Gosh this just made me realize that I really need to step my game up when it comes to productive reading. I really want to read more "smart" books. Tbh the handful of intellectual books that really make you think that I have read were back in high school/college. I like to read but when I was younger I more so read fictional/fantasy books because I wanted to read something that I could escape through. A lot of the books you mentioned are grounded in realism and reading a book that is so close to reality is scary because it forces you to really think about your views on life.
I can really appreciate how you still read the whole book even though its boring. #GOALS ... also I truly enjoy the fact that you do book lists. Thank you for sharing as always, Joulezy!
I'm starting to read and write again thanks to you. I started with reading "between the word and me" and I loved it. I cant wait to read a few that you have mentioned here. Still trying to find my reading taste. I was never an avid reader but I've always enjoyed reading whenever I did read. I want to start reading more, mostly because I want to stop being on the computer so much...
I definitely want to start reading avidly again after watching this. I do research for black feminism so I definitely have to check out pretty much all these books! I will get some of these books after I pay for these textbooks for fall semester of college. College trying to take away my money and soul. Lol
This is so inspiring and thank you for initiating a dialogue for black women to exchange positive books about culture!! Definitely needed this!! Love you always!
Half of a Yellow Sun was amazing!!! So glad you read this also! A book club is definitely part of the definition of smart brown girls!!!! Keep up the good work lady!
This video was so informative. Thanks for putting in the effort that it took to create it. I'm excited to read and review some of the books you mentioned. Meaty and Medical Apartheid are now next in line on my to be read list. I think a webinar on how to build an individual persona as a brand, based on one's passion through social media would be great. I find that you do this so well and feel that many young people (myself included) cab learn a lot from you on this topic.
I would 💜💚❤ for you to do a webinar on your 'career'. How did you get started in community/social involvement? What kind of work/task do you to accomplish goals pertaining to your SmartBrownGirl movement? Also, how do plan/organize/host events? I'm extra inquisitive because I'm heavily considering leaving the corporate world to follow my passion of delving into community endeavors involving the social complexes of my people ✊
Joulezy I love the Smart Brown Girl movement, the videos and maybe even a book club! I think having the right knowledge on certain topics and events is key to being an informed citizen. It is up to us to defend our rights and to support each other, so I am happy that we are all learning and discussing things together! I have a long way to go in terms of learning about different cultural topics but I'm eager to learn :)
I love your affinity/appreciation for African authors, it's helping me with my list of African authors that I should read beyond Chimamanda (not that there is anything wrong with her work). Personally, I have an interest in Indian authors and Indian stories since that's my favorite country. That's what makes reading enjoyable for me, picking my favorite things to learn more about. What makes it not so fun is the fact that I order books every other week or I'm in the library, which leaves me inundated with books.
LOVED THIS VIDEO!! You listed books I've read, books I have and plan to read, and books I've never heard of, a perfect mix! The New Jim Crow has been on my list for so long. It gets off to a tough start but I'm determined. I recently finished Jest Mercy by Bryan Stevenson, he's a lawyer who continues to work towards racial justice in our criminal justice system, it would be a great addition to the list. Just got my copy of Between the World and Me, starting it tonight. So excited for the book club!!
I really enjoy your videos. I always learn something new! I've started to take my writing seriously and now I have a few books to pick up. Thank you!!!!
I am here for a week of smart brown girl/and or pop snark videos! Black feminism and a self esteem are the first topics that come to mind. With regards to self esteem, a more in depth conversation about how black women can maintain both inner and outer confidence through the heightening of social consciousness.
Thanks @Jouelzy. The Harriet Washington book "Medical Apartheid" is phenomenal. I plan to read some of the others as well..."God Help the Child" irritated me. Bad Feminist is EVERYTHING! Be well, keep us posted on the book club.
yeeeeesss definitely a full week of SmartBrownGirl videos would be amazing. I think webinars would be incredible because you're so informative. for instance you're so equipped on history. for some women who are interested in learning more about the African-American culture and literature where do we begin?
I'm so excited. I already read "Between the World and Me". I just finished it yesterday. It was painful yet enlightening. I'm so ready for this book club. I need to finish "Nobody Knows My Know".
Great video! I'm actually looking around for some books for my little sister's birthday. She's coming of age black girl, freshman year in high school and I really want to give her gifts I never got (or even asked for) when I was her age. Books & Knowledge!
