Thank you so much for this video series. Most tech tubers might talk about Proxmox or Unraid or something else cool, but not actually explain anything. I understand how to use such software, but my wife is just getting into PCs and I love that we can watch your videos together and she can learn and I find useful tips and tidbits that I had no idea about. Thanks Jay for such a great channel.
He is just the best!!!!!!!!!!!!
In the past I did use ZFS to run Virtualbox VMs with a 2008 HP dc5850 (AMD Phenom II X4 B97; 8GB DDR2). It worked great and I limited the memory cache (L1ARC) to 2GB. I have a RUclips video from 2018 to proof it. Nowadays I do the same with a Ryzen 3 2200G and 16GB DDR4. I can run 2 modern Windows or 4 modern Linux VMs at the same time.
If I want to run more VMs at the same time, I need more memory, not because of ZFS, but because of the memory requirements of Windows and Linux.
ZFS will optimize the L1ARC between the minimum and maximum values you specify and currently I use 1 GB and 4 GB, resulting in a L1ARC hit rate for disk IO of 98%. I don't have a need to run more VMs ate the same time, because I only have 2 hands :) Besides I boot most Linux VMs in 9 seconds and I reboot them in 7.5 seconds. (512GB Silicon Power nvme-SSD 3400/2300 MB/s). Compared to Linux, Windows needs twice the memory and 4 times the boot time :)
I am using Proxmox for almost 2 years now but still learning and this is the first series ever providing so much important details! Thank you so much!
I have a cluster and had to choose between ceph and glusterfs. I chose the latter for my containers and VM's but without being sure it is the right choice. I suppose class 14 and 15 will cover it all. I can't wait to see it 😉
Thanks for this amazing content!
Finally, got the patience to go past the part I didn't understand where you explain the answer to my confusion over IP address management Interface initial install setting for Proxmox 👍
It is a critically important course, well prepared because it's from the future :) Thank you so much sir.
Real hardware!!!! Finally the real deal. Finally someone went for the Real Deal!! Thank u Jackson!!!
Just started watching this series, with all the drama going on with Vmware right now, this series is going to get real popular.
Thanks!
Dankie!
Pro-tip: Make yourself a Ventoy USB, then when you download one of these images you just drop it on the ventoy stick and voila! Boot into proxmox in minutes! I love my ventoy sticks.
Didn't know that project, thanks!
Great series. Thanks very much. I hope your Red Wings have a great season this year...
This is so professionally done.
Amazing guide, what i ran into was that the 'out of range' issue. installing on a Supermicro (forgot ipmi u/p so had to plug in monitor) So had to use the terminal debug setup to get through. Also weird issue, it detected the network interface but for some reason it picked the one that wasn't connected (dual nic).
This was very helpful, Thank you very much!
Thank you Jay. Such an incredible channel and resource.
👍
Following the Tutorial. Been wanting to do this for a while.
Can you do a further video when you set up either a zfs or btrfs Proxmox and explain indepth the pros and cons? That would be too much for this video but I think it would make a good supplemental video later on 😁
The series is a little tedious as I'm a quick learner with years of experience in the filed. None the less, every so often, there's something basic I never had to learn and you explain it. So this is a great level for learning.
I am just getting into setting up my own home server farm and was on the fence with Proxmox vs OpenStack. So far, I am really enjoying this series on Proxmox. I enjoy all of your content! I was hoping to find some help in understanding how I would go about setting up three bare metal servers (all HP T800s with ooodles of ram, disk, and dual Xeons). I am assuming I would just install Proxmox onto each server, but it's not really spelled out anywhere that I can find. Maybe you could add "Class 17 - Working with multiple bare metal servers"?
Hi, great tutorial. A question, you mention mulitlpe times that the links are "in the show notes below" I do not see them. Where can I find these links?
The videos are really good, however it will e a big benefit if the video can show how the installation / configuration process goes when the management LAN is tagged.
PSA for people that want to use Rufus to create their bootable flash drive. Please make sure that you use the DD option to do this, otherwise it will not work correctly. This was at least true for version 6 when I first used Proxmox
seems to be still true. You will simply get an Grub-Error
Thanks bro
balena etcher is also an option right?
I believe it forces DD mode now for images that require it
Excellent video, very good explanation. Good Job!!!
Outstanding course THX! but is there a mistake where you say(near 18:04) "...choose an ip address that is not within.." (your router's ip range)? I am a networking nube and could not properly install PVE till I selected an address "within" my routers range - after verifying that instruction several ways.
