Former Boy Scout here, and I can tell you with 100% certainty that one of the main reasons why boys dropped out of our troop was because there weren't any girls.
really? When I was a little girl I wanted so badly to be a Boy Scout and though my parents pointed out the Girl Scouts, I didn’t want to be part of them. The Boy Scouts were cooler and more respected. But of course I was told I could never be a Boy Scout cause I was a girl. 😢 I’m glad todays girls can be part of it

Good! When I was a Girl Scout decades ago I wish I had the option to join the Boy Scouts because they did fun stuff like making fires, whittling, how to use a compass if lost and learning which plants can be foraged. My Girl Scout troop earned badges by baking, cooking a meal and sewing! Good skills to have but the best Scouting troop in my opinion would teach home skills and outdoor skills. Boys should learn to cook and girls should know how to whittle!
Same here. I looked at my brother's Boy Scout handbook with envy, comparing it to my Girl Scout handbook. I was jealous.

The pastor told me it was not an appropriate question.
I would not let it go.
I was told I was being disruptive and had to wait in the parking lot for my mom to come to pick me up.
Why wasn’t my mom at church?
Because she allowed me to attend many different houses of god with friends and other family members so I could make up my own mind.
That did it for me.
I remember thinking, I’m in the 6th grade, I have serious questions and since you can’t answer them…you can go F yourself.
I also learned to cuss from mama.
She said, only when it’s the last resort😂.
Your mama not only did good teaching you to think for yourself, and exposing you to different types of churches, but she clearly taught you how to cuss properly and really well, lol.😄😄😄

I was in the Girl Scouts in the 70’s and my mom was a troop leader for awhile. I can still remember the camp fire songs and doing community service. What happened to the Boy Scouts is so very despicable, but joining them seems like a great idea so the boys can be involved again. And maybe do background checks on leaders?

The BSA had loads of women, who were pack and troop leaders, and now they're allowing our daughters into the program. Scouting America is a much more inclusive name. I was trained as a Scoutmaster, Quartermaster, and Unit Commissioner and acted as leader in two summer camps and I'm a woman. I can tell you that without women, the BSA would have disappeared long ago.
I remember in the 70’s going to the YMCA. It was scandalous lol but the YWCA had no children’s programs or membership. I also joins Indian Guides, sorry it was the 70’s, but just let everyone in the game. We all want to play

Through our differences we learn more and are stronger as a country because of it.
And scouting was an excellent opportunity to be exposed to folks of different backgrounds. It was for me from my middle class, Wonder bread, lily white background. Met girls from the trailer parks. Was in the tents when the Black girls did their hair. Heard about Mexican cooking. Learned about growing up on a reservation. Would never have been exposed to such backgrounds any other way.

There have ALWAYS been girls in the boyscouts. When I was in it in the 90s it was basically a regional decision whether girls could be admitted as members or not, but even in places where they were not like where I was from in the rural south, there were still girls who would show up and do all the activities anyway, and when I went to the national jambori or whatever it's called.. I was amazed how many girls there were. And no one cared. Funny that, aint it? If there's a girl who's perceived as being 'boyish' or interested in what are considered 'boy things', that ain't so much of a problem for a lot of these people-- but the other way 'round and it's considered the very worst and most shameful thing in the world. Now what does that tell you about how they think of men and women, in relative terms?

If a more inclusive social group helps young people get one on one social skills then I'm for it.
So many kids are not getting the social skills they need in todays world of cell phones and social media.
When I was a little girl I wanted to be a Boy Scout. It looked so much cooler than being a Girl Scout. But I was told I could never be one. I’m so glad future girls can take part ❤

My daughter goes to every scout meeting with her 9 year old son and is involved in all the activities that they do as a group, including campouts, field trips and benevolent activities. Guess what, there are girls with their dads in their troop too! The parents and their children have the freedom to participate as a team of equals enjoying life and everything it has to offer. If that is being “woke”, so be it!

I enjoyed your story regarding being asked to leave Sunday School as a child because of asking questions. As an adult I was searching for a place to understand the Bible, I joined a woman’s study group - I had a lot of questions, after a few study meetings, I was taken aside by the study group leader and she suggested that I might want to find another church as I was asking to many questions. When I asked her how else does a person learn - her comment was “you ask to many questions.” My take away - I was just supposed to show up and believe what I was hearing, and not be curious as to why 👀. Thank you for making my day with your story regarding “religious teachings.”

At the ripe old age of 5 I got kicked out for telling the teacher that owning people was not right. It’s in the old testament somewhere that it’s okay to own someone. I am 69 and I can still remember this . I don’t think much of religion in any shape or form. It’s based on old very old way of life . Cannot claim they is no god but I have a very hard time believing in one .

My mother was asked to take me out of Bible studies, which was basically a "give parishioners a break from the youngest kids" while Sunday church was in session. I asked too many questions. I had already had sex ed and this woman in Bible studies was telling us women are being punished for the whole apple thing that's why women have "periods". 😮 So i asked why then are cows, dogs, and horses punished too then? That was the last straw.

I'm a lifelong Dem. but, I break ranks on the scouts issue. I was in scouting from age 9 to probably 16 or so. I think the scouts needs to be a place free of girls to let boys be boys and learn things that typically don't interest girls. The Girl Scouts exist too.
