I agree! 😂 I just found her and already feel better about the clothes I don't even wear. I'm like "hey clothes, let's get together sometime and work something out!" 😅
Good tips! One thing I do is arrange my tops in the closet by color and sleeve length. I find if I mix short sleeve and sleeveless things in with long sleeve things they tend to get lost or overlooked. By hanging like sleeve lengths together they’re easier to find.
And this is why Alyssa is, and will remain, the very best and most consistent expert on YT. The truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth! Thank you so much ❤ from Australia 🇦🇺
Love the tip about not separating clothes into “work” and “leisure “, etc. Totally guilty of that and your video helped me see how I can change that pattern!
🤔 My categories are tripping me up. For the majority of my life, I separated my wardrobe into Public & Private sphere like some Victorian Miss. My classic corporate co-ords & suits were segregated bcos of their extreme elegance & formality. They possess a slightly more modern, masculine, & powerful bent. My favored palette is more neutral. Special occasion & "date" dressing (day & night activities with my beau or gal-pals) also roll-up here. My private realm includes home, hearth, & church activities. This is where I feel 💯% more free to indulge my ultra feminine, casual, & sporty side. Risk slightly more pops of color in this arena. Indulge myself in few florals & flounces as the mood strikes. Since I'm no longer working in an office 9-to-5, I'm slowly starting to mix in a touch of rebellion & comfort to make my formal gear feel more conducive with my more casual lifestyle. My classic clothes need a sense of low key glamour, rock-n-roll, or sport to work right for me outside those narrow confines. Otherwise, they strike me as feeling rather fussy, stifling, & staid. 💚Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)
I'm definitely guilty of buying multiple colours (and I always favour one), keeping things that don't fit me in my wardrobe, and categorising items for work only. This was helpful, thank you.
MY FAVOURITE TOPIC YOU’VE DISCUSSED SO FAR 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Super guilty from most of these - especially the “buying things in multiple colours” and I totally agree that the change in silhouette is pretty much what I have been looking for all along…
I have been watching other fashion content creators to get inspiration and a little more guidance on how to get the most use out of my closet. I have to say of all of them, I resonate most with your style. I love how you explain the elements that make or don’t make an outfit work, and I appreciate how you don’t highlight the pieces you wear, but more how they make you feel and what they do for you. Thank you, Alyssa. I find your channel so refreshing and helpful.
🙋♀ Guilty of "saving for special occasions" and "categorizing"! 🤦♀️Thank you, this video was REALLY very helpful and made me reflect on how I should organize my wardrobe. PS - There is one category, however, that I simply cannot mix with the rest, and that is gym clothes. As most Europeans (Portuguese here), you will not find me wearing leggings or sweat pants on the street unless I am on my way to the gym, so I would not combine those pieces with any other clothes. xxx
The tip that resonates the most with me is not taking the tags off in a timely manner. It is a true sign that I’m not really into that purchase and I should return it! Thanks for all your tips!
I buy same things in multiple colors because I have a devil of a time finding long-sleeve blouses that actually fit my arms. Yes, I have big upper arms. When I find THE one, you bet I will buy more than one. And, on the miraculous day that I actually find a nice blazer or denim jacket that will actually fit my arms, I might do the same.
Thank you, as always, for sharing your tips. I have multiple dresses, for example, in the same cut but different colors. However, I find it extremely helpful. Currently, I live in a tropical environment, and having multiples in different colors makes it easier for me to get dressed in the morning. I allow the color to be the variant or create the desired style vibe. For example, if I want to be "serious" and accomplish tasks, I will wear the black dress. In addition, I wear the copper dress in the fall or if I have a Zoom meeting and want to stand out. I could also do that with different silhouettes or slight tweaks to the neckline, as you mentioned. However, I also like buying what works for me. Thank you, again, for giving your audience such great and helpful tips.
This was a really helpful thing to listen to and gently face what I might otherwise judge as bad habits. Instead I’m firmly seeing behaviors and instead judging them (or judging myself) I’m seeing an encouraging moment to evolve. For that, thank you. ❤
I have way too many clothes and am guilty of buying the same item over and over and tags still on several items. It’s chaos and hard to concentrate and be creative. For now, I have a separate section in my closet that I work out of and it helps. New plan: look at 5 items each day and assess if they are working for me. If not, it goes into the giveaway box.
