The electronic tachometers will rest at about 1500 - 2500 RPM when not powered. It is normal. The needle needs to be lifted off (carefully! there are videos on youtube showing how to do this) and put back down in such a position that the tachometer will show 0 RPM when the ignition is on but engine not running.

Thanks for sharing your tach PCB replacement!
I also have a ‘79 with a tach that doesn’t work. I’ve replaced the tach filter hoping that would fix my issue but it didn’t. 😔
So it’s time to replace the PCB.
Did you video how you needed to calibrate the needle?
Keep posting more videos of your Corvette trials and tribulations!
    Take care!

      Hey man!
No problem, I did and it was super easy just be careful as the needles are super fragile and they are prone to break as It happened with mines lol

I didn’t do a calibration video because i ended up braking the needle as they were old and fragile. Be careful!!!essentially once you have installed the board and the tach back ( test it and see if the needle moves first) . You will have to turn your car on and let the car run for about 2-3 mins to a normal idle. pry out the needle, with your car on, Then you will put the needle back gently to its correct idle, then test acceleration and see if the needle is reading normal.
      Hope this helps

@@79corvette Thanks a lot for the heads up on being careful with pulling off the needle to recalibrate it.
Gotta love these older cars cars! There’s always something unexpected while doing one project or repair.

Very nice instructions on circuit board replacement. I did see in the comments you calibrated the needle. With the key off, the gauge should show about 1100. With the key placed to ON (not start), the gauge should display zero. Hope that helps. Also, for what ever it with worth, when I took mine apart, I replaced all the bulbs at the same time. Figured I had it apart. Why not right? 😊

I actually replaced the bulbs during the replacement but did not get to talk about it haha
