the glass harmonica is a series of tuned glasses spinning on an axle and played with wet fingers. in the 18th century people were warned of it's effect on sensitive temperaments. mesmer used it as part of his "animal magnetism" treatments. necromancers used it to summon the dead. some of the instrument's most popular players went mad, and by the 19th century the instrument had been banned. in fact, it was probably poisoning from the lead in the glass which toppled their reason, so it's perfectly safe to listen to.
Completed by Mozart on May 23 1791 (K617) for the blind glass harmonica virtuoso Marianne Kirchgessner. First performed in Vienna Burgtheater on June 10 1791.
Glass Harmonica invented by Benjamin Franklin a contemporary of Mozart two of the greatest genus ever. All the greats of that day almost composed for it unfortunately to many of it lost. A scare campaign about negative effects of the instrument on the mind got it near forgotten.
Well... it's an automated way to finger-play/ring crystal glasses. You can see people play like this on crystal glasses on a table, with different amounts of water in each.
Nice just wonderful, for someone that doesnt know much about Classical music, I felt like i just hear something few people have ever heard, and thats too bad.
The Glass Harmonica was invented by Benjamin Franklin. It was the lead in the old make of the instruments that caused the poisoning. Nowadays they do not use the lead, but a kind of glass that they now use in the glockenspiel.
When I first heard this piece, it was study excerpts from a course on The Great Courses, Mozart’s Chamber Music, featuring a glass harmonica that sounded in the octave as here. But when I looked for a complete recording, the glass harmonica sounded in an octave lower, at concert pitch. Do there exist both transposing and non-transposing glass harmonicas, or is it the player’s preference? Please simply answer my question; no need to explain your answer.
Lovely music. Very frustrating to be interrupted twice in the middle of the music with ads. I am very impressed with the glass harmonica. Was this the originally intended instrument for this music?
Very clever to have the glasses rotated mechanically instead of fingers skimming crystal glass rims. Would also like to hear original instrument with crystal wine glasses.
Benjamin Franklin invented it. Mozart wrote the piece for this type of mechanized instrument. There is also a recording of it played on musical glasses (unmechanized) by Bruno Hoffman.
They sound a bit different from each other, and both are used sometimes in certain compositions. Glass harp is the one with wine glasses, glass harmonica (or armonica) is the nested bowls rotating.

Thank you for the information, I never understood why this instrument was not as popular as others.
Now I know.
Thanks again.
@@louisacuriel4651 The fact it is made of glass doesn't help matters either.
Someone says it was banned because a child died during a concert.

One of the rarest gems of Mozart's final year. Beautiful composition.
The original benefactor of must be equally talented.
Thanks for the upload.
Super 👍.
This is truly beautiful. The glass harmonica adds an other worldly element. Bravo Mozart, Ben Franklin and the musicians!
Never heard this piece before. What a find!
Same here😊
Mozart's very last piece of chamber music.
What a sweet piece
So Mozart, so wonderful, so musically playing...
As beautiful as it is i bet it's nothing compared to hearing it in person.
Beautiful, as an ex-Oboist it was excellent listening to Heinz Holliger!!!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
He is an inspiration to all of us getting on a bit.
It is wonderful, Bravi tutti!
Mozart, ladies and gentlemen. Say no more. ❤
Absolutely beautiful
UNBELIEVABLE.
Just beautiful!!!!!!❤.

I didn't know it was Benjamin Franklin's invention, has a beautiful sound, unique in music

It was more than a scare campaign. Glasses at that time were infused with lead and prolonged exposure caused cancer.
Che meraviglia!

I had no idea this was a real instrument😮
I think Benjamin Franklin was his inventor if I'm not mistaken.
Yes. B.Franklin invented it. Mozart lived at the same time.
Mozart saw a demonstration of the Glass Harmonica and wrote a couple pieces for it.
Subbed! This is so cool!

@@TheModicaLiszt it annoys me a lot, too, so I installed uBlock Origin.
Faszinierender Klang - leider etwas langweilig vorgetragen und auch nicht immer gut zusammen allerdings: Sehr gut aufgenommen. Dank an den Tonmeister.

The flute sound is heavenly, is this a transverse flute in wood?
