what really hurts is that gacha in general can never be good because the concept is to make the game worse to sell you stuff, BUT games like WuWa and also Genshin at its beginning have actually great gameplay in them - like a world like zelda, paired with cool combat ideas (even genshins elemental idea and the interaction with the overworld is better than 90% of other games on the market) - cool graphics, super diverse cast and playstyles. Like the games itself have soooooooo many good elements. Wuwas combat is the most fun i had since sekiro and monster hunter with a combat system . Like these devs know what they are doing. and then they stuff this great game behind energy systems and gated progression. If this would be more like warframe or Path of exile but still with that quality they would get EVEN more reputation in the west.
On the other hand these games bring the necessary revenue to have such quality games BECAUSE they monetize so predatory and other companies struggle exactly because of this. a 60 dollar box title cannot pay usually for a service game with this quality. So sometimes it looks like a necessary evil.

Thing about gachas is that they're built around the premise of intermittently stopping the player from having fun. And the solution they offer to get over this hurdle they create is either excruciatingly inconvenient or to just pull out your wallet. By default, gachas can never be 'great'. They can be 'good' but never 'great' because of this self-sabotage. IMO every gacha should at best reach a 7/10 review score.

I think most of people did not try enough amount of gacha games to understand that, there are gacha games, which you can 100% say the game play is, player spending money. Yes, there are games, the way to play is spending money, if you do not want to, then you can just watch, sometimes you may click something, then back to watch the game goes on with or without you...That's how far we have went. I'd say too far....

32:48 just a small criticism. I think for reaction videos and specially from other CCs who undoubtedly spent a lot of effort researching, scripting, and editing, watching the entire thing is a must. I even notice that Asmon is not skipping ads on the videos he reacts to because even he knows that what he's doing is easy af.
No offense, but it rubs me the wrong way when I see CCs react to a video made with apparent effort and skips some part of it. Primarily because I think reaction videos are literally the easiest content to do. Even easier than archiving content or collecting funny videos. So the least reactors could do is actually react to the entirety of the video and then credit it.
As for him not getting to the point. What he did is the usual essay format. Introduction, demonstration, then conclusion.
If he didn't mention these games and specifically mentioned what makes them good or bad, then the audience would just get confused because they don't know where the conclusion is coming from.
I hope you don't take this as an ad hominem.

    • @hexjuice
      @hexjuice  Месяц назад +2

This is a fair criticism! I mostly did this because I felt I couldn't add anything of substance, and I was concerned about actually being transformative because I hate the idea of being a "oh yeah uhhuh" reactor for half of a video.
I will take this into account though! Is my reasoning good? IDK. At the time, it felt like being respectful bc I don't wanna just steal content. But I see this perspective as well.

Everyone that plays these games will always have to spend an excess amount of money. You are granted a calculated mass of resources at the start, which are quickly drained through player-unfriendly, rng upgrade-systems.
There are a finite amount of resources in the world, granting the illusion that you can progress through merit alone.
The time-gated systems will always leave you feeling unfulfilled, until you win your next big gamble, overwriting your previous pain to continue the cycle.
Tower of adversity in wuwa, is among the greatest culprits, as it’s designed to force you to blow your resources on “teams” in which you will certainly make mistakes with resource allocation, by design.
If you make any mistakes with your time-gated resources in these games (leveling your characters for fun), you doom your account, as you can only wait to replenish them in small amounts. That is the major difference between these and other games.

IMO the gatcha system ruins the story a lot too. If they don't use the "multiple battlesuits per character reflecting their growth" model you end up with tons of character that have no chance to get a proper story arc. Most of them are one-dimensional that just 'exist' and do a thing or two for the plot. To sell them more they also need to be perfect and "the best at their job". It's almost ridiculous how they make all the story or event dialogues praise them.
If there is a new chapter it has to be focused on the new character (or the new battlesuit of an old character, which means development so that's cool)
ok I am only talking about hoyo games..

