What are the in-fill panels made of? They look somewhat like hempcrete to me. So apparently later on you will plaster over the panels with a lime-based plaster? Can you post a recipe for that? Thanks.
They are woodwool - I think these particular ones are skanda heraklith 15mm boards. We will plaster over them with a lime render. The standard is to use a 2.5 to 1 mix of hot lime with sharp sand (not plastering sand). Ie - 1 lime to 2.5 sand - but it must be guaged by weight ideally, if not by volume. We also check hair in it to give it flexibility - should end up with about 25 hairs per inch of the trowel - or in practise, a couple of good handfuls per bucket.,
I've always been curious as to the composition of the infill panels on modern refits. In another comment you said these are 15mm woodwool panels. Is there anything interior to these? Is it going to be outside/ lime plaster- ww panel-sheepswool batts-ww panel- lime plaster \ interior? Also do you know how deep most of these timbers are?
woodwool inside and out, with sheepwool in the middle, and lime plaster / render on top of woodwool. timbers are about 80mm in this place - they vary a lot..
Great vid. I wonder how much longer this kind of knowledge will be about. Sad to think about.
Ian - it's getting more common now - a lot more understanding of these things thankfully - worry not!
Another educational video

And lime render would stick to the wood-wool?
Lime sticks beautifully to woodwool.
what about in 12months time when the oak shrinks?do you have to chisel of plaster to add more oakum?
No - just hammer through the lime - patch up with a bit of putty. You can hardly tell its been done, and how the old boys did it..

Your videos are great where are you based I have just brought a grade 2 listed building in Colchester I'm going to restore!
shropshire and London - we work all over the place... email if you like - peter@heritage-house.org and we can talk... Pete
Definitely not a new build. Likes of Barratts, whimpeys etc would have just caulked that up and let the home owner deal with it 5-6 years later lol.
