- In this video we diagnose a Bmw F11 5-series with an Airsuspension problem. The car came to my shop with both Air springs already replaced, but that did not Fix the car.
We diagnose and Fix the car, and of course have a little bit of fun!
Enjoy!

Hi Dan, I know it’s been five months since this video but we got a 2015 X5 (f15) in the shop today for low rear suspension. I knew it was coming in and watched you vid to become more knowledgeable. The vent vent on this car leaks down on random occasions. I’ve used the link in this message but can’t find a vent valve listed. ( or the desiccant refill) Hate to replace a working compressor and solenoid valve when they’re fine. Help! Doug
Doug Bolt hey having same issue, as are many with this(f15) platform. Did you ever get this sorted out?
Thanks for the great video, Wabco don't seem to supply this solenoid as a spare part. My part number was the same as yours 4420510211
God knows how much money this video saved me. BMW were asking £900 for full compressor assembly supply only, couldn't find anyone that supply the solenoid only, unable to release it, was able to purchase compressor assembly for £320, fitted myself fully working. Amazing videos, keep it up!!!!
Thats great Kevin!
I was surprised to find an aftermarket one for $120 for a Jaguar one.
Thank you very much
Start using mechanics not fitters.
FYI, for any of you DIY'ers, you can buy a new vent valve for $40 USD from AliExpress, that is really one the most common parts that fails on these new style Wabco pumps. The soft flexible membrane piston rings last much longer on these than the old plastic styles piston rings, so you don't really loose compression from the cylinder. And while that reed valve looked rusty, they still function just fine after a cleaning. Don't pay $650 USD for a new rebuilt pump, it's super easy to change the valve and dry out the desiccant . If you really need a full rebuild, do it yourself. All of the parts are available and there is not a lot to it. I have rebuilt over a dozen pumps for family and forum friends and takes 20 minutes max, mostly waiting around for the desiccant balls to dry out in the microwave.
I do understand why Dan replaced the pump though.
Ian Derzsi
Tx for sharing this. Most valuable comment I’ve ever read 😉
Thanks for that info Ian!
Ian Derzsi he mentioned he replaced it for warranty reasons...
@@speralta1 Ian specified DIYers, so he probably caught on to Dan's message.
Oops! Misread @Ian Derzi comment. I thought he wrote he DIDN’T understand why he replaced the pump. Apologies!
Dan, I can't believe the other shop didn't do the same checks you performed, it seems to be the next thing to check if no leaks are found duh! You are the man, never give up, and no car leaves your shop not fixed lol. Another great job well done.
Appreciate your time and attention to detail I learn always new things I am 71 years young and have been an fan of your show, thank you Dan.
Love how you going to detail step by step for every diagnosis every video is well detailed and epic The legend continues
You work very well under pressure Dan.
🤣🤣
But there was no pressure
Thanks Dan. You really make a lot of other mechanics look silly. Your the best!
awesome video, love when you get to the core source of the issues!
Thanks!
Very informative as always Dan, thanks for going through all the tests and showing the faulty part 👍
Your welcome!😊
TOP NOTCH STUFF DAN!! I was about to be disappointed when you just replaced the pump without tearing it apart....but then the BONUS FOOTAGE was gold!!! So at this rate you will have to replace the air pump every year?? WOW what a crappy design!!! Also the glove was brilliant xD xD xD
I love my gloves like you love your tape😉
I was about to make the same statement that Ivan would have rebuilt the pump at no cost with the stuff around his garage.
@@bbkmm1 🤣🤣👍
I spewed comments, semi hastily whilst watching ;)
even though I figured there was some resolve near the end (somewhat Ivan style) lol...... he didn't disappoint, but engineering stooges and bean counter driven cheapo-ism did. someone needs to go give them all LOTS of salt water to drink..............................................................
Great Dan, you surprise me again and again, you are the best teacher, clear and precise
Once again such brilliant teaching and step by step diagnosis. The perseverance, persistence along with a knowledge is something that is very unique to Dan. Excellent stuff!
Very informative. I like the additional footage you had pulling that compressor apart and going through the testing of it. Great job.
