How to Choose a College Major | Advice from a UCLA Grad

- Last week, we discussed ways to go about choosing a college. In today's video, we're going to address the big question of *picking a major*!!
The biggest consideration here is finding a balance between what you enjoy and practical career fields that you can apply your major to post-grad. In my personal experience, I entered college unsure of what I eventually wanted to major in and it wasn't until sophomore year that I narrowed it down to economics. Although I note that determining a major (and minors) is a flexible process, I would keep in mind that the earlier you lay out a plan and/or switch majors, the better!
Good luck to you- college is such an exciting time!
For the rest of April I'll be posting college-related guidance videos, so stay connected and let me know if there's anything you'd like to see. Don't forget to leave a comment below about what you're majoring in or deciding between!

I’m scared that my major and career will be boring......but the fun ones make no money
I'm watching because people ask me this so often, and I never really know what to tell them. Solid content!
Ahh haha thanks Jay!!
I'm a senior in high school and i'm supposed to apply for college soon and i'm stuck because there are so many things I want to do! I want to study chemistry/environmental science/energy engineering and do some form of economics as well as chinese studies. Global studies also sounds very interesting as you said! There are too many things i want to do and i don't want to lock down or commit to just one career my whole life! I'm stuck! I want my career to involve creativity but I don't want to study any kind of art :(
Ahh I totally feel you! I had the hardest time deciding too
I would do some research on jobs in those different major fields and see which ones seem appealing! And you can always try a few online courses before college to get an idea of which ones you like studying~
love the way you format your videos, straight to the point but creative!

I wish we had us system where you choose your major later I don't even know if I like mine
what is your major??
hi, still researching the different majors and what not at UCLA. Ive been accepted to UCLA with the business economics major. Do you mind going into more depth of the difference between business economics and just economics ? Thank you
Congrats on your acceptance! Business economics has a 3.5 minimum GPA requirement and you have to take a set of accounting classes/business labs, outside of that it’s pretty similar.
is economics a lucrative field? what kind of jobs can u get wit an econ degree?
Is it bad to major in english as a pre law major? Or if wanting to become an english teacher, isn't english necessary and a good path if you know for certain what job you are looking for straight after school?
I am stuck between Finance and Computer science
I like both but don't know what to choose. Please help
Try out a little bit of both, and see which you’re better at and/or like more
Consider double major
Hey, where do you find these introductory classes from?
Hi! I am interested in UCLA. What was the application process like, and what do they require? Google results can be complicated, lol. Better to hear it from an actual student.
I really dont know which major should I pick I like biology and to a lesser extent chemistry! But I like drawing so I am thing about Architecture or Interior design!? And I like business because I like Maths as well! Idk what major should I pick!? I'm a Senior at High School! Please help me out!!!
We have sort of the same issue
Hey, does anyone have a Mortuary Science degree or is working towards one? What made you? Legitimate question.
I’ve never heard of that as a major! Hopefully someone watching this is :)
I have always wanted to do a music, theatre / film kind of majors hard to choose but whenever I mention this to anyone they say I would be wasting my parents money, time and won't get anywhere with that degree.. I thought of doing english major but it's just not me...
aw, I feel you on that struggle. it's a fine line between doing what you want to do and balancing it with the practical world and making money. maybe you can find another major you like, or try to double major/minor in music/theatre/film!
ninhao. les cours que j'ai suivis m'ont tous plu
Hi Ally, thanks for making this video ! I'm not sure if my question is directly correlated to this video since I just (or am about to) graduated from another UC school (with a degree in Media Cultural Studies) but I was possibly considering grad school down the line. The industry I want to enter is sports journalism/reporting and I was wondering if you had any advice/recommendations on doing a grad program in communications/journalism or branching out to a grad program outside that realm such as business. Thanks !
Hi Jordan!! It seems like a pretty specific focus (journalism/reporting) so I wouldn’t recommend general business school for branching out. You could branch out by looking into journalism programs, sports or sports specific business programs or even other media fields like anchoring. Hope that’s helpful! And yay haha high five for mutual UC grads :)
What should I take if I want to go into forensics
Hi David, if you’re very set on doing forensics, I would recommend looking at specific universities that offer a forensics program or major. Other possible majors that could be applied to forensics I would think would be majors like criminal justice, biology, chemistry or some mix of those. Hope that helps!
@@allygong yes ma'am thank you so much..
David Hunt you’re welcome David!
Medical laboratory technology
imagine having your parents pay for your uni lmao
I know, it is crazy
