As soon as he said he was doing custom cables I was like "That's gonna be a lot more work than he probably thinks it is."
When you can get half-foot cables for less than $1 from monoprice, you should probably not be dinking around with making your own cables. You can easily spend 15 - 30 minutes per cable, especially if you're rusty.

That one cable was probably included with one of the gazillion networking equipment that he purchased so he didn't really make it...
I was going to say, if he went through the task of rewiring so many ethernet cables, kudos. I've done one as an entry level tech and that took nearly an hour because of the cables not cooperating. While having help from a supervisor who has done hundreds before!
I did all custom cables once, even the power cord. Very much regretted it when I upgrade/ move places

I want to know why they couldn't use different colours. Looking for a stripe the size of a human hair can be tricky at times.
I have made way too many custom Ethernet cables in my day. Once you get good at it, it's maybe 5 minutes a cable.
Just repeat after me kids: "orange-stripe, orange, green-stripe, blue, blue-stripe, green, brown-stripe, brown" and your done. There's your standard 568b plug for a straight cable.

Or just use a 1U PDU for about $110. At my last job we retired a bunch when we closed down some offices so I picked up a few. Once I finish my remodel I've got a small wall mount rack I'm going to install for a 1U patch panel, the PDU and a shelf. I'm not sure if I'll buy a rack mount UPS or just get a standing one since it'll sit on a shelf in a closet.

Home server rooms are actually pretty common, and not that expensive to build

I have a 32tb storage rack just for games and stuff alone.
It is truly a comfort to know that all of us with home server racks employ essentially the same techniques that should never see the light of production environments...or day...tennis balls, unnecessarily long eithernet cables, our rigs come first (at the expense of significant other's), shared circuitry, old dead projects, hot glue, and ESPECIALLY the dead bees. Where do they come from!?

@@TheFishyOne yep, I've got DDR4 from back when it first came out at the consumer level, for my X99 5930k so literally a six year old system, in terms of tech that is pretty old, so you aren't wrong, if Linus is running some of the original DDR4 memory that is by no means a new tech, then again my wife's computer is closer to 10 years or more...my whole household might be over due for handme downs and upgrades.
