This is very similar to an African story called "Anansi, the African Spider Man" where Anansi tries to capture a fairy by making a gum baby and setting it on the road with yams in front of it and the fairy asks the gum baby for some yams and she eats them and thanks the gum baby, but it says nothing and she asks why it didn't say anything and threatens to hit it if it didn't answer and she hits it, but her hand sticks to it and she hits it with her other hand and it gets stuck too and she pushes against the gum baby with her feet, but they get stuck too and Anansi succeeds in capturing the fairy.
This is awesome. Thank you. I was describing this to my kiddos and started singing "Zipidee Do Da" afterwards. My son asked why I was singing, and I said that I remembered it always coming at the end of the story. I haven't heard this thing in more than 30 years, and it's just as I remember it, including the scratched record.
Some quotes form reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad brought me here! I remembered “tar baby” from elementary school but I didn’t pay attention or get the lesson. I’m 20 years old & I’ve learned the lesson(s) in this children’s book today
I was 8 years old living at a children's home in 1984. Someone dropped off old toys that needed a new home. All I wanted was the record player and THESE books!! Some of my best days has a child was spent day dreaming in front of a hollie hobby record player!!
God Bless you... and these are great... my uncle got me all the Disney read alongs and when you turned over the cassettes you get to play the main character. I love them all. They still have them to this day.
My grandparents have this tape at their house. I used to listen to it every time we visited and I would sing zippity doo da with my grandpa. Good times :)
Omg had this and loved playing it on my Fisher Price cassette player totally loved this story. It's the giggles that brings back memories KIDS TODAY WILL NEVER KNOW ❤
When I was little, this story scared me. I was only scared because of the part where the rabbit gets stuck in the tar to where he can’t move and can barely open his eyes. It was even worse that I didn’t finish the story because I was too scared, so I assumed he died.
I hear there is a group of people going to stand in front of Splash Mountain at Disneyland on the day it reopens as the Princess and the Frog ride to sing Zip-a -dee-do-da in protest of the change.
Awesome video! Thanks for the upload! Song of the South was the first movie that I ever saw in a theatre and I also had this same book as a child. Brings back the memories.
I have the original first edition storybook by the original writer. It's AMAZING and they were stories from a slave and they were remembered and put into books. The story behind the books are AMAZING!! I absolutely LOVE all these beautiful stories ♡♡
I loved this book when I was a kid listening to it on my great grandmothers "hi-fi"! Didn't realize how physical it was back then though! Brer rabbit smacked the s#%t out of the tar baby and bear wanting to put a mugging on rabbit! Lol!
I have this on cassette which I got it at a yard sale along with other cassettes on some VHS tapes. I still need to find this on vinyl with the book. Thank's for uploading this I will post this soon when I find the book and record.
Also the theme is, leave people the hell alone if they choose not to not acknowledge you :P 'Cause it has nothing to do with being eaten - nobody is gonna dress up an animal in tar before cooking it as it would be inedible anyway lol :P
I'd almost completely forgotten how many of these books I saw, heard and read till I heard the chimes ring like this. Trippy. The book does not do justice to how scary Brer Bear is in the cartoon, though!
I have this same book and record. Thanks for recording it. I saw the story through a child's eyes. Didn't know nothing about race. I miss those days when I didn't.
OMG, I had this too!! I immediately had to search through and find Brer Bear saying "Let's just smack him in the head!" which became an in joke with me for a while.
I remember having this "Golden Book" when I was 6 or 7. Being born in '52, that would have meant that book was made sometime in the '50's. It's an old story.
+reddiamondxiv lol, awww geez, I had forgotten about that! You know, on the one hand, I really miss the creative freedom the arts had back in the day, on the other hand, nothing too good usually comes from 'baby face punching.' I guess it was ok, though - this story was intended for an audience of very small children, and they're typically not very impressionable...
I used to listen to this growing up. The Amos n Andy style of line delivery boggles my mind as I'm listening to it now. Until the age of ten, I thought all black people talked like the Kingfish.
This is NOT racist. If you have a problem with it then perhaps YOU are racist. This is a classic. Song of the South was awesome. I wish I had a grandfather as nice as that Uncle Remus!
Agreed. I just don’t know how people can find racism in this. If anything, this story taught me some wonderful lessons as a kid, such as not letting your anger get the best of you, and that no matter how desperate things may seem, you often can still find a way out if you use your head and look for opportunities.
Well, the design of the cover at least dates back to 1971. This particular cover, with the record peaking out from behind the book, was released in 1977.
heheheh looks like brer rabbit got in a fit with a grimer heheheh I love this record a lot I got a copy of it myself much scratchier though just love hearing it scratchy
I was born in the early sixty I watched the whole movie on tv until it was banded, thanks to the NAACP that said it was racist it showed slavery. This was one of the best movie Disney ever produce. 🐸🐰🐝🇺🇸
It's actually born and BRED in the briar patch. But yeah, I was raised on this version, too. I guess it wasn't cool to mention breeding around kids by then. "Bred" has a better lyrical beat to it, I find. Check out the cartoon if you haven't yet, and judge for yourself.
Yeah, there are quite a few differences in the wording between the original cartoon and the later books. I can't understand the reasoning behind most of them. In the cartoon, Brer Fox and Bear also talk about hanging, skinning and beheading Brer Rabbit in some detail. I get how that may have been "unsuitable" for children.
+Michael Solano Looking at the list at the end, I also know for sure I had Peter and the Wolf and Pete's Dragon...who knows how many others. Great memories! Ah to be 4 years old again!!
This was awesome! I had this when I was a kid and I felt like a kid again sitting here listening to it. Thanks for the trip back in time!
My daddy told me Brer Rabbit stories every damn night as a kid. I absolutely LOVED IT. I'm grown now, and I miss those moments.
I imagine a LOT of kids listened to Disney's read-along records on Fisher Price record players!
nothing beats it i had the micky mouse doll this was back when imagination wasnt just a thing of the past
Some quotes form reading Rich Dad, Poor Dad brought me here! I remembered “tar baby” from elementary school but I didn’t pay attention or get the lesson. I’m 20 years old & I’ve learned the lesson(s) in this children’s book today
Alyssa’s Advice same reason I’m here lol
I had this as a child and LOVED it. Thank you for sharing!
The girls hv this movie. Air live it
So did I! I can’t believe this video exists.
@Ryder Balay Google the definition of the term, it's a metaphor for a sticky situation that's hard to get out of.
I used to listen to the story when I was a kid too and I loved it
I did too! 😢