Fabulous video. You mentioned so many that I have read and even more that I want to read. I'm in search for James Baldwin. Sort of a self-guided study of who he was. I've read his essays in undergrad but I want to know more. I loved Americana and I have Half a Yellow Sun on my to read stack. And I'm so happy that Between the World and Me will be the first book club read. I thoroughly enjoyed that book. I need to purchase it for my personal collection.
Yes girl build my mind, vocabulary, and imagination with your book club I'm not big on reading alot but this will be a start one book at time. Smart Brown Girl week yeeees.
I read often, but mostly free books lately and I've found a few gems lol. The struggle when buying a house. This is awesome though I'm going to check a few out. Tfs!!I would love to hear your thoughts on branding and self publishing a book. I know you have undergone a whole rebranding and wrote a book so I'm eager to hear what you learned from it and what to avoid. Your nephew is gorgeous!!
oh man this is great. thx for breaking it down in reader categories. i love resding but feel like i never have time to finish books all the way thru. i fo look forward to reading michelle Alexander, charles m blow, and cornell west and many more. i have to get back to my reading for sure. love the vids j
A week worth of #smartbrowngirl would be amazing! As for topics for a webinar series one should be on how to effectively network. Also, thank you so much for this videos they are real eye openers.
How long does it take you to read these books? I'm trying to wing myself from internet surfing and social media and put that time into reading. You can add in your webinar how to get more of us Black men into recreational reading and the impact it has had in your life.
I have heard great things about Half of The Yellow Sun....Yay for book clubs. Have you read Boy, Snow, Bird by Helen Oyeyemi. This one caught me by surprise and was marvelous!
Also order Meaty! Thank you for suggesting a lighthearted book. Could you suggest any other books that you believe are kind of similar? Going to a PWI they didn't have it in stock -_- but you know...lol okay. Hope to hear from you soon!
Jouelzy! I felt the SAME WAY about Ghana Must Go... Lawd, I have been trying to tell people about how the novel flopped for me... But you may like her short story which is so different from the writing style of her novel: "The Sex Lives of African Girls" Good list!
Jouelzy, You're awesome. I'm so excited to purchase these books through your site. I want to read more. You're well read and well versed on er'thang. "Get smart." #SMARTBROWNGIRL
Check out "Radiance of Tomorrow" by Ishmael Beah! Based in Sierra Leone - with the gentle lyricism of a dream and the moral clarity of a fable, Radiance of Tomorrow is a powerful novel about preserving what means the most to us, even in uncertain times.
Only 14 comments so far, lol maybe Jouelzy will finally see one of my comments! Not but really, this has inspired me to pick up reading often again. And yes a week of #smartbrowngirl videos would be awesome! Also in the maybe bookclub would we ever read anything by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, i can talk about him all day! As for a lesson, i think i would like to hear you talk about colonization in parts of West Africa and how it affects their present day culture, since this is seems to be a topic you enjoy lol! But also i'm no too familiar with work by West African authors, the Congo (pre-DRC, aka colonization era) on the other hand, i've read a bunch of stuff about that
You should read Stacey Ann Chin's memoir, The Other Side of Paradise, The Starside of Bird Hill, The Turner House, Krik Krak and if you're into ya This Side of Home.
I LIKE YOUR CHOICE OF BOOKS. Thank you for sharing. You might want to try, The Interpreter" by Wole Soyinka. Also try James Baldwin's "Go Tell It on The Mountain" or "Giovanni's Room".
Thanks Jouelzy for the video and the recommendations. I have some reading to do. I just wanted to say that I appreciate what you do and voicing your opinions and being unapologetically yourself. You inspire me to be the best smart brown girl I can be and not to dull my shine for anyone. That can be apart of your webinar a motivational workshop on being your best when you are minority and up against obstacles of all kinds. Other topics could self esteem, making ideas turn into action, activism, working for yourself, being comfortable single etc. keep up the great work :0) P.S. What do you think of the book 12 years a slave ? That's what I'm currently reading
I did listen to "God Bless the child" on audible... I definitely agree with your review but that's grandma so I'm gonna eat anyway. She read her book for audible and I literally love her voice. It's very smoothing and rhythmic. Have u tried Audible app?