On the flip side, I find myself shopping less, and even when browsing, I ask, "Do I have anything similar at home?" Many times the answer is yes, so it's easy to walk away from the item.
I really like this idea, thank you. I have WAY too much stuff and it's overwhelming to try and go through everything at once. Which means I never finish the project. I like just a limited number of times or minutes every day and accept it's a long term project and every step is getting me closer to where I would like to be,
I just love the way that you come from a place of using all of our wardrobe and working with what we already have. You don't suggest we go out and buy MORE items, which has been my downfall for a long time. The ideas that you have mentioned here are very helpful, and ones I would never have thought about, so thank you 🌺🏵🌸
I was thinking that most of these habits do not apply to me until you got to the part about hanging our clothes in sections such as work pants! I love the idea of putting all of the pants together, all of the sweaters together, etc. instead of breaking it up into lifestyle sections. I can’t wait to try it!
Wow, what you said about stuffing clothes into rigid categories really resonates with me. I have four cats and I'm a bit worn out from constantly de-furring nice things - so I do have a small "house clothes" set - e.g., the jeans/shirts that don't seem to hang onto fur as badly or roll out quickly and easily. I'm not sure I have it in me to open up my "nice" pieces to my home clothes collection. That said, I've no excuse for not re-imagining those pieces for my social life. I feel like I"m meeting you halfway there on this one Alyssa!
Can you make a video about caring for your clothes/ how to treat them so they last longest and stay looking new? That’d be awesome. Particularly white clothes are my struggle! But I love them
I get the best ideas on how to combine my clothes when I hang them up on a clothes rack, mostly after ironing. Suddenly I see what goes together really well, and I would've never come up with that combination. Great video, love your approach!
You have helped me and continue to teach me so much that has helped me identify my styles (3 words), get excited about using what I have, eliminating clutter, ability to express myself more clearly, and a lot more time and less frustration. I just love you and your amazing personality and the fact that you have incredible values!!!
Brilliant ideas. I have started to try doing these things . But have thrown(given to op shops) some things that I wish I had kept stored. I will try to remember in the future 😊😊
Thanks Alyssa❤. I watch a lot (too many) fashion vlogs but haven't come across tip 1 before. It certainly explains why I have so many coloured linen shirts in the same style but generally only reach for the same two based on colour preference. And tip 2 reminded me immediately of Karen Britchick who is a genius at mixing casual with luxe.
I love the suggestion about how to put things with tags still on them on a separate rack for about a week to help you decide. One problem that I have also is that I have to wear things sometimes before I realize that they just don't work for me. I may like the look but wearing helps me to know the comfort level is just not there or after washing or cleaning things I am not as pleased with how they hold up. I often feel I waste money because of this. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Good topic. All rules are true but for me you are so right about categories! Watching your previous videos I eliminated them in my closed and creativity appears immediately. Thanks!!
Totally agree about the occasion clothes....people do it with perfume...I think a lot of it is the keep it for best ethos because it could be an expensive item. I wear everything now otherwise my expensive items cost more per wear...and perfume goes stale...it doesn't last forever...enjoy❤❤❤
Amazing tips! 👍 I recently discovered your channel and admit I have been "binging". 😂 I am seeing my "collection" through new eyes. I just pulled my Burberry short trench out of the back of the closet (it has a classic but not stuffy cut) and getting so many compliments on it. 😊
The idea for new items that do not quite work or don’t feel right is a good one. It works for me. Because then I am looking at the item, maybe trying it on again and giving myself time for that final return decision.
Tjis is soo good advice! Classic not trendy cloths that don’t fit, just put them away and once every season you can go thrue your storage of that season’s cloths. That can really be shop your own, but instead of closet, your storage! I have used this metod on lots of my cloths over the last 30 years or so. Only regnet is the things I let go of that were really expensive to buy again or could’t find similar when I wanted it back!
Thanks for the great advice! When working with the 3 style words it's easier to see how my clothes transition between the facets of my lifestyle. I get so much more wear out of fewer items and that's very satisfying.
I have 30 days to return items. And I do return 9 out of 10. The trick is to see the new purchase daily. The conscious level increases the level of scrutiny. I definitely returned absolutely perfect items with fantastic sales price simply because they didn’t fit my wardrobe, lifestyle, or too fantasy-ish.
Maybe it would help you in the future to research what happens to a large portion of returned clothing items to buy more selective in the first place. Unfortunately, a lot of it ends up in landfills.