Thanks💪👍
Amazing illustration Mr : Dan , I enjoy every second in this video , You are great technician .. Greetings from middle east (Joradn ) . god bless you .
Thank you!
Love that glove test! Cracked me up.😁
Nice job finding the root cause of the failure to build pressure, too. Great video, Dan! 👍 👍
Thanks Smitty! 😊👍
Well done again, Dan,
as always, excellent job !
Thanks! 😊
Thank you so much you just saved me a ton of dallors on my 2017 X6. My compressor solenoid was stucked causing my rear end to sag.
Great diagnostic, and as usual, a great explanation! But it is sad that the other mechanic started by changing such expensive parts without any proper check
Well done as always, Dan.
Thanks!
Great topic Dan. I’ve never really touched air suspension but your video has given me enough insight to at least have a go and get started.
Thanks Russel!
Excelent fix Danny thank you for sharing! It was a nice detail to set the language in your scanner to english for this video. I'm about to get a whole box of those blue rubber special multi purpose tools you have! This video reminds me a similar problem I had with a Porsche cayenne Turbo, It was my first air suspension ever, I remember the front of the vehicle was really low so checking air suspension for leaks with some soap and water mix I found that the front left suspension was leaking air so I went ahead and replaced both front air suspension air bags (They sell it apart as one piece on ebay instead of the whole assembly) and also replaced the right side height sensor because the arm pivot was broken, after that for my surprise I could not raised the car with a bi-directional scannner command and also could not even heard the commpressor activating so I checked signals, activation relay and pressure and determined that the compressor need it to be replaced, I did and that fixed the problem, I remember the customer was very happy about the fix but asked me a very simple question I could not answer at that time... he asked me why the compressor failed at the same time the front left suspension failed? After further research I found out that when a air suspension is leaking (In this Porche) the ECU monitors the car height through the "height level sensor" and sends more air to that particular suspension to keep the car height leveled but by doing that the ECU keeps the compressor running more than usual, sometimes depending of the leak it can keep it running all the time and that actually overheat the compressor and eventually damage the unit.
So I learned that we need to check first the compressor unit and then also never forget to check for suspension, reservoir tank and air lines leaks in this systems.
Great story Argeny 👍
ford has been using the system for over twenty five years . i learned a long time ago about the finger check . great video dan . if you hooked up a amp clamp you would be able to see amp increase when the pump is rely working . like a fuel pump working when it is out of gas . keep posting your stuff i love it
Thanks for watching Randy!👍
Thank you Dan for a great laugh early in the morning
Your welcome Hans😊
I live the failure mode test that you did. I like that you show beyond a bad part by doing the actual diagnosis of the failed part.
On the e61 there was a common problem in that the pump air feed hose perished and allowed moisture and dirt to enter the pump, drastically shortening it's life. Worth checking as preventative maintenance.
Great advice that went with a bang, eventually!
I notice these pumps haven't changed much from the ones installed in Mercedes since 2000.
That's right this is a very basic system.
Learning and having fun at the same time
THANKS
Thanks Cesar 👍
100% gold diagnostic, mechanic, fun, subscribed. Congratulations!!
Thank you for new upload videos Dan. I mechanic that leaned a lot from you! THANK YOU!!!!! Oh.....Also Happy new years to you and your family Dan!!!
Thanks Shawn, the same to you and your family 😊
Always a pleasure to watch your videos Dan. I certainly see you have fun with them as well! You are one lucky guy, as none of your vehicles look dirty or greasy and rarely much rust! Must be a pleasure to work on!! I'm jealous! Hahaha
We don't see a lot of rust anymore. In the old days we had more of that but materials improved. It also depends on where you live of course. I must say the cars look alot cleaner on camera than in reality🤣
Love seeing the internals of the air pump! Really highlights the problem. A problem that more than just bmw shares. Late model dodge rams have this issue in droves. The vent valves freeze in the cold. Thanks again for the insights!
God bless you and your family Dan! When we need a good BMW, AUDI, BENZ education everyone knows to come to your channel!
😊👍
I don't know, if they replaced the air spring why they didn't check for air pressure ? this logic even before replace the air spring !!!!!!!
