  • Welcome to I.E. Euros.
    Hi, I am Francisco.
We are a group of vehicle enthusiasts looking for Car meets, car shows, drag racing, roll racing, New cars, etc,..
these are the steps on how to replace the rear air shock absorbers on a BMW F01 F02. this process can vary depending on the options of the BMW.
it is recommended to replace the air compressor at the same time when you replace the air shock absorbers.
the problem with BMW was that over night it go low because the air shock were leaking air causing this problem very noticeable.
this process is going to be similar for BMWs 750i 750Li 550i 650i X5 X6
    wiring problem
    low fuel pressure
    injector failure
    sensor failure
    timing incorrect
    defective or broken engine
    bad shifting solenoids
    low transmissions oil pressure
    transmission oil leaks
    transmission sensor problems

If both sides develop the sagging at the same time, it could be the pump or the diverter. If it is one side only, it will be after the diverter. Always check for leak at the diverter and brass connections, and also the tubing. Replacing the struts is always the last thing to do and there are aftermarket struts (without those sensors) for a lot cheaper.
So, $100 if u have to replace the tubings and connections, and $500 at most to replace the struts. Don't spend thousands. It make no sense to spend 25% (more or less) of the value of the car to repair just the suspensions.

Secure the three bolts inside the car first before installing the big bolt at the bottom of the shock absorber to make you life easier.

On mine, when I put the new air nipple on the air line I left the tip of the line a little long and when I screwed it into the pressure valve on the strut, it wasn't letting the air in the bag. Even with 130 psi. It drove me nuts. All I had to do is cut the tip of the air line a little shorter in front of the brass nipple and it filled up. Then just had to calibrate the ride height and it worked. I almost replaced the compressor but I didn't have to.

One warning and comment. before you jack up the car, take the nuts off the shock towers, and when you lossesn them all the way, 1. You have to use a magnet if you want to take the nuts off the shock towers and keep them. I tried without, lost two of them inside the car, had to get new ones at the dealer.
Do not jack up the car with the nuts loose, or they will fall off and inside the metal, you will never get them out or back. I had to go to the dealer to get 2 of them because of this.
YOU HAVE to use a magnet to pick them up, and put them on, just like he does in the video.
As for the 21mm bolt, on the shock bottom, i used a Dewalt 20V 250lb impact, and it would not do anything, i had to use a 21mm wrench and a hammer to get to break loose, so be ready to deal with it, unless you have an air impact, with more than 250lbs of torque you are in for a lesson. He is right that you have to remove the brakes to get the shocks out, i removed the two bolts holding the entire caliper assembly together, it was easier to take off them take the brakes all apart.
Overall that's pretty much it, when you have the fenderliners off, you might as well spare and clean out the underside, cause there is always grease and road stuff on here, i even replaced my fender liners cause they were 11 years old and dried out.
For those that do not want to run BMW Air shocks as replacements, you can buy rebuild kits on eBay for like 300 bucks for the pair, its not too hard to do, there is a youtube video in how to rebuild them, its a 2 person job but will save you a fortune vs. replacing the entire units.
Or you can buy Chinese shocks, swap them, but the rebuild kits, and sell the BMW hardware valved units on ebay for your money back and some, you probably would break almost even if you do it right.
LAST WARNING - when you replace your shocks you have to get to a ISTA+ programmer to reset your coding and ride height to the car, if you do not do this you will get a EDC error on your dash and your car will ride like it has no suspension on it. I also learned this hard lesson by having to take it to the dealer to get reset and fixed. This is something that they do not tell you in the video either.
There are coders online that can do this remotely, but in my case, my software needed updating so it had to go back to the dealer.

I'm going through this exact thing now on my 2009 750li. The compressor replacement cost $2400, and the air shock replacement is $5600. The dealer replaced the compressor today then discovered the shocks weren't holding air.

You don’t mention any of that in your video but the whole unit is too pricey. I’ve seen a few places selling just the bags.

Question. one of my shocks is loosing air I start the car goes back up etc and it will hold air for a while... why do we have an air compressor for ? once the bags are inflated they are supposed to stay like that right ? or does the system actually drains them and then fills them back up ? based on each Comfort, sport mode etc ?

    • @moeleganem123
      @moeleganem123 2 года назад +2

Hard road bumps will cause a small leak which the compressor has to compensate, moreover, if the road had an incline the car will adapt the height accordingly by draining air from one side and them supplying again once car is level... What is unnatural is for a car to loose height when parked on level which engine is off,

Go to air suspension calibration using a compatible scan tool. Measure the distance between the rim edge and the wheel arch. Grab the measured number and add 20 mm more. Type that on the scanner and that is how it will go lower