Jay, you are awesome!
Pretty new to this. I have some basic linux experience and know proxmox runs off linux. I figured I would try and use my laptop that's about 10 years old to get some experience in. I don't know if it's supposed to automatically be assigned settings when using ethernet but I tried setting up using its wifi adapter. I think that's where my problems are.
I will likely watch this series multiple times to ensure I get all the basic info needed to get a usable setup. I am hoping to see some fundamental real world use tips that I have not found in other similar tutorials....for example ....how do you turn off or shutdown Proxmox? How are resources apportioned between client PC and server PC so if I had two PCs which is best to use for each role?
This series looks great. Where are the show notes?
Any explanation or video about the gateway/DNS things?
Terrific video series, I had no difficulty following along here. I do have a few questions around your discussion of the file system to choose for the Proxmox boot volume. You mention several times "it depends on your hardware" and "if you have the hardware", but the only specific hardware limitation you mention is amount of RAM.
Is the RAM usage the only consideration here, or is processor/performance a concern, too? Is the _amount_ of RAM the main concern, or (as a few other comments asked) should you have *ECC* RAM before you consider ZFS?
(Totally get that this is a Proxmox tutorial, not a ZFS deep dive. If you have references for good Proxmox boot volume file system considerations, I'd be thrilled to check those out.)
Amazing series.
Thank you so much for this content!!!
I love this series. Thank you so much.
How that browser found the proxmox connection? I have installed Proxmox on a dell desktop which has nothing but only the proxmox. Now what? I connect that Desktop (where the proxmox is installed ) into a linksys switch which is not connect to anything. Now I took a laptop and connect to that switch but still can't open that login scree on the browser. What am I doing wrong here?
usbimager was giving me the 908 error. once i used Etcher ( as outlined in the documentation as the preferred method) it worked.
thank for this for proxmox series i like it.......
watching the playlist for proxmox
I have a pc with windows 10pro that im going to turn my server into. How would i go about swapping them? Clone windows, put it on a drive, wipe the ssd in the pc and then install proxmox and then use the windows clone to put into a vm??
Thank you
10:26 Velociraptors can open doors. That made me want to rewatch Jurassic Park😂
Great tutorial so far!
Hi, I didn't see any of the show notes mentioned in the video?
there was some historical reason why windows hides some types of partitions. i dont remember the details but it was something to do with the windows boot process iirc
Thanks for the info.
Is there a reason for using 10Gbe for Management traffic? I would imagine you'd use 1GBe for Management, and 10Gbe for VM and Storage traffic?
hi, followed your tutorial...installed proxmox...all went well, i think...
i am stuck at pve login....how should i login or how how should i move to web ui..
i am just unable to do anything...would appreciate your help...thanks..
I realize this is an older video, but where are the promised links in the show notes?
Hello thanks for all the videos been surfing your channeling while learning linux and building a homelab. Would you say this is still relevant?
Thanks.
Thanks for the video
Thanks a lot for these tutorials. About what you said about not making Proxmox publicly available if we can help it. What about exposing a VM with Apache that is running in Proxmox? Do you have any tutorial or something about securing that as much as possible? Thanks again
If I take away nothing else from this video, I'll always remember "velociraptors can open doors".
when i type my ip address:8006 it doesnt work and cant access the console, could you help on what to do (i tried adding exceptions to my windows firewall but nothing)
Good video
In the initial setup is that set in stone as i know a few things like network interface will change later on down the track, will i have to reinstal or will this be ok and configurable after?
thank you so much!
Hi Jay, I have Dell poweredge r630 with 100GB ram.Whilst installing proxmox I was advised it does not support zfs on raid controller hardware..I prefer zfs for its reliability. Have you had any experience installing it on similar hardware and choosing zfs a the file system?..thank you for the series
I want to learn how to use proxmox so that I can run windows and mac os on my desktop computer. Not a server. Will I be able to learn how to do that through this series?
hi, do you have a video of installing Montrey or Big sur via Proxmox.....
Firefox i saw thanks a lot for the videos jay
How do you secure your proxmox VE ? I usually disable root logins at least for openssh enable only public key authentication. However I'm a noob when it comes to linux therefore I would like to know what would you recommend or what do you do on your Proxmox VE after installation for improving security ?
