This is a very young juvenile rat, just weaned and learning the cruelty of the outside world. Already injured, and can't put up much of a fight. Sadly, I don't think the rat will live very long after this. The lives of wild animals is so harsh, should make one appreciate the luxuries we have.

Something is wrong with the rat... it doesn’t look healthy and keeps stoning... it could have easily ran away or defended itself, but it looks like it’s waiting to die instead.
I watched something similar a couple of years ago: two (North American) crows were tag teaming a rat in the middle of a residental street.I thought that maybe there was something wrong with the rat (poisoned?) because they usually don't come out in the middle of the day. The crows kept pulling the rat's tale and pecking at it's head almost like they were trying to get to it's juicy rat brain. I watched it for quite a while because I had never seen or heard of such a thing happening before. Eventually it seemed as if the rat was either dead or at least near death and the crows were jumping around pecking at it still (at one point it looked like they were playing tug-of-war with it). FYI I heard no squeaking and in fact it was eerily quiet.
I don't get why this rat didn't take off running. Rats are fast. He could outrun that bird and duck into a small space for cover. But instead he just kind of froze, maybe out of fear?
If you look closely, you see the rat has an injured leg on the left. And it seems like the pecking is focused on the already injured leg and the eyes of the rat! I honestly dont think this was because the rat was considered prey... Could this be some sort of territorial fight or fighting over food? Pretty common to see rats out in the day time. I often see them in hedgerows and running across country roads here in the Uk

I think this has been going on for a while, that mouse/rat looks wore out.

If you look closely, you see the rat has an injured leg on the left. And it seems like the pecking is focused on the already injured leg and the eyes of the rat! I honestly dont think this was because the rat was considered prey... Could this be some sort of territorial fight or fighting over food? To me it looks like the birb goes off like "aight, imma fuck dis bich up!"

And it’s sad because it’s a young rat and it’s eyes were pecked out which is also why it couldn’t fight back properly. Rats are normally tough af even against birds.

@hijnow it's winter here so I keep the coop closed. The problem starts at spring again.. Also my chickens loves to give birth outside the coop and magpies watching and spot the locations inside the bushes.. 😏