Just because most mechanics use the parts cannon until car is fixed, or until they get fed up and seek help. I suppose they have a lot of air springs fails, and usually, replacing them is the fix.
I think that this car should have been fix by BMW under warranty, as it's a 2017, and they offer at least 2 years warranty here in Europe.
Were they really thinking both air-springs had died at the same time? Does anyone know what happens if 1 air-spring fails?
@@Conservator. im sure both sides drop, they are common at the pump end with one release valve to let it down, this failed , so both drop
Jusb1066 Of course thanks!
Proberbly because it is the most common problem, and they never checked. The shop owner said they had time pressure 😔
I've been looking for blue diagnostic gloves but no one has heard of them , best scan tool I have ever seen .
Really helpful, Dan - this gave me confidence to remove my compressor and diagnose a fault with the release valve solenoid. Cost me £25 to fix and I've posted a video about it. Thanks!
DIagnoseDan I want to say a huge thank you for posting this video! It’s been a big help to me in diagnosing the issue with my F11 Air suspension.
I removed the air compressor completely and pulled everything apart and followed the same steps that you did. All componentry looked pretty good and inside the desiccant balls looked pretty dry. (Gave them a few minutes in the microwave anyway!) The compressor was running but the airflow was poor… Turns out it was the solenoid so I replaced it with a £30 part from eBay, reinstalled today and the car has raised so fingers crossed that was the only problem! 👍🏻🤘👊🏻
I really like how you went about this. I will try some of these techniques the next time I have an air spring issue
Thanks
Thanks for watching!
Vakwerk! Alles tot op de bodem uitzoeken en uitleggen! Ga zo door!
Bedankt Henri!😊👍
Thanks for sharing Dan.
I tell you quality goes out the window the newer the vehicle, not only European cars but all new cars in general. !!!
Prices go up and quality goes down.😪
Good morning! Great vid as usual!! I'm liking that license plate. Maybe they wouldn't warranty it because he was backing a boat into salt water. Or the little Dutch boy forgot to out his finger in the ? to prevent the water from leaking in. We will have to get him some DD gloves.
BILL 🤣🤣🤣
Actually that is a very, very possible cause!! A 2017 car is too soon for a rear airsping leak. This pump most likely sucked in sea water from the fresh air intake tube, which is located right behind the rear bumper.
Dan, you need to build this customer an Airmatic snorkel!!
Low quality materials for high quality price. Thank you penny counters.
🤣🤣
you are a true diagnosis man...thanks for be you are !!!!
Really enjoy these videos and the detailed explanations in practical experimentation. Well executed and many thanks.
Thanks Tom!👍
From my experience, the compressors usually fail because of leaking air springs that are not replaced until the compressor fails. When that happens, people realize the springs have failed but replacing them doesn’t fix the problem. I have had people replace compressors with leaking springs, only to have the compressor fail again from overuse.
Thanks for watching!
Next time with glove test - protective glasses please!
Safety third🤣
First timer on your channel and I’m very impressed with your detailed way of investigating the problem. You have another subscriber and a thumb up! Keep it up Dan
Good bonus footage.
Thanks!
From my expirience these compresors are good. They only fail when there is leak in the system or bad suspension airbags.
Maybe you live in another climate?
Im in UK and climate is not best :)
Very strange for airbags or air compresor to fail on 2 years old car
This car has a towbar fitted, maybe the compressor filled with water when launching a boat?
Bingo......that makes sense! That seems like a lot of water/damage for simply condensation.
The dryer medium will tell the tale.
It's not super common in The Netherlands to launch a boat. People that own boats, mostly have it in dry docked, close to their house or in a harbour. People generally use a towbar to hook up a trailer of some sort for vacation or hauling purposes.
I own the exact same model of this car, and i've seen 2 moisture issues before: 1 where moisture enters the roof lining via the trunk lid. The other one is similar, when opening the trunk lid and the drain holes are clogged, the water runs all the way down towards the fuse compartment.
I replaced a relay that was soaked and made sure to tie-wrap it higher. I've also replaced the Air suspension springs because mine were leaking, so it would be the first thing to do on this model, since it's a common fault.
kevin bradley @good point
Another great video Dan! Great demo!