I love linode i'm running 2 backup windows 10 VPS's, as a backup option for all my important files. Windows is not natively supported by linode but linode has a guide on how to setup windows on there platform.
would it be smarter to enable ZFS during the proxmox install, or in TrueNAS when you actually create your NAS?
Does it make sense with a Raspberry Pi 5 and need one or more for a cluster
Is there any way during installation to run the Proxmox web interface on the server itself without the use of a separate computer? I hate having to pull oneself up by one's own bootstraps!
i used rufus for usb bootable creation. also works well, and has more options than this.
I have 8 4tb hard drive and a small SSD , should I install proxmox in the SSD or the hard drives? I am planning to install truenass on top.
nice one !
Very nice series: I ask advice to more advanced user than me, is it true that for a proxmox use is raccomended a data center class disk? I'm planning to install proxmox on a Lenovo p340 tiny that has space only for 2 m2 ssd nvme and in many topics on proxmox forum I read that for the huge amount of writing on the disk made by proxmox a durable nvme is better, so for example I read about Micron 7300 pro m2 2280 nvme ssd but it costs half the price I payed the pc (a used but very recent pc). Thank you for any advice on this topic.
I have a question, I tried to make a container for hosting my web application to go live, and the only port is open is 80 and 443. So assuming that I access my web app from internet, will it be accessible since the port is open is 80? or I should do more configuration in proxmox to make my containers available on the internet? thanks!
Thanks for this series.... I have a Qnap Nas... Could I install this on a USB Nvme drive to boot the OS and use zfs with truenas??
So you´re supposed to use an "unused IP" but not told how and when you google it, only thing you´ll find talks about DHCP, whatever that is and some reddit posts who suggest to not even try if you don´t work in networking... How are you supposed to know that number then? Do we have to make one up? I don´t get it.
I'm totally new to Proxmox, using a newly built PC current only have 500gb .m2 + 2 ata hdd total 500+GB for storage, 32GB Ram 6 core. My is question do I partition all the storage 1st as LVM & Install Debian 11 Sever Base on LV1 & then Proxmox on a separate partition like LV2 ? I downloaded Proxmox-ve_ 8.0.2.iso
the one in your video is 7.0.1 or so I think, will I be able to follow along? Why am I thinking of installing Debian 11 instead of 12 because you mentioned Mastadon won't work on Debian 12 yet?
Does Proxmox have a GUI interface for people who just wants to install into their main desktop and swap between VM within the same machine?
Proxmox is a type 1 hypervisor, maybe you are looking for a type 2 hypervisor like virtual box.
@@ryanlea750 promox is a shell for KVM. KVM is a type 1 hypervisor.
13:40 too bad, those RAID options are what I am trying to find some good tutorials for.
Especially RAID1/5 and how Proxmox handles drive failurs / admin notification / drive replacemnet / array rebuild
There does not seem to be any good info on that - in case you need ideas for additional turorials. ;-)
Not sure that you WOULD use RAID on a Proxmox/Ceph cluster. You're probably further ahead to add a good SATA card if you want to add more disks and then let Proxmox handle it through Ceph.
Can i install onto windows 10 desktop? Or does this need to be on its own server?
I didi all this and every thing instaled proxmox got to the login part put root enter then tried password and it wont type the password .I then whent on my other computer got online to the new server to sign in like you did entered root then my password and it fails the sign in . Should I instal proxmox all over again.
Hi Jay I was just wondering if you have done a video on how to migrate to Proxmox from VMware? Is that even possible? I thought there might be some others like myself wanting to migrate from vmware esxi to proxmox ve?
I just can't get it working... The servers are in the server vlan, the config is just like the docu mentions it, but the interfaces show UP instead of LOWER_UP.. That's so sad, that this was beyond the scope of the video :(
If you only have 1 hard drive, should we still use ZFS?
I encountered a problem during installation when selecting ext4
Detected existing 'pve' Volume Group(s)! Do You want to : rename VG Backed by PV '/dev/sdb1,[unknown],[unknown]' to 'pve-OLD-060AAB7C
or cancel the installation?
Hiii first thanks a lot for all your videos and guide, I just use hypervisor type 2 in the past and I was curios to know if is possible access the host server on the same machine, I mean in your video you use a browser to access the server from a different pc, is that something you must do the first time or is the only way to access the server? I'm sure this must be silly question but I don't know a lot that's why....thanks in advance for you help
I am new to the proxmox world recently, and as far as I can tell, most of what you can do will be easier from the gui, but you should still be able to use the CLI (if you know the commands and syntax) for doing things from the same box on which proxmox is installed. If I am incorrect in this and some one corrects me, thanks.
