When someone older than you and more knowledgeable than you speaks you listen... I am looking forward to seeing more and listening to more from Still in Old School! Thanks.
Agree 200% !!
Back when I was a kid in the 50’s and 60’s in upper East Tenn, ,when I’d go hiking with the Boy Scouts or just my friends , we’d find stills out in the woods . Sometimes we’d hear that thumper going and we’d turn around and go another way as they didn’t like it when people showed up when they were working. I had a friend whose Uncle made shine and now I wish I’d gotten him to show me how to do it . Good Video. Brings back memories
Back when people respected privacy. Wish your generation wouldn't have ignored everything the government was doing.
It's a damn shame that old school's contents got erased and they renamed to old school grower instead of still old school. That was a fabulous reference channel, as is this one.
2 questions I didn't see in the comments.
1 do I still need to dump the head?
2 can you drink the thumper liquid?
Thanks for all the information you have shared. Truly remarkable.
Thank you kindly and to those of you that watched and did not give a like , ill be prayin for you and bless your heart.
Nothing like finding gems on RUclips I could listen to the professor all day
You will teach many interested people with your knowledge and experience. Just keep doing the videos and you will have people like me enjoying and using this to keep the tradition alive. Thank you so very much!!!
My old school friends have been trying to help me but when they explain it they leave so much out. Thanks for your indepth explanation 👍
Sweet Water , Sweet Spot....i really appreciate you for this.
Hell yeah!!! I'm a admirer of the old school at 44 now and always have been. The greatest lessons I've learned were taught by older gentlemen.. I appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge with us so that we can hopefully continue the old ways and by doing so previous generations never go anywhere and stay relevant
I literally asked this gent what a thumper is. I'm from Ireland so I've never seen these. Great of him to make a video about it. You should link his channel in the description. Would help his channel to grow a lot :)
Thank You Sir, I appreciate the straight information. I especially love how you did not try to add big words, big concepts and just delivered truthful feelings of knowledge. Once again, Thank you Sir.
Jonathan

Still Loving the Chanel ,just doing some catch up binge watching
You have excellent teaching technique
Another great video Old School! 👍🏻
Thank you for sharing your knowledge! I've heard many theories about thumpers & none was as simple as yours!
Jus loved seeing this video 😃
Reminds me of great and great great granddads discussing whiskey making. Great great died in1959 age 100, greatgrandad died at 87. They used malted wheat and barley. Hard to find sheetcopper these days. Think I will have to build a still. Thanks for the memories. I do remember them talking of building a hidden tank on farm truck. Never got caught. They also made white lightening, sugar yeast water. They used charred oak strips to quick age the whiskey.
This was so informative cant wait for the other videos and this man is the Yoda of shiners
These old school tech pieces are awesome, thank you for taking the time to produce these videos and teaching us all about the old school craft
Very well-explained, from someone who clearly knows what he's talking about. Great video!

