Le Mans is a kind of hidden gem. The majority of tourists don’t visit this city which is one of its greatest attractions if like me you don’t like places that have the feeling they are contrived just for visitors. You are absolutely 100% right about “modern” architecture, a complete disaster that has trashed so many places. The greatest con trick in the history of civilisation yet the misinformed ‘ still fall for it.
Speaking of cities/towns just for tourists, we've visited Giverny for one of our episodes this year and even though it is beautiful, you cannot help but feel overwhelmed by all the tourists. We would like to possibly go back and explore Le Mans again along with its surrounding areas. Maybe something for 2023...
I once visited Colmar, and it was full of Korean and Japanese visitors. So it feels less authentic, although it's also a normal city where people live. It feels like an Instagram hotspot. Le Mans is my home place . It's always been underrated, even with French people, it suits me that way. The medieval part of town is used for shooting period films or series. As for the red pagan standing stone / menhir, women have been rubbing it for centuries, for fertility.
Gorgeous. Have you been to Lucca? Massive thick walls. These towns were built before the all mighty car which is part of the problem of modern cities .... all to facilitate cars cars cars. And yes we have one that we bought when we moved from downtown Toronto to Stratford in late 2019. Stunning old buildings and narrow streets - love it!
We think that cars are not bad and are needed for commerce and people, but they should be accommodated correctly, which is not always possible. Some cities in Europe manage to redirect the traffic either around the historic centre villes, others even send them underground. It could be balanced out, only if the budget and proper redevelopment are in place. And of course, some cities just cannot have huge redevelopments at all. Rome is an excellent example. Paris is super complicated as well.

PS. we haven't been to Lucca yet.
I did not realise that Le Mans was such a lovely old town!
We were pleasantly surprised ourselves!
The girls and boys were doing their First holy communion not graduating
Oh that’s interesting. Neither of us are Catholic, so it’s new to us. Thank you for the information.