Jouelzy!!! I read your book! Loved it to pieces. Couldn't put it down. I want to do a book also a collection of short stories that I've written over the years. I'm not sure how to go about getting published and everything. I would love your help if you can or just advice Author to Author. I would really appreciate it
Thank you for this! I moved to houston and havent had anyone to talk to about these kinds of things! I miss these conversations and have yet to find a book club where this awkward smart brown girl can really talk. Any suggestions in north Houston? ?
Love this list. Im really tryna figure out if I wanna bug my library to carry these books (cause you know all libraries dont) so i can check them out or if I wanna skip all that and just buy. Decisions, decisions.

The New Jim Crow gets a bit redundant but it's a good read.I had to read it for my sociology of race and ethnicity class a few semesters ago and it was very informative.
Hi, Jouelzy my sister just moved to Texas and having a hard time transitioning into the social scene. She is in her early 30's and is a social butterfly anything you recommend would be helpful.
I am reading your book and am enjoying it. I would be interested in supporting a smart brown girl kids book club or reading list. Your love for books has sparked my interest for reading and I would like to pass it on to me three girls (15, 10, and 5).
Hello I am a new author of a book named Trunked. I would love for you to review it. I really need to know how to get the information to you? thanks you
Your mini review of Toni Morrison's book God Help the Child was too funny when you said "'reading this book is like....You love your grand mom but every dish she cooks ain't the shit" ...haha...too funny...I know exactly what you mean. This puts it into perspective how many books I have/read that aren't productive in my cultural growth. Jesus, take my money Amazon.
***** Hmm, I don't think we have dollar general here. Thank you for the suggestion though 😊.
We appreciate this so much Jouelzy!!! As black women it's so important for us to stay knowledgeable.
Medical Apartheid was probably the most important book I read this year. Thanks for discussing it.
ABSOLUTELY a week of Smart Brown Girl videos!
I can really appreciate how you still read the whole book even though its boring. #GOALS ... also I truly enjoy the fact that you do book lists. Thank you for sharing as always, Joulezy!

Looooove the book reviews. I assume you are a very busy woman. So when do you have time to read??? I need to kill my cable bill
do you have any tips for being a avid reader, like you did for starting a journal. As a college student it will really be helpful:)!!!!
I did listen to "God Bless the child" on audible... I definitely agree with your review but that's grandma so I'm gonna eat anyway. She read her book for audible and I literally love her voice. It's very smoothing and rhythmic. Have u tried Audible app?
John Steinbeck wrote The Grapes of Wrath

I grew up in London so black history Is a little vague unless you research the topic yourself. Going on a tangent, the mistake I made in university is focussing on my degree and not expanding my knowledge generally. You seem very aware and conscious what advice can you dish out with regard to me developing that area? Book recommendations will be appreciated also c
The New Jim Crow gets a bit redundant but it's a good read.I had to read it for my sociology of race and ethnicity class a few semesters ago and it was very informative.
Hi, Jouelzy my sister just moved to Texas and having a hard time transitioning into the social scene. She is in her early 30's and is a social butterfly anything you recommend would be helpful.
are you doing a 2016 book list?
I am reading your book and am enjoying it. I would be interested in supporting a smart brown girl kids book club or reading list. Your love for books has sparked my interest for reading and I would like to pass it on to me three girls (15, 10, and 5).
I just ordered a book from you!
Please do a week of Smart Brown Girl Videos!! But I don't want it to interfere with family time with your sis and nephew

Toni can come deep on ya. I still need to read God Help the Child. I hope I get around to it soon.
Would really appreciate webinar on breaking into web development.
Does your friend from philadelphia teach at Temple University?
Got the same feeling from Ghana Must Go. I've been trying to finish it all year. The style is just too too distracting. If you haven't already, pick up I Do Not Come To You By Chance by Tricia Adaobi. Nigerian author. It's hilarious!
Woop woop for my countryman Ngugi wa Thiong'o!
Okay Jouelzy. Any suggestions for writers who are trying to sell books to you and your fan base? I've written a book called "Remember the Rainbow: An instinctive Sense For Grasping the Nature of Things." The book is a memoir of my life and how I came to discovered I been time traveling. I have only had one review which didn't speak highly of my book. I just want to know how best to reach the readers in great numbers. I mean what causes some books to do so well while other takes years before they take off in high sales. Anyhow, I also was wondering do you read e-books?