@@suann9790 i buy from tjmaxx and marshalls on line exclusively so that I can return to stores. Physical stores don’t discard returned items. The clerks where I make returns (they all know me) told me my returns usually got bought the same day they were put on shelf. I have eyes for good clothes, shoes, and accessories.
@@33Jenesis Oh that's good, not having the waste dilemma of returns on top of the personal decision! I try to be really mindful about my purchases and I want to keep only what I really love, but learning about the horrendous practices of fashion companies also stops me from ordering a selection of items that is meant to be returned at least partly. For now, my personal solution is to avoid online shopping if possible. Trying clothes on in a physical store and going to thrift stores works quite well for me at the moment.
@@suann9790 there are many on line retailers. I made a conscious decision NOT to buy from them except the 2 I mentioned for limited merchandise selection and stores close by. The store clerks asked me why I only came in to turn; this was what I told them. Their stores offer too many choices that exhaust me. I also can’t shrift shop because I always, always find exceptional items that I couldn’t let go. I have to make a choice where I spend my retail money so I made restrictions. Now I tend to buy expensive items but a lot fewer items than before. I’d rather have real diamond on 14k gold than gold plated silver. I buy one coat, not 5 different coats.
@@33Jenesis I totally agree on the quality over quantity approach and only buying what is really beneficial to you. When I read your first comment I thought you would just send back a lot of stuff, but I'm really happy to understand that you found your way of choosing wisely without partaking in the typical return problem.
Super helpful! Loved the tips for people with weight fluctuations. Great insight on multiples. I hadn't considered that having more than one of the same item could make it a little boring with both/all of them. Thank you!
Wow!!! I just had a lightbulb moment!!! I am a categorizer and you just made me understand why it never works for me. Thank you!!!! 😊 I’m currently on a wardrobe declutter mission and this is gonna be a game changer for me I feel like.
Loved this. I currently have 1 dress that has tags on in my wardrobe. Just thought of another dress I had bought for me as a gift for Xmas.🤦🏻♀️ both are nagging at me mentally for not wearing them. Now the season is changing I’m unlikely to wear them. But, I think I will keep as they maybe a nice surprise for when autumn/winter rolls around again & it will feel like I’ve properly shopped my closet.😂🤦🏻♀️
Great ideas! A few years ago I bought too many leggings and drapey tunics. All of a sudden my wardrobe was out of date and it was hard to create different looks with those pieces.
I’m in the middle of a closet decluttering session because of crowded look and/or feel, and these are the questions I keep asking myself this time instead of the usual do I love it, or have I worn it lately or all those normal decluttering guidelines. This is great, especially the one that I just discovered: how to get the most use of your pieces in every occasion.
Just put away fall-winter and got out spring-summer. Having not seen those closed for a good six months made me excited to wear them again, and I feel like I had just been on a big shopping spree. But I hadn’t! I just shopped my closet! Definitely guilty of buying too much of the same vibe in different colors. This video helped me understand why I do t reach for those things as much!
Loved this video. I like your recommendation of just giving a week with items one is not sure of. I do try these items on several times before I make my decision. When I do finally decide on keeping an item I say "Welcome to my wardrobe!"
Today's topic was a home run for me! Everything you shared makes so much sense. Some things I already do i.e. skirts, jeans, pants, dresses kept together in their perspective group so I appreciate the affirmation that I am on the right track. One big issue for me is buying items, leaving the tags on and DISCOVERING them way after a return is possible. Thank you for the great suggestions. This is one of my favs.
Guilty…6 shirts in the same exact silhouette 😂😂😂 one just wore out and I tossed it. I have them for work and in different colors mostly because they are affordable & durable cotton shirts. I decided to make sure I purchase various silhouettes and I started with my white tops. I now have 4 different white tops…🤭 it’s taken some time for my to get all of these principles applied to my wardrobe. I think I was sticking to what felt safe. 😊
The multiples!!! I never actually thought about them creating chaos in my closet, but upon reflection…I think you are on to something. I am notorious for finding something that I like and fits well….and then getting several in differing colors/patterns. You are correct, in that I tend to only wear ONE that is my favorite. Thank you for discerning this, as it may help me cull out things that just hang there and make me feel less creative about dressing.
great video as usual. you obviously are peeking in my closet. lol. however, slowly but surely i am getting rid of things that are NOT my three words anymore and gifting them to people who will use them. much younger people....lol.
