That's me and my mate Wilf in the middle of that crowd, we were a pair of 14 year old punks and along with our mate Fletch we went to punk gigs every friday night in Derby. We saw the Damned, The Clash,UK Subs, Crass, Vibrators ,The Stranglers, Sham 69, Anti Pasti and god knows how many others before we left school. I moved away then and we lost touch but then thanks to the internet we made contact again and had a reunion 21 years after those mad days in 2001. Fletch was still a punk haha and Wilf was as mad as ever, we had the best time remembering the all those gigs we went to and the capers and scrapes we got into. And that was that, never seen those guys again since, crazy really.

This is the ep that made me start a band when I was 14 in 1980. We went to the local pawn shop, decided what instruments we would play and practiced 3 chords of wonderful liberating musical violence. Oh the power....almost too much for a young teen living with mum and dad back then. It was like a secret culture, people hated us yet we recognised each other anywhere in the world.

@@Arcadelife1 Indeed! How could I forget John? A lovely bloke who, like Sister Sledge, was 'Lost in Music'. Not a music snob, had the John Peel attitude of, "All is welcome here". Even tho' he had a hand-written note sellotaped on the counter that said "WE DON'T SELL DISCO!". I think it was his wife who co-served there and I remember her reaction when I'd got my first pay packet (from Beechams in Coleford) and bought a stack of albums. "I love it when you guys get proper jobs". So many great stories from that place, e.g. when 'Strawberries' by The Damned came out and the first pressing had a strawberry scented scratch and sniff lyric sheet with it and stank out the shop! Or John's massive under-the-counter bootleg collection. Happy days. I think when he turned the Monmouth shop into a VHS emporium it all went downhill, which was a shame. I think I nearly burst into tears when it shut. But as the Kinks/Kirsty McColl sang, "Thankyou for the days"...

UK politics is a complex area linked to al sorts of factors and indices. An excellent and accurate summary of things (which incidentally can be applied to the Labour Party, the Conservatives & indeed Liberal governance of old) can be found on the first track of this E.P by UK punk band, Discharge, from Stoke-on-Trent.
"De-control, de-control, we've been shit on for far too long!" is sung with a desperation and sense of resignation, knowing that yes, those of us without wealth and property have been shit on by the monied classes for far too long. Sadly, this is set to continue for I'd say, at least another 250 years if historical, democratic change is used as a barometer.

Only in your dreams! Elvis is still the King of Rock and Roll. The Beatles were the most influential band in history. Punks bands have other sounds, other purposes, but has no way to compare them to the pioneers, this never! So you think I don't know about punk bands? The Ruts, Dead Kennedys, The Dickies, Ramones, The Saints, U.K Subs, Stiff Little Fingers, Chelsea, Buzzcocks, Dead Boys etc. They are better than Discharge. Hardcore is crap!

Elvis was a fat clown, the beatles a pop group, what about the real musicians like Gene Vincent, Woodie Guthrie, Johnny Cash et al..

European punk always sounded very dark and apocalyptic. I guess I’m thinking Broken Bones, The Exploited, Anti Cimex, and Discharge the most. English Dogs did a couple of great albums too.

It's a little known fact, but was often whispered in political circles at the time, that Britain would never have taken Germany at Dunkirk or indeed won the Second World War without the regiments of Stoke-on-Trent. As soldiers they were totally calm, fearless and brilliantly strategic as well.