Joyel, I hope life has treated you kindly and you've had many wishes come true 💜
The stories are much older than the Disney movie.
Well, no kidding!
Dang! This really brings me back. I had this book and tape and I'd listen to it all the time with my brother when I was a kid
I had this story too, Br'er Rabbit is an underrated Disney character and Splash Mountain is the best Disneyland ride :)
My grandparents have this tape at their house. I used to listen to it every time we visited and I would sing zippity doo da with my grandpa. Good times :)
The skip in the record is hilarious!
Love it !!
OMG! I remember this! I LOVED IT! I had the flip open player with the orange turntable!!!
ME TOO!!!!! this is awesome, great work!
I read this ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!! I recently saw something about Brer Rabbit and instantly thought of this. My fiancée has never heard of this book.
My pops used to read me this story before I went to bed.
Said Br'er Fox, said Br'er Fox, said Br'er Fox, said Br'er Fox...
Said Br'er Fox, Said Br'er Fox, Said Br'er fox.
what did the fox say?
*"Said Brer Fox" intensifies*
STOP REPEATING!!!
Takes me back. Loved it.
Omg had this and loved playing it on my Fisher Price cassette player totally loved this story. It's the giggles that brings back memories KIDS TODAY WILL NEVER KNOW ❤
*S A I D B R E R F O X*
I think brear rabbit is pretty cute for kids of all ages
Loved Brer Rabbit , we read them at school 👍🏻

Brings back great childhood memories. My favorite childhood story!
I hear there is a group of people going to stand in front of Splash Mountain at Disneyland on the day it reopens as the Princess and the Frog ride to sing Zip-a -dee-do-da in protest of the change.
Brer Bear reminds me of Baloo from Jungle book.
"You're right!" Said Brer Fox
*Said Brer Fox
*Said Brer Fox
That's what the Fox says!
Said Brer Fox, Said Brer Fox, Said Brer Fox.
These were cool, I had this story and record, it was one of my favorites!
don't smack random babies you find in the forest kids!
Awesome video! Thanks for the upload! Song of the South was the first movie that I ever saw in a theatre and I also had this same book as a child. Brings back the memories.