Awesome, very much enjoyed your videos. Can’t wait to see more. Thanks again.
Been stilling a few years and can always learn. Thank you, love your info.
I appreciate that! There is always something new to learn.
It’s great to see the old pros sharing secrets. Question? You talked about methanol. Isn’t methanol wood alcohol? I thought were trying to get ethanol. But thumpers are not that obvious so it’s great to see how this works.
Can't wait to hear more about it
I fill you explain how to real good keep it in
Up
Thank you for the info !!!!
You cut a v in the end of the pipe that's in the Trumper that let's the vapors escape into the liquid it heats up the liquid doubled distills it .I was thought this method 40 years ago by old-timers in the woods one setup that most ppl never seen is slobberbox .
Thanks for the knowledge old timer ♥️ looking forward to future lessons 💯 keep them coming
Bitchin share shiner we love it keep em coming I run a pot still a thumper myself ! ❤❤
great video keep up the great job
Great video. I learned a lot from your vast experience.
Glad it was helpful!
Great video!!!!
You talked about how long or deep/position the vapor arm of the pot still goes into the thumper can you also discuss the length and depth/position of the vapor arm that comes out out the thumper and goes into the condenser.
Just into the top of the thumper
Very interesting stuff. Enjoyed the talk.
Good information on the slow heat up, that's the best way.
Love it Still'in Old School
love the barrel thumper, how did you build that?
I bought it from etsy. It's a 10 gallon that had 100% corn likker aged in for 3 years
So much great info! Thanks
Thanks for sharing your knowledge...
A couple of questions; Copper pipe size into and out of the thumper are different size. Why? Also, at what point does the thumper get too full of distillate, creating a pressure buildup in the main pot? Thank you!
Thank you for your wisdom
Fricken awesome!
I'm a beginner and I want to tell you thank you for your information thank you for putting it where I can understand it I'm a backwoods country boy and I have to actually do something to understand it's better if I put my hands on it to do it I will learn a lot quicker and I'm now beginning to understand what a thump keg does I sure didn't start with but but can you add anything else to the thump keg for flavor
EXCELLENT VIDEO
Much respect!
I'm digging the old school style. Striat forward and easy to understand . You can run that without a thumper right ? But I would need to run it twice or no ?
Yep you can run without a thumper, and yep you run it twice
No if you're mash is good
@@PoppaLongroach I run 190 proof without thumper it's all about the mash .
@@jbrown1971 gotta let room for flavor, I could run a 1.080gravity with dady yeast and get same thing. I'll take flavor over proof, the extra work to run it twice is time well spent
@@PoppaLongroach why when I'm Geting high proof and full flavor with one run I'm running 100 year old recipe that was my grand pas one grain I use a d I'm sure you heard of it hog shorts most shiners now never heard of it makes the achol context super high.
Holy shit again simplified information thanks for your knowledge
Could you put gin ingredients in the thumper to achieve similar result as putting gin bag in a column condenser?
145F-155F is in reference to the temp in the boiler not in the top of column correct?
This video just popped into my feed. I've came a loooong way since then.
We all keep improving as long as we keep doing.
@StillnTheClear my wife has 2 rounds of chemo left then colon surgery. I miss making shine but things look great and I'll be back at it this summer
@@PoppaLongroach prayers for her, brother.
@@PoppaLongroachwish good health to you both
So what do you put in the thumper
Good stuff.. Does it do any good to use foam plumbers insulation on that horizontal arm going to the thumper to maintain temp going to the thumper?
Yes, I've seen people use those foam water noodles too.
so in the end it's gonna taste good and imma gonna be drunk again
Yeah that's interesting. Teach me my man!
What exactly is going into the Thumper? Can't quite make out what he is saying. My bad hearing or maybe just confused. Thanks!
I put high shots in it. 1/2 gallon of 150 to 160 peoof
@@PoppaLongroach Thanks! This helps a lot. Looking forwards to more of your videos.
When running corn liquor can you put corn in your thumper for added flavor?
Yes you can.
@@StillnTheClear is it best to use the corn from your mash or just use new corn straight from the bag ? Ty for the response i really appreciate it
@@johnpaxton1549 I would use corn from the mash. If you use fresh corn be sure to soak it overnight.
@@StillnTheClear ok ty ive been using around 140 proof corn shine in my thumper with copper scrubbers because i have an stainless steel still . I figured it would help it it
@@StillnTheClear sorry for so many questions. I have around half a pot full of mash left to run is it best to finish filling my pot up with water to make it full to run it or can i just run it half pot?
Would it be possible, to have a peated Barley only recipe?
Absolutely, my recipe is half cracked corn half malted corn. You could have all peted, half malted or any combination you want to chase the exact flavor you want!
Question for ya. The money I spent on this 20bgal pot still I am not impressed with the thumpernsize. I'm guessing it is 2 gal or under. I have an old Keg I want to use as a thumper is it bad to use that size thumper with a 20 gal
A 2 gallon thumper is too small for a 20 gal still. A 5 gallon still would be the minimum size. 10 gallon would be the top end side. I think a 15 gallon keg might be larger than needed, but I would try it before I ruled it out.
@@StillnTheClear thanks
@Still'n The Clear well they're telling me it is 5 gal. But the whole thumper will sit down inside a 5 gal bucket lol. Now I may not be a genius but just sayin
@@tomchristensen2914 make a video of you filling it with gallons of water. Then you will know and be able to proove the capacity of the thumper.
Good Content
I heat my 5 gallon still to temps in about 2 hours.....I take the first 4 ounces out as heads....too lsow?
@Still'n The Clear
do you know what happened to this channel? If you learn something let us know
what did you put in your thumper ?
'GOLD'. This information is priceless you couldn't buy these tips for love nor money, keep'em coming O S M you've got us glued yo the screen. Be safe mate.
Yes I will like to be able to make Mungi
Low and slow means 10 mins?
Yo, pops, did anyone said that you look like Christopher Reaves? You know Count Duku, Sauraman, Stephan from The Howling 2? Damn I will be but you do look like him! I have a question, are you anywhere in the vicinity near West Virginia?
Yep west virginia bots and raised
Born and raised
@@PoppaLongroach well hot damn! My Pa is back there. He's from Fairmont in Marion County! Unfortunately I was born and raised in once called California now Sodomfornia. The land of the fruits and nuts. Of course I'm the nut, 😂!
Still have kin folks there! Use to go to the family reunion, most of time on the farm, later at the Wave Tch pool. Fun times less the enemy number 1, POISON IVY👹😅.
@@stephensmith3708 I worked for the Manchin family in Fairmont and morgantown for over 20 years, I'm in preston county. Woohoo!! Small world man!! Our accent and dialect are as unique as West Virginia itself
@@stephensmith3708 my kids call me Pops btw, that is a regional thing too I think

Oh he is so sweet😊 from a Lady .
Damn good video
Does old-school Moonshiner have his own videos and does still in old-school have his own videos I don't know much about this stuff I'm getting new videos on my phone
He sure does. Here it is ruclips.net/channel/UCkH6lNkUDmrnzSws3FkCY9A
Does the thumper have to be a minimum of 1/3 of your still
👍
Ok, so where's the beef? Does this continue?
Have you ever used two thumpers?
You need to show the internals of the thumper an pot still, or at least a diagram, thanks, good info otherwise
Krep it oldschool
The thoughts of methanol have been all wrong. It is produced the entire distillation process with the highest quantity being the tails. NOT the foreshot. Also not enough is produced to be harmful. Blindness and other issues came from people using lead and radiators in still making.