  • @latitude990

Gachas aren't bad, they just provide something different than traditional games. People that say they're bad are just using the "traditional game rating scale." How many traditional games can provide thousands of hours of fun gameplay? If you started Genshin in year 2 or 3 and only played a few hours a week, you probably wouldn't even notice it was a gacha game outside of the wishing mechanic in the game. There is so much content that it would probably take you longer to beat it than something like Elden Ring.
People used to pay $60 for a 40-hour playthrough and would still call that game legitimately great, is it so hard to imagine there are players that would rather play the first 30 hours on release and then 20 hours a month forever because they really like the game? Not to mention, people always over-criticize the pressure of spending in gacha games. Such a vast majority of the audience is perfectly content with spending $0-5 a month and still absolutely enjoying the game.

My thoughts about gacha vs regular games before watching the rest of the video is that gacha give bite sized gameplay on the regular and will have constant updates and new content. Meanwhile most live service games I can think of off the top of my head are shooters and stuff without any real story or character focused content. I'm willing to bet there's SOMETHING out there, but... whatever. Obviously if I want some more complex gameplay I have my steam library.
And... yes... I'll admit... getting an early drop or winning a 50/50 is a thrill. Getting a new, premium toy to play with is fun. And yes, I am aware that it's all quite predatory, but I've honed my self-control over the years to keep it from hurting me too bad.
Also, hearing other people say "Inazuma wasn't that good" is so validating. I hated that by the end. It had a few good moments, the region itself was fine, but the main story was... ugh.
The one thing that I think is kinda unique to gacha is how people get attached to a character because "oh, I have this character instead of this other character because I got lucky with them." On the one hand, it sucks that some players just won't have all the characters because they can't afford them, on the other it's fun to compare and contrast how people got through parts of the game with their unique rosters. That said, with appropriate balancing, this would naturally happen anyway so long as enough viable team comps existed, it just wouldn't be forced by pay walls and limited banners.

Hex, you are right that the most impacted by gacha is combat. But PGR exists for a reason to bring suffering. You can try PGR and if you will stick to it long enough to reach mid/endgame, I guess you will add whole game next to Hologram as good combat part.
Or you can start PGR, go to memory rescue missions as an early game player and take a challenge that broke quite a lot streamers like Mtashed :D It never gets old to see how new players try to clear it.
By the way there is such an old game as Girls Frontline which is free and stripped of gacha gacha game, but the futher you go, then more its combat goes from "auto clear" to the sweatest microcontrol ever, expacialy in ranking :D

Hot take: There are so many bad games out there, that are just boring or unappealing to a load of people. That includes gacha, AAA, and indie games as well. So if I do enjoy a gacha game, having legitimate fun with it, then I'll call it a good game. I'll say it has a right to be justly regarded and rated as a nongacha game. Most people have a problem with its monetary systems, but not the games themselves. Because right now, Gacha is evolving at a rapid pace, even to AAA levels.

I look at gacha games similarly to how I look at MMOs. At their core, a lot of these games suck. If you removed the monetization and live service aspects, what's left isn't great compared to normal games. But these games tend to offer something that "good games" don't, be it their endless nature in both cases, gamba simulator in gacha, or social aspects in MMO.

Gatcha games have their positives and negatives.

It's like reading the unabridged version of Count of Monte Cristo... Like it's good, but... What he didn't mention though, is that it's THE MOST f2p gacha game EVER. Not only from the viewpoint of being able to clear all content with lower rarity operators, but also from how generous the rates on banners are.

Gacha games in general are garbage. Fucking pngs basically.
Now that is changing, we are in the golden era of gachas, gacha games that have quality like Wuthering Waves, Genshin, ZZZ, NTE?, HSR...
Of course WuWa being the best of them all at least in terms of quality and gameplay.

I know she won't, but she's missing the part where Genshin starts getting good. I felt the same way about the story, they've stepped up in presentation and pacing after Inazuma. It's no award-winning story, but it's certainly enjoyable.

I think gachas are character story narrative driven games.
With Hex's take that gachas are monetization, then that would imply that western games such as FIFA are gacha games which I don't think most people would think fits.
Thus the importance of a good story in a gacha game is paramount.
I think the characters of a gacha can only be as good as it's story.
