply not true. Just look at the tests on notebookcheck. Most Notebooks DON‘T use PWM on their LED backlit panels anymore. OLED panels always use PWM, though, which is why they suck imo.
That pink cheapest laptop from a previous video - got one in front of me, same layout and keyboard, chassis is the same, screen seems to have been updated but no way they didn't all start in the same place... Typed this and got to the trackpad, that's the same too!
I work in a retail in Bulgaria/ Europe. In 2010-2012 we sold Hyundai PCs. I am 10000% sure that they had nothing to do with Hyundai. To this day idk how they managed to use the name and brand. The PCs were your local e-waste Celeron, Atom and some random AMD cpu models.
On the subject of evs, is LMG planning on sending anyone to SEMA? ik its a bit left field but i definitely think you have an audience for it, just as there is for CES
i was waiting that their will be a showcase on post ssd installation comparison briefly but to my despair it wasn't there. For that moment i was excited.
Next: I bought a Samsung Car so you don't have to! Most people don't know but Samsung makes cars in Korea as a partnership w/ Renault-Nissan. But its wild to me that Korea who is known for being crazy enthusiastic about gaming and pioneered e-sports doesn't build any real major gaming laptops or desktops. Neither Samsung nor LG ever any real attempt to capitalize on gaming outside of monitors.
another perspective, my 2011 HP Elitebook 2540p has a core i7 640LM, a 12 year old Low voltage dual core CPU is about twice as fast as the N4020. which came out like 3 years ago.
Anytime anyone mentions that they are wanting to buy a laptop brand new, I always tell them to please stay away from ones with the 'Intel Inside' on it as those are usually Celerons and are generally more trouble than what they are worth. They are also stupidly expensive in general stores that sell electronics in South Africa, where you could potentially pay up to R6000 (thats 300 USD with todays conversion, which is just dumb) You are better off buying a laptop with a 3rd gen i5 at that point, and doing an SSD and RAM upgrade for a little more leg room.
It looks exactly like a Thomson Neo 14"1, even the inside is the same. The position of the LEDs indicators is the same, the only difference I see is the m.2 slot is replace by a SATA on the Thomson
Having a big market of used enterprise ThinkPads, these low budget laptops are usually very hard to justify. Bought an 11" used Thinkpad for the equivalent of ~250 USD, it got a kabylake i5 and an actual SSD, but for way less you can get a Haswell i5 that is still way faster. Remember guys, buy used, a bit of risk for a good product vs no risk for a known bad product.
Okay so, legit moment here - I just opened a Gateway laptop that has the same internals as this Hyundai laptop - model gwtn156-11bk Only difference is that the gateway has a single fan and heatpipes for cooling the CPU.

This would be a great Linux laptop (after adding an SSD that is). A lightweight distro would run great on it and the battery life would be stellar. For travelling this could be all you need for web surfing and the like. I like it. Great job as always Alex (and more Linus Crab Dancing please 😂)
Yeah I was thinking there has to be some intended use case for that laptop It seems like Windows was not the intended use case.
just needs gentoo with dwm
yeah but the screen is dog sh*t. You could get far better laptops for the price
@@mrguest3749 It seems chromebooks of the around the same price and the same size use a 768p display as well.
@@alext3811youd be better off buying an older laptop though.
For 175$ you could get a used Dell Latitude that businesses get rid of as soon as the warranty is over. I still have mine from 2014 and they're excellent.
This must be a joke.
@@Ulexcool No, I still have Dell Latitude e7450 that I got from an office getting rid of them, and they're far superior to the specs on that Hyundai laptop and cost about the same.
Curious minds would like to know how you get such a thing?
There has to be some company in Shenzen that is selling this type of chassis to resellers, this looks almost identical to the PineBook Pro and has a lot of the same pros / cons
Yep landfill crap, should be outlawed...4gb ram in 2023...
Yeah there must be quite popular ODM of those things out there.
When I saw port layout I've recognized that internally it's must be just a mirrored Ezbook 3 Pro that I've bought in 2017 for $200 (actually better -- FHD, metal chassis, 6GB ram, quad core n3450)
@@Djuntasif outlawed then what will they screw poor people over with ?