This brings me back to my childhood. I had this record and book to follow as a child...thank you!
I have the original first edition storybook by the original writer. It's AMAZING and they were stories from a slave and they were remembered and put into books. The story behind the books are AMAZING!! I absolutely LOVE all these beautiful stories ♡♡
I just took a step back to my childhood! Thanks for sharing.
I loved this book when I was a kid listening to it on my great grandmothers "hi-fi"! Didn't realize how physical it was back then though! Brer rabbit smacked the s#%t out of the tar baby and bear wanting to put a mugging on rabbit! Lol!

I used to have this. I remember listening to this with my Dad. Thank you so much for the memories.
Also the theme is, leave people the hell alone if they choose not to not acknowledge you :P 'Cause it has nothing to do with being eaten - nobody is gonna dress up an animal in tar before cooking it as it would be inedible anyway lol :P

OMG! I remember having this exact same book as a little boy! Thanks for uploading!
Golly, why don't they release this on DVD? As if I didn't know!
Loved this as a kid. Thanks for uploading! :)
I'd almost completely forgotten how many of these books I saw, heard and read till I heard the chimes ring like this. Trippy. The book does not do justice to how scary Brer Bear is in the cartoon, though!

megan white Me too! We've got an entire bag filled with cassette tapes and the books that go along with em.
I still have my records ♥️
I had this in the early 80s
Thanks for uploading I love it :)
I remember having this "Golden Book" when I was 6 or 7. Being born in '52, that would have meant that book was made sometime in the '50's. It's an old story.
I remember watching this movie! Memories 😂
After the first "said Brer Fox", skip to 2:40!
I memember this story from when I was a kid. I learnded how to lie and use reverse sycology.
And punch a baby in the face? lol
+reddiamondxiv lol, awww geez, I had forgotten about that! So the HERO of the story punches someone else due to bad manners?
Not something you see anymore.
Yes, and look at the state of us 😔
@@stalstonestacy4316 the comment was from 9 years ago lol

My god this brings back memories. Thanks for the upload
This is why you got to love records they skip instead of glitch like CDs do.
I had the story book with the record...Great memories
The narrator sounds like the voice of the animatronic miner at Shell gas station in Cima, CA

critterfreek82 .....you do Black people were called Tar Babies as an insult right.....And Uncle Rumas was an slave..
@@dantemiller7193 The story is older than the insult, ya Dingus.
Orange turntable ftw
I remember that old chime sound used to indicate the page-turning! I used to have a lot of read-along storybooks-on-tapes like these!
Kinda funny. Disney did a movie about a folk tale character that was the inspiration for their cartoon competitor's star character Bugs Bunny.
this brings back memories :-)
Well, the design of the cover at least dates back to 1971. This particular cover, with the record peaking out from behind the book, was released in 1977.
heheheh looks like brer rabbit got in a fit with a grimer heheheh I love this record a lot I got a copy of it myself much scratchier though just love hearing it scratchy
I used to have this storybook and the record (put on tape)!
I will miss this being on splash mountains theme
I had this too. Thanks for sharing.
So what if there was no Song of the South? There’d be no Brer Rabbit, no Splash Mountain, and no Zip-a-Dee-Do-Dah!
this book scared the shit out of me as a child
I’m going to see if I can buy this on ebay
I do have Robin Hood. No Haunted Mansion. Perhaps I will put it on here when I have time.
Beginning at 2:34 'said brer fox' repeated 4 times. I like to repeat it many times like I'm creating a new beat
That's what the Fox says
The book Rich Dad Poor Dad brought me here :)
OMG I had tgis exact same record when I was a kid!
@DELIVEREE I believe the narrator was Uncle Remus(James Baskett)
I was born in the early sixty I watched the whole movie on tv until it was banded, thanks to the NAACP that said it was racist it showed slavery. This was one of the best movie Disney ever produce. 🐸🐰🐝🇺🇸
Narrated by Bob Holt
Such a big guy in the 70's as he was all over then!
Is it so shameful of me to admit I knew about this tale when I was on my late 20's and I read about it in "Rich Dad, Poor Dad" ?
I had this!!!!! But I think mom took it away a long time ago, good memories!
It's actually born and BRED in the briar patch. But yeah, I was raised on this version, too. I guess it wasn't cool to mention breeding around kids by then. "Bred" has a better lyrical beat to it, I find. Check out the cartoon if you haven't yet, and judge for yourself.

It Wouldn't Fool Anybody It Hasn't Got Any Hair
I remember this!!
Very well done. What software did you use to combine the audio and video and the page turning effect.
This gives me splash mountain vibes
I had the one for the Haunted Mansion... it was awesome.
I thought the song was about giving a mouthful to girlfriends
Song Of The South
Brer Rabbit sounds like spongebob