Thanks ever so much, for making an update series about Proxmox. I have been running it on brick PC for about 3 years now. I am in the process of building a new system as I have hit limits to what I can do on my current system (unable to increase the RAM). I am using the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X and having 64GB to start with. Would be nice to use ZFS, but to have it use 16GB of RAM, na. I will have 6 VMs that will be running all the time, 5 are linux style OS and the other is Home Assistant. I will have 3 more ubuntu/debain VM along with 2 windows VM that will be spun up as needed. What would you recommend for storage size for the VMs that I have listed? Thanks.
This is great - and I was following along, until I booted from the PROXMOX installation media. I get the Install screen, but the whole right-side is gone. I have a 27" wide monitor attached (via VGA - the install box does not have DVI or HDMI or even DP). I cannot get to the right-hand side to see the buttons. How do I get it to fit? Even putting the monitor in 'normal' mode (with black bands down the sides) and rebooting -- I cannot see to do the install.
check the mobo or system board for your machine you are installing on, PROXMOX DOES require that the mobo is UEFI compliant to be able to be installed, if your systems motherboard 's bios is not /does not have or support UEFI, you will not be able to install proxmox. I had similar problem trying to install proxmox onto an older HP PROLIANT DL 580 G5 server, bios was not or did not have uefi support. hope this helps
can we install proxmox on a server instead of physical device?
What is your take on installing Proxmox on a USB SSD key? I have limited SATA ports and currently have all SATA ports tied up for internal storage.
NEED HELP
I don't hv ethernet network connection to connect webUI, but my motherboard has inbuilt wifi adaptor.
Anyway to connect to webUI through this wifi to configure VM?
no, unfortunately, proxmox DOES (currently, as of 09/2024), still requires a physical lan connection.
For production do you use just a single nvme?
I personally wouldn't. Instead have boot device and another for storing the vertul machines and other proxmox files.
You should also consider where you 're going to put the backups and how you will be restoring things after losing data.
So how would I set my IP if I eventually want to set up routing on my Proxmox server?
Hi mate, I have a question and was hoping you could help me. In the installation process, the storage part, there are options for ext4. Max foot, maxvz, hdsize, swapsize. What do these options do? When I select defaults and the system boots up there is only 8gb on the root partition for proxmox updates etc. Could you explain how these options work? I’ve read the proxmox docs but I didn’t understand it
Hi, Jay. While trying to install Proxmox in a external ssd through my Windows 10 PC, I selected the option zfs Raid 0 instead of Ext 4. Now it happens that it cannot boot from my windows pc system, Instead it keeps booting as Proxmox. Would that mean that it erased the internal ssd? Is there any way to fix it? I’ll appreciate your support.
check your bios, make sure that the INTERNAL SSD/HDD is the 1st boot device and not the EXTERNAL SSD. That would be my 1st step. if that is ok, then it maybe that during install phase, you selected the wrong drive to setup zfx raid. also, I am not sure if you can install proxmox on an external drive, as it requires acess to the mobo hardware to (and it has to be UEFI Capable), as it is it's own OS type 1 hypervisor...just a guess here..
Sir, i success installation on my computer (asus h81mk i3 gen4 for Lab PC trial) but after installation.. proxmox cannot show display on the monitor.. bios setting (uefi and csm 'other os').. anyone can help me please...
Can I Install the Proxmox on Virtual bix virtual machine?
🛑 Mr. T says never make fun of a person's name. Your mother gave you that name. Or you made it up for business purposes. *Either way it's personal* 🌠 (Ref: 10:19)
which browser are u using?
My ip adres corresponds to a local ip adres something like 192.168... Why? I did something wrong there?
ohh well, ive decided to make additional proxmox instalation in different place.
I just dont like to seat and watch when i can make somethig and have some exp from it.
Cool
one quick question, why is it better to use proxmox instead of using hyper-v in windows since its natively supported ?
There are many reasons you would choose one over the other. First three that come to mind why Proxmox are: Containers , Ceph Clustering, Better Performance. Bonus answer: More features and functionality
Grazie!
Why do most RUclipsrs talk about zfs with proxmox? I dont see them talking about ceph..I use ceph on my proxmox and I would really like to see some more content talking about ceph.
Heck, I'd like to know more about what CEPH actually _is,_ what it's used for, and only _then_ compare it to ZFS...
