I was 2nd Baritone when our little village band played this as a contest piece in Norwich about 25 years ago! I think we came 4th out of 5, but was a fun piece to tackle!

1st bassoon kicks ass. remember the countless nights of my face being numb trying to perfect my solo in the second movement.

As a trombonist I have never loved and hated a piece this much at the same time. Love the first movement, hate the second movement, third movement isn’t bad

I played this in Wind Symphony in college, performed May 1 2011. About 7 hours later the world learned that Osama bin Laden was dead. Best coincidence ever.

if sparke was a shit enough orchestrator to write the bassoon solo in the wrong octave the bassoonist themself can at least be proud of it. i play the solo at about f and take the E at 7:27 up an octave because 1. it's beautiful 2. the voice leading makes more sense