Your videos are always so helpful to me. I also appreciate the style of your videos. No pun intended. I find listening to you explain the concepts in detail without too much distracting music and effects, helps me to learn from your videos a lot better. Thank you!
I rarely buy clothes in store, so if I receive an online purchase I try it on straightaway. I always know immediately if it’s right for me and my wardrobe. If it’s not, I pack it up and take it back to the courier that day! Doing this prevents that item from languishing in my wardrobe, unworn and, possibly later, un- returnable.
Definitely me! Guilty of all but the multiple thing especially. I am getting ready to do a major closet clean out of all the stuff that doesn't fit or I never wear or have too many of.
Hi Alyssa, I'm a new subscriber and am loving your content as I discover my personal style. I've lost 60 lbs on my health journey and have been celebrating by investing in a new wardrobe. I recently bought a cropped oversized shirt which I love but am having a bear styling. I'm petite with a longish torso, the shirt hits at my waist but it's ballooning. Before exchanging or returning it, I thought I'd turn to you and see if you have any ideas/tips for me to try? Thanks so much, I love your energy and your advice is helping me fall in love with fashion and style and is boosting my self esteem incredibly! Thank you!
I love a black turtleneck. Have my whole life. Needed a new one, thought I'll get my refresher black. I'm trying to expand to navy, ok I'll get navy. And red, sure let's try something new. I hate that effin red turtleneck lol
So very guilty of habits 1-4. How did I not realize it until now?! Thanks so much for this video! It’s comforting to know that these are actually common mistakes… Learning so much from your channel. Thanks!
Buying multiples is an issue I have. And while, yes, all those turtlenecks do look great and are my perfect style I get so bored. I feel like I look the same every day and I don't like that. Once I have one great black turtleneck and don't need 10 more that fulfill the same need. I end up only really loving 1 or 2 anyway and don't wear the rest. Same with color. Sometimes it just isn't different enough, when everything else is the same about it, to make me want to wear it. I like how you explained it and now I don't feel like it's wrong that this doesn't work for me. 🙃
just discovered the channel and I am loving it!💓 I've been trying to get rid of clothes that do not fit and in which I do not feel comfortable anymore. Have the bag already packed. Now it is just the way to the donation institution. Hey, I have my clothes sorted out by color. How abou that?
I give myself time to think about returning items, but I write the last possible date for return in my calendar. BUT i just realised that it might be a bad sign if I even consider returning an item than just wear it right away. Thank you, Alyssa!
Guilty! Guilty! Guilty as charged! Thanks - love this topic and your approaches. Taking family to Cirque de Soleil this afternoon for their birthdays. Inspired to pair something 'special' with something very 'everyday' 😊
I buy in multiples only basics like tank tops or tees especially because I use a variety of silhouettes in topper pieces. I may be guilty of doing it with a few pants but have a 3 only rule there… Really Great tips in this video, actually one of my favorite videos!
I just recently started following you and love your channel! Is there a video where you talk more in depth about choosing your 3 words? I feel like this could help me. Thanks!
Awesome tips Alyssa! Just want to say - I’ve been watching your videos for about six months or so now, and you are the main reason that my style game has improved! Thanks so much for the very helpful content! 😊❤
Loving this video. Side note, you would look amazing with a bob haircut holy smokes! When your hair was tucked into your turtleneck wuff! Foxy lady hehe
Oh and I am feeling wery overwhelmed by my closet with the in-between weather I haven't packed all my winter things up yet and it's just ...so many clothes. I wanna burn it down lol
Guilty of having for a long time separated my clothes in 2 categories: "for work" and "off work". But when I retired I did not want to get rid of all of them (especially the pants) so I put them with my other clothes! I am still guilty of keeping one pair of dressy pants for special occasion as I cannot stop thinking: "if it is stained or dirty, what will I wear?". The reality is: I don't have many occasions that need to be dressy. Actually none at all for the last few years! The dress codes have changed and allow more of the casual chic look for most occasions. I went to the opera Garnier in Paris for the first time this year (very fancy place!) and still you could see jeans to evening attire being worn!!!