Tons of people buy the cheapest junk and it's instantly outdated. My stepdad bought some HP laptop in 2015 and it was sooo bad. Not even enough space for Windows update, if I had to guess the main storage was flash memory.
@@Gatorade69 yep all emc storage should be illegal...You know when you see that shit its like the laptop is saying "buy me sucker". I saw some in stores over the years even in my country, and its just...why. Save up and keep it for 5-10 years. My old shitty laptop from 2014, while not good, was at least 8gb drr3, but defiantly should had spend more back then too.
As an American your intentional pronunciation of the “Y” in “Hyundai” is maddening. We just call it “hun day”
Oh come on bro its not the end of the world.😂
In Mexico you can find Hyundai laptops as well in Walmart and Bodega Ahurrera (which is owned by Walmart) sold as cheap basic laptops, priced at around 200-250 usd, usually in Bodega Ahurrera it’s where you can find more off brand or cheap brands technology stuff, obviously depending on the quality it can be pretty bad, but you get what you paid for
After seeing that SSD slot, and knowing its got a good keyboard, and know that its got killer battery life, might be enough for me to pick one of these up gfor shits and gigs.
Slow but capable.
gotta love how linus is just vibing to crab rave in the background at 10:18
Watching this with a Celeron 2957U C720 Chromebook from 2013 at 720p. I also installed a 256GB M.2 because it was like $20 lol
Thank you for coming to my DREAD talk
This doesn't seem that bad, it looks really simlar to an Acer Chromebook. 14" 1366 X 768 is only starting to go away now.
Engineers are the funniest, they are super smart yet lazy, and that combination creates some of the greatest advancements in humanity haha
As a software engineer I love the saying "Take a 2 minute task and make it a 3 month project", perfectly describes what we do
I've got a Hyundai SSD as my boot drive. Got it for $16 on black friday a few years back. Was a bit surprised to see it, but it's possibly the only drive in my desktop that has given me zero issues.
What is the capacity? I'm building a pc and at that price, it's seriously worth considering if it's 512gb and reliable
128. It's just my boot drive, and at the time I was using all HDDs for everything else.@@sierrachief117
Fyi you can change from windows s to windows home for free in seconds.
can you not "upgrade" any Windows S device to full windows for free? That's what the Microsoft support page tells me at least
In Brazil we have a brand that has laptops like this one, it called Positivo.
$163 USD on Amwzon now. It would be good at about half of that.
I was expecting Alex to rate the keyboard a B considering it sounds like "it's really good for a laptop of this price range" and when he went for A- I was blown away because that means it's gotta be better than keyboards from machines that are often $1000+ or even more.
Linus being a crabby mang during the speaker test is great ^_^-b
Getting non-S Windows is actually easy.
This thing apparently lets you upgrade storage which is not a guarantee at this price point.
gold star for background dancers!
"calculating voltages is more difficult" like he's applying Kirchhoff's voltage law or something
This is actually interesting - frequently tech channels focus on the top end devices, and best game play etc, but having reviews that'll help you find the best 'bang for your buck' at a range of price points would be valuable - if only for a email and youtube laptop for your gran.
Your grandmother knows what RUclips is?
In our country, we have a laptop called Mecer, also known as RCT, Proline and Connex. Those are basically the exact same as this one, minus the Hyundai name
Will all short circuit videos have this echo going forwards? 😔
Liked the video when Linus just danced across in the background, made my day, thank you! :)
Those are Chromebook specs. A small Linux distro with some lightweight office apps and a browser would make for a cheap travel laptop.
He sounds more Canadian than usual lol
I wouldn’t trust the security on that laptop. Could easily be hacked with an LTT screwdriver and USB-A cable
And you could set up a spreadsheet of a limited kind. You know, for calculations like 12 x 2.
The CISCO phone ringtone at 1:25 gave me PTSD from setting up VOIP systems at work
“I’m about 4 feet away…”
Alex, HOW LONG ARE YOUR ARMS?!
