From this video I learned that knowing when to be patient on the river is a skill just as important as driving. Great video, flank, & explanation.

      You nailed it. 👍🏻
Especially hard when time is money and steering is faster..
Southbound vessels behind you, and possibly having to adjust their speed as to not impede you, but you know they are there…. northbound vessels waiting… and…
It’s a unique situation where everyone has to wait while we take our time and float.
As a younger pilot, it would force me into less than ideal situations.
With experience I’ve learned to embrace the chill time and video it.. 👍🏻

I’ve noticed my flanks are better overall when I video them.
I don’t post them all, but I do go back and critique myself of see how I could have done better.. videoing or flanking.

I really enjoy your videos of being a towboat captain on the Mississippi. I lived in Belleville, Illinois which is about 15 miles east of St. Louis. We used to go down to Ft. Kaskaskia and watch the tows go by and walk along the river. I would love to ride for a day or two on a big towboat. I was hoping you would show how they laced up the barges when you put the towboat in the lock behind the shorter string of barges. I bought a model of a towboat but have not had time to assemble it as of yet. I was a locomotive engineer in my younger days and I love to hear those EMDs hum. Thanks for the great videos. Tom

That’s neat stuff, and thank you.
I have over 1500 videos on RUclips. I’m sure there are many like that.
I’ll definitely go out on tow more next trip. I’ve had many “requests” for that type of stuff. I need to walk more so I don’t get too fat. 👍🏻

      Thank you. Glad you enjoy.
Yes.. I’ve had my share of both… and bridge piers.
Any pilot that hasn’t is either inexperienced or lies.

Are z drives common on tow boats yet ? I have to imagine they would help when you drive a turn .

    • @marktwained

They can help a flank. Don’t think they help steer them. But I’ve not drove one yet.

How do you decide whether to flank the point or flank the bend? Thanks✌

Do you have to drive it going up stream instead of flanking

    • @marktwained
      @marktwained  11 месяцев назад +3

Flanking is done with flowing current going downstream