Thanks for the great tips! If you don’t have room for a “viewing rack”, I use “over the door hooks” to gaze at my new purchases and to set out my next day outfits. I try on new purchases when I receive them and see if they go with my existing closet pieces (sometimes “on my body” differs from my “in my head” analysis). I send back what won’t work ASAP. I try to wear new pieces as soon as I can to get my “Cost Per Wear” started. It eases my guilt of buying new garments, even though my buying has decreased to a few statement pieces, twice a year (Fall/ Winter and Spring/Summer) for styles I know fit my aesthetics. I try to buy end of season sales to fill in needed basic pieces and replace worn out “tried and true” .
Alyssa - the clothes whisperer.

#2 making regular use from specialty items. Too true! Excellent as always. Xo joanne
Super helpful! Loved the tips for people with weight fluctuations. Great insight on multiples. I hadn't considered that having more than one of the same item could make it a little boring with both/all of them. Thank you!
Great video. I totally agree about storing certain items if your weight fluctuates in a fairly predictable way.
Such good nonjudgmental language. Thanks for shining
I loooooove this white shirt you're wearing, it's perfect.
Great video! LOVE those large hoop earrings on you😍
Your hair is so beautiful! when you turned I literally gasped I was like omg her hair is so long!
😮 i am guilty of the categorizing habit - makes so much more sense what you are proposing 😊
Excellent advice on body weight changes and only keeping high quality classic pieces and setting them aside!👍
Same here
So good! Because of your channel, I have less clutter in my closet. My drawers are a different story😮
Loved this video. I like your recommendation of just giving a week with items one is not sure of. I do try these items on several times before I make my decision. When I do finally decide on keeping an item I say "Welcome to my wardrobe!"
Another learning and I'm gaining so much confidence I'm excited about my wardrobe.
Great segment. Brain reset 🎉Saving this for periodic mental refresh !
Thank you!
So many great tips! 😊
Also, wow, you have such beautiful eyes!! 😍 they sparkle ✨️💛
Great I need to embrace all of these tips!!
You continue to bring a fresh and elevated approach to styling…and you make it so fun in the process.
Excellent points! I cull my closet fairly often, and yet there is probably still more I could do to neaten up the space. Thanks for these suggestions!
Great advise!!! Thanks for the video😊😊
This was so timely. With change in seasons I have been evaluating some items that I haven’t worn in a long time, or that I love but don’t fit.
Definitely me! Guilty of all but the multiple thing especially. I am getting ready to do a major closet clean out of all the stuff that doesn't fit or I never wear or have too many of.
Great tips, as usual!❤
This was great, I’m guilty of categorizing! 🤯
super helpful. Thanks Alyssa.
Thank you!
This was insightful. I must say the 'elements of style' was a game changer for me. Why I have stuck with you all these years.
I love the white v-neck top you're wearing in this video. Do you mind sharing a link to it?
Loved the not categorising clothes, as this is something I tend to do, definitely food for thought!
just discovered the channel and I am loving it!💓 I've been trying to get rid of clothes that do not fit and in which I do not feel comfortable anymore.
Thx for all your great tips. I'm guilty for all of them😅. Till next time....See ya😊
Excellent video and super helpful tips 👍👍
Yup do alllllll of these!😅😅
Great advice!
Such GREAT and PRACTICAL advice! Love, love this video ❤❤❤. Thanks so much Alyssa for your wisdom
Excellent! You have an excellent way of communicating ideas in such a simple constructive way. Thank you.
For chaotic habit #1, I buy multiple black blazers but they are all a slightly different cut/silhouette.
Fabulous video
Wow!! Really nice advice. My favorite video😘. Thank u!!!
Such a great video. ❤
I buy in multiples only basics like tank tops or tees especially because I use a variety of silhouettes in topper pieces. I may be guilty of doing it with a few pants but have a 3 only rule there… Really Great tips in this video, actually one of my favorite videos!
Super helpful, as always! Thanks for being a highlight of the weekend 💛
Awesome tips ...as usual! Thank you for sharing.
I just recently started following you and love your channel! Is there a video where you talk more in depth about choosing your 3 words? I feel like this could help me. Thanks!
Alyssa this is so helpful!!! I’m actually doing some closet organizing this week so this video came right when I needed it! Thank you! 🤍
Great tips Alyssa! Always enjoy watching your videos with your smile and personal style.
Really good!❤
Awesome tips and right on. I am always thankful ❤❤
I wear my fancy dresses with long cardigans. It always looks like I tried when I really did not .
Always super helpful Alyssa. I enjoy your videos and look forward to upncoming ones.
