Vet visits family farms raising pigs for bacon, pork

“The term ‘factory farm’ is used widely, most people think machines are making pigs,” says Tennessee veterinarian Dr. Seth Krantz of Tosh Farms. “We’re a family company and we depend on a network of other family farmers to raise these pigs.”
Today, Dr. Krantz examines piglets at Petrie Farm suffering from a case of diarrhea, which can be life threatening. “As caretakers who raise pigs, no one likes to see pigs get sick and die,” he says. “All of us that raise animals for food come under fire for using antibiotics. As a doctor, I know all animals and people get sick from time to time. To provide the best care, I think antibiotics are appropriate. Otherwise the only option is to hope the animals get better, or the animals will die. There’s no in-between.”
Dr. Krantz explains every antibiotic for pigs has a strict withdrawal time which farmers must adhere to, per federal regulations, to ensure the antibiotic is cleared from the pig’s system before the pig is sent to market. “We want young people to get a start in agriculture,” says Dr. Krantz. “A lot of them have taken that to heart, built barns, and are doing a fantastic job raising pigs.”
