There are a lot of strategies to make tongue-wetting profit that the average joes don't know. . Personally, the financial-market for me seems the only way forward with my long time horizon (accrued roughly $457k in gains since Mid 2021 ) but if you don’t have that fortune of time it’s a tough market out there almost nowhere feels safe!

Devin, thanks for always giving us helpful information to navigate Social Security and get our best benefits. I just got off the phone, after waiting 2 hours on hold I might add, to make an appointment to apply for widow's benefits on my husband's earnings. The representative tried to convince me that I will have to choose between my earnings or my husband's because I am 66. I told her 3 times- no, I'm not applying for spousal benefits or my own. I want widow's benefits, Form SSA-10. She finally put me on hold and went and asked somebody. She said I am right. After age 66, it doesn't matter how much I earn. I can file for widow's benefits. And then at age 70, I will file for my own. It pays to educate yourself by listening to people like you!

Now years later they are both past FRA and If he then passes away first, my understanding is she will receive his full benefit as long as it is greater than her own benefit. Is this correct?

A married couple are both receiving social security retirement benefits and one of them dies. Is the survivor entitled to receive any of the benefits the deceased spouse received?
If social security did not exist, they could have put the money away for themselves, but the government took it from them. If they had not been forced to give it to social security, the couple would have it available to them, and if one dies, the survivor would have it all.

What is the difference between survivor benefirs❤ an widows benefit?

  • @user-bclark74

I just lost my wife (63) this year. She filed for ss early at age 62 and was receiving benefits for about a year. I am 68 , retired and recieve a state pension of roughly 50k a year and never worked enough quarters in other jobs to receive any ss benefits. I filed via telephone interview for spousal benefits. I was told that I would only receive a death benefit of $225 and was not eligible to receive anything else. So i'm trying to find out is this accurate and what would be the reason for not being able to receive any of my wife's benefits....we were married for 42 years and no children or former marriages. Any help here appreciated.

I collected both my SSDI was figured on my own earnings. After I was awarded my SSDI , the gave me a per cent age of my deceased ex spouse benefits. When I turned 65 last November. At that time, I had to relinquish MY SSDI but switch to full spousal benefits which was about 500.00 more

My husband was supporting his stepdaughter (my daughter) for the past few years and paying for her child support the last 7 years alongside of our the deceased biological 3 year old son. Do you think 🤔 my daughter can still get benefits. I'm applying for her as well.

This is an older video but…here is one on survivor benefits. I was married for ten years so it’s not me. I am watching a few people who are 2nd marriages. Like long term, maybe even 20 years. They know the 1st is dying. They file for divorce on #2 so they can qualify for SS based on #1 survivor benefit rate. I don’t ask if f their plan worked so will ask you. Does it work? Oh and 2 told me they plan to remarry #2 after they go thru the process.

Devon, in you linked article you mentioned bank account protection. I have a friend over 65 living entirely on her SSDI payment. She had been previously advised to transfer some of this income into other (same bank) accounts she and her husband had at the time of his death. So she does this in small amounts monthly. Are these other accounts protected too since all the deposit into the main account appears to be protected? Or does this practice need to stop? Thanks.

Thank you very much for this info. I became a widow at 58, my husband was 68 when he died. He collected SS at 62 and I put it all in the bank because he collected a pension. I work full time for health benefits so I put off collecting my widows benefits until I reach my FRA which is 66 1/2 so I can still work full time up to the SS limit. When I do collect my SS I will collect on the survivors benefits only because my husband was getting way more than I would on SS. His 80% because of early collecting is still more than mine would be at 100%. Please tell me if I am correct or not, and feel free to correct me. Thank you. :)

My ex remarried after 20 years of marriage. I was collecting SSI and was contacted by Social Security & they said I had no choice but to start collecting for his retirement. This confuses me because he's still working. I'm 66 and disabled...Can anyone make sense of this?

  • @chelletaylor6763
    @chelletaylor6763 3 года назад

what about if your ex was disabled but paid in maximum life premiums before becoming disabled? I am 53, disabled since I was 21 but because I didn't file until after I was 22... missed the disabled child benefit being based on my parents. I got married after I became disabled but did not file until after I was married. I became disabled at 21 in 1989. I got married in1991. I filed for disability in 1993. I was in a wreck and did not receive my mmi report until 1995, at which time I was approved for SSD based on what I had paid in... because if my age at the time I filed, but they always told me I wouldn't get it til my mmi report was complete. SO UNFAIR. I left my husband years ago but we never divorced. We had been together and apart throughout our marriage. The last time we split was 2008... so 17 years on and off but still married for 30 years. He worked overtime his whole life (made a lot of $$$) but became blind in his 50's and has now passed away from diabetes. I currently get 700/m SSD and 100/SSI. How does it work that he became disabled before any retirement age but payed in well over the required 10 years and over the max cap; when I, as well, have been disabled basically my whole adult life. I did pay in 6 of the 10 years myself as I went to work at age 15 and I have paid in some since... trying to work over and over again. I have head injury. I also have a genius IQ. I wake up retartded and go to bed Einstein, so I tried working at night BUT, then there is the barometric pressure changes from weather that instantly retards my brain again.

My husband went on social security disability in his 50’s and when he reached full retirement age they switched it to social security. I always worked full time. Two weeks ago my husband passed away and I had lost my job prior to his passing and collecting unemployment. I am not at full retirement age and don’t want to collect on mine yet. Can I still continue to receive my husband social security check as a survivor benefit? Unfortunately they stop his payment and I have to wait 6 weeks for appointment with social security and the only income I now have is unemployment that will run out in May. My income is much higher than my husband but I would lose anywhere from $200 a month if I collected on my social security before I am 66.4 and it would be $1000 more if I waited to 70. My goal was to retire at 70. What are my options, I want to be prepared before my appointment with social security so I understand my entitlement?

No, I don't believe that SS is going to give you your husband's disability/SS ck. No one get 2 ck's like that from SS. The thing to investigate is, if his SS ck. might have been larger than what you might get from taking your SS early. It sounds like it might not have been though since you indicate that your income was always higher. This is what to find out from SS.

@@dresser6135 I am not looking to take my SS because I am not at full age retirement. I would lose 200 a month if I collected on mine now. I just want to maintain just my husband as the survivor benefits because I work full time.

I'm understanding the reduced benefit set at 82.5% of FRA when your late spouse began benefits at 62 - and the surviving spouse claim is at it's maximum at roughly 62.5, depending on birth year, when your reduction is 17.5%.
I'm understanding the 100% of FRA when those benefits began at or after FRA. This is when the surviving spouse claims at their FRA.
    What about the missing middle?
My late spouse claimed about 9 months prior to FRA. Roughly 6% reduction. Am I right in presuming that when my reduction is that 6%, my survivor's benefit is at it's max? Somewhere between 62.5 ish and FRA, matching the actual reduction that the late spouse received?

I don’t understand why the onus is on us to learn all the thousands of SSA rules. The SSA needs to do their jobs or have excellent software that can run scenarios for people. The SSA should be sued and held accountable for the millions of dollars in deserved benefits they have cost people due to their ignorance, silence, incompetence, or outright planned fraudulent actions.
