The number 1 reason why I put games in my backlog is that I find them interesting and want to play them someday.
Btw, you can speak with the other party members in DQ 11 and they will tell you what you have to do next in the main quest.

My rule of purchasing games is that I ONLY buy games I intend on playing
My backlog grew mostly because when I buy games, I buy them on sale in bulk. For example this past black Friday I bought 10 games. Realistically I can't play them all at once, even though I have the Xbox Series X and it has quick resume which does allow me to play multiple games at a time, I still circle through maybe 3 games realistically at a time.
While I'm not a completionist I do as much as possible in games as well. And lastly, if I don't like a game I'll just drop it. I have way way many games to force myself to play a game I ended up not enjoying.
Oh and how can I forget, if a game releases that I'm hyped to play that is a situation I just play that first then jump back into what I was previously playing

I typically only play one game at a time. I might have a side indie game, or something like Monster Hunter I dive into a night or two a week.

Lol I went to a sale at a used game shop and left with 5 games I want to play but, I just know I probably won't, but they are ones I'd like to, and keep in my collection

It's so bad sometimes... at least you got them on sale!

It's not a Backlog. It's a list of "Future Adventures". Sounds less daunting and negative.

      Future adventures! Riiiiight!

I like that. Makes my (way too long of a) list sound way less intimidating 😛

For me it's a combination of having periods in my life where I can't find the peace of mind to game and taking a looong time to get back to a game sometimes and getting games while I'm still playing something else. My love of (j)rpgs doesn't help either, as it will take quite a long time to finish one of them.

Mood! Sometimes you gotta really have that peace of mind to do it.

I no longer play multiple games at once. Max I play is 2 - 3 - 1 console, 1 hand held and an ongoing game (FF XIV etc.). If I start a game, I finish it. However, if I am not "feeling it" then I either shelve it - meaning I intend to go back to it and/or start over when I feeling like playing it or I abandon it - meaning I no longer have any desire to pick this game up.
This has helped tremendously with being able to finish more games and I found myself enjoying games more then ever because I'm not being distracted by something else or having multiple stories going in my head.
Games get on my backlog simply because they overlap with other games that have come out or they overlap with something I'm already playing. Example: Xenoblade Chronicles 3 came out same day as Digimon Survive, but I also had AI: The Sominum Files nirvanA Initiative arrive at my door step the same day. So that's 3 games I really want to play, so I mapped them out with what I'm going to play first etc.

For me its a combination if buying things to self soothe and not having the energy (mentally or physically) to play anything. My backlog is the games I own and the games I don't own but are still excited about even if its years later.
I am getting better at finishing games before I move on to the next one. I only play on PlayStation so to help me finish I go for as many platinums as I can. This gives me a separate goal outside of finishing the game to keep things interesting. Also if I don't like a game and can not platinum it I just DNF and move on.

I buy as a collector, and sometimes I can end up spending too much money. There are some new games I want to play because of FOMO, but I do tend to buy anything that's less than $20 that I want. It leads to a big backlog.

Steam sales and game bundles. Basically buying more games than I can play

Combination of things for me which I've played almost all my backlog now which was primarily n64/ps2/gc/xbox games and I wasn't interested in any game that came out during the ps4 and xone gen hardly there was only 25 the whole generation I thought were worth playing and a few are still on the list because I prioritized the older generation consoles and now im working my way through the ones I haven't played yet along ones I'm playing now that are new but the cuase for me was primarily not being old enough to have a job to get games back then now its due to me playing multiple games at once and forgetting what I'm supposed to do or I just lose all interest then I don't consider it part of the backlog anymore

Juggling too many games, then just forgetting.

      Yeah, that's my biggest reason!

I either start a game and see it through to the end or I don't. I tend to play a bunch of shorter games so it's easy for me. I tend to method act whenever I play games and don't stop playing until I am a done a certain section of that game is done for the day. I don't stop until I am done, unless if the game is super boring or frustrating, and my tolerance for that kind of stuff tends to be somewhat high.
Now in the off chance in that I do put off a game is when a game is taking me longer to get through it than I ever anticipated or the game has a weird curveball in it's design I hate that to to come to grips with like redoing lots of content(depends on the game) or a game requiring you to collect stuff in order to progress or a game having lives instead doing the normal thing and just letting you restart as many times as you want.

A lot of times if I get towards the end and just want to finish I will just skip sidequests and extra content to finish it up! If it's boring or frustrating, I just sell it so it's not in my backlog anymore!

I always have those go to games for when I'm busy with life. Basically, during the week days I play either NBA 2k or Forza Horizon. The weekend, if I'm off, I'll hunker down and play a story based game. The problem is I own multiple gaming platforms so when the weekend comes, maybe I don't feel like being in front of my PC, maybe I want to curl up in bed with my Nintendo Switch. Then I got back to 2k or Forza because its the week and the following weekend has seen a game released that I just want to play. Well, now that single player game I was working on over the weekend is on the back burner because the newest game has caught my eye.
Not to mention, I'm a huge JRPG fan so its ridiculously hard to get back into those games after taking a couple weeks away from them. I've completed 20 games since Legends of Heroes Trails of Cold Steel 4 has come out. I played half way through it, enjoyed it, but put it down and beat 20 other games since picking it up again. Same can be said for Ghost of Tsushima.
