- I always take a jaw harp with me on trips. Found it awkward to pack without some kind of case, so decided to make a quick one from a fallen tree in my yard. This is nothing fancy, and I'm terrible at the harp... but it was fun and entertaining and now I have a memento from Hurricane Fiona and also won't damage my little harp.
All i can ever think about when i see these things is that one person using one and it shattered their tooth 😬😂
That one was cap, you could clearly see the black marker ink smudged on the edges of the tooth.
I Actullay chipped one of my canines playing one haha
@@proxyhx2075 i bought one as a kid and it never played it after trying it because i hit my teeth so hard and i had already broken my front tooth and felt like it was gonna happen again. I bet people have dont it.
Yeah I totally fucked my front tooth up on one I got when I was a kid and kept flinging it against my tooth on accident

I’m afraid my jaw harp skill is extremely poor! I prefer using it as a beat during guitar songs 😆. In awe of people who are good at it.
No freaking way, I went to a tool auction the other day and bought a box of tools. I’m the bottom was this old random hand forged metal thing I’ve never seen before. I was gonna toss it bc it had no value to me but the craftsman ship was so good that I kept it. I think this video just helped me identify what the hell it is and now I have to run to my garage and look at it again. It was a barn auction and the guy was a smith, I’m guessing he made himself one of these
If you have a hand forged one, then you are a lucky soul! I've never played anything but this cheapish version (it hasn't affected my enjoyment of it, but some day I'll buy a proper one ;).

There's one instrument similar to that that the old generations used to pick up ladies back then... It's just a piece of metal and the case to cover the entire thing... I don't know how to play it, but this instrument reminded me of it...

That a the husquvarna forest axe, damn shame you haven’t shaved down that handle, they give us clubs on tools I never understood.
Love the axe, may be a tad big for roughing out, but its all I have in the smaller size. I'm ok with the handle, but it is a tad big as you say 👍👍

They can be extremely annoying in the right hands.
No one seems to mention it, but whittling wood is crazy. So easy to hurt yourself if you aren't careful, even very experienced carvers/wittlers cut themselves.
Props to you man. How many times have you cut your hand open? 😂
Very few times so far, and the only times were with the crook knife in the early days. It can happen to the best of them unfortunately😳

Curiosity FYI: that instrument Is widely used in Sicily since medieval times. It Is believed it comes from Asia as It Is portrayed on an old chinese drawing (400 BC).

I did something exactly like this the other day I was at work and I broke a broom handle sweeping in the barn and had to chisel off the wide part to fit back in the broom handle holder thing. Basically the same thing

Yea, wood is ok. They usually are referring to metal hammers that will damage the axe. 👍

You probably shouldn't. Do I on occasion? Yes, depending on what I am carving. I would recommend not doing however. I tend to do it sometimes when carving handles on cups.

Yup.. carpenter pattern axe and the mora 120 (as well as 62 and 63 crook knives.. or 61 and 62, i forget which the numbers are). All a person needs👍
@@thecoffeefuelledwoodsman i use those and a bandsaw. Carving is fun but starting with a big piece is hard. So cheating with a bandaaw is nice when its big bits of wood

These are cheap jaw harps that aren't really worth making a case for. But that case is great, I need some of those carving tools you have.
I would place the leather to tie around the arms, not the reed though.
I agree to all your points! Would have liked to put the leather tie where you said but went with the easy route since I didn't plan it out properly. Some day I will buy a nice harp and make a nicer case 😉👍

Oh yah, of course, but it's solid metal. All that really needs protection is the tang. This was just a fun Sunday project. I could add a leather top I suppose but it doesn't really need it. Thanks for watching!