You know , I was about to comment this but saw you noticed it as well.
Is Alex 8'? Or is his ape index (wingspan) like 8+
Can it be started by turning a usb stick in it?
I don't think anybody should buy a laptop like this. Just find another $100 somewhere and get a couple generation old ryzen laptop. These laptops are beyond useless.
We need a greenscreen cut out version of Linus dancing crab rave
And These Vehicle Computers is Where you could Take Back to Work with all Those Electronic Stores Back to Work Sales Stuff that's on Our Minds Too.
I had a Hyundai 4:3 Monitor from about 2005 to 2015 that served me well as a secondary monitor. They make some okay electronics!
I have a old Hyundai computer (from something like 1995?) and it has their own power supply.
Linus doing the crab made me so happy for some reason 🤣
I actually saw this (or something similar) on campus where i am.... it definitely was something else seeing Hyundai on a laptop
Intel Celeron Processor N4020 - A CPU from 2019
Next: I bought a Samsung Car so you don't have to!
Most people don't know but Samsung makes cars in Korea as a partnership w/ Renault-Nissan. But its wild to me that Korea who is known for being crazy enthusiastic about gaming and pioneered e-sports doesn't build any real major gaming laptops or desktops. Neither Samsung nor LG ever any real attempt to capitalize on gaming outside of monitors.
thats just branding licensee
and they don't even have a branding licensee anymore
RENAULT-SAMSUNG MOTORS -> Renault Korea Motors
another perspective, my 2011 HP Elitebook 2540p has a core i7 640LM, a 12 year old Low voltage dual core CPU is about twice as fast as the N4020. which came out like 3 years ago.
Anytime anyone mentions that they are wanting to buy a laptop brand new, I always tell them to please stay away from ones with the 'Intel Inside' on it as those are usually Celerons and are generally more trouble than what they are worth. They are also stupidly expensive in general stores that sell electronics in South Africa, where you could potentially pay up to R6000 (thats 300 USD with todays conversion, which is just dumb)
You are better off buying a laptop with a 3rd gen i5 at that point, and doing an SSD and RAM upgrade for a little more leg room.
It looks exactly like a Thomson Neo 14"1, even the inside is the same. The position of the LEDs indicators is the same, the only difference I see is the m.2 slot is replace by a SATA on the Thomson
10:15 The moment of Linus colab in the review
Okay, second look once I was able to get a bigger view of the internals - some things were in different spots, but definitely same ODM.
So is this something they made for their service centers or something and decided to sell it too? Since the keyboard was good..
I know you don't know french cars, but now I want a Peugeot review
of their pepper mills that is
a compilation of Alex saying "NOT TOOOOO BAD"
Hyundai is one of many asian companies that makes whatever you can think of. Monitors, watches, TVs, cars, trucks...
I somehow knew about Hyundai by their computer monitors before I saw any of their cars appear in my area.
Love the shot of linus crabraving by in the background😂
Another way to put it in perspective is that the screen resolution on that laptop is comparable to the screen resolution of a Steam Deck.
"I know what 12x2 is, but normally calculating voltages is more difficult" clearly much harder than calculating WATTAGE
I love that the sponsor segue was to better laptops.
I don't think that Hyundai Technology is affiliated with the automaker in any way. Hyundai Technology seems to be a South America-based company, and last time I checked, Hyundai Motor Group was headquartered in South Korea, a country that is not in South America if I am not mistaken.
I'd like yo see you source their other models, specifically if they have more premium models. It'll be interesting to see what Hyundai could do.
Linus crab dancing is better than the laptop.
i could totally see this at a hyundai/kia dealership. them using the laptop to type in loan info or car sales ect.
I Had a Laptop Like This 3 Years Ago In College As a Budget Laptop For Notes In Class, They Literally Have The Same Design, Specs And Everything But Mine Was White
I Guess Hyundai Found The OEM That Makes It
Question, can this also be hijacked with a USB stick and a screwdriver?
To be fair, a lot of companies diversify. Look at Texas Instruments, makers of scientific calculators and missle guidance systems