Thank you!
Geweldige content Dan, ik loop momenteel te tobben met de luchtvering van mijn F11 dus hier heb ik zeker wat aan, bedankt!
Air shocks replaced, expensive mistake
😩
Who is going to pay for that mistake? Just always ask to get the"old broken" parts back after the fix.
As it is barely a 2 year old car, shouldn't have been fixed for free under warranty? Are warranties optional in Europe???
@@soonerlon Austria, BMW technician here. In my company these cars have a 4-5 year warranty. This part would be changed for free (free new part and free of service). We have to send back the broken parts thoe to BMW. I guess they are inspecting these parts for further improvement. If he would have changed the valve with an aftermarket part, that voids the warranty straight away. 95% of BMW's are leased in Austria. So all of them are guaranteed for 4-5 years.
In Germany a new BMW comes with a two year Guarantee and after that its pro-rated (Kulanz). Usually after about 3 to 4 your on your own with the repair costs.
Did you have to code in the blue gloves to make them work ?
Stephen Kasapis
Hey, it’s a BMW, it wouldn’t work if you didn’t🤣
The older models need coding not the new ones😉............🤣🤣
I love that you show us stuff the other people dont, 99% of youtubers show how to change oil and oil filter on a 2001 camry
Thanks for that!👍
Great video Dan!
Thank you for sharing...
👍
Thanks Mate!😊
BMW and Wabco ought to be ashamed. Same problems as before. Even the E61 had the same problems 15 years ago. Pump is placed inside a shield where mud/gravel/moist can come in but not out. And Wabco pump quality is poor. Should have a fail safe switch to turn off when air spring leaks too much.
You are right😢
it actually does shut off once a leak is detected, (pump not reaching required pressure within given time, 15s I think), and it will NOT allow you to turn it back on during that drive cycle even if you push the raise button, it instead give you malfunction message.
However this pump shut-down feature resets every drive/ignition key cycle, so owners tend to ignore it and just keep driving with a leaky air spring.
It's a user issue, not a pump issue. I would much rather have the pump come back after a key cycle and at least get me home than have to take it to the dealer immediately.
@@Uninfluenceable I agree, Ian. To some extent. But when many years of real life usage shows this kinds of problems on a two year old german car, I think that manufacturers should change things regarding programming and hardware specifications.
Btw - I have diagnostic tools aswell as experience of repairing wabco's and I still love driving german cars.
Take care
Makes me a bit sad to find the same old design flaws after decades. What happend to the old fashion "to take responsible position", BMW and others? Too much money down the drain this way.
Big thank you to DiagnoseDan :)
The e39 pump is much more reliable

Never panic😉
Dan you just saved my day...after a lot of headache, finally problem sorted..exactly the same problem I've had..this vent valve.. cheers buddy
yet, still wonder why there was nothing showing on my IDrive?? no message at all
nor the scan tool
Excellent Dan 👍🏻
Great video Dan you are the best no questions. thank you so much for your help .
Thanks Mario!
Good job man! Appreciate the way you break it down
Great video as always thanks for taking the time to explain why it failed ill keep an eye for the next video
🤣🤣 Thanks for watching!
Another great video. Very detailed and easy to follow. Your videos have a lot in common with South Main Auto. Eric O will also tear down defective parts to show what went wrong. It amazes me how many shop referrals to diagnosticians have to do with a failure to check the basics. I'm going to try not to get angry the next time I call the cable company for a problem and they ask me to check that the box is plugged in. Looking forward to the next video.
Thanks Scott👍👍
super dan fixed it again.thanks as always.

Love the special tool 🤣 no glove no love 👍 good diag sir
No glove no love🤣🤣
Great video Danny!
Thanks Carlos!
Super cool Dan. I had precisely this problem. I knew didn't have leaks after doing bubble test so it had to be from the pump. I found the pressure o/p problem from the pump by using the finger method but at that point I was stuck thinking a whole new pump was the only option. One last search of the web and I found you. Withing 5 mins of watching the video I had the 12v on the solenoid and I had established that it was sticking thanks to you. I freed it up and refitted and now all good. I have a new part on order but need to wait a week for delivery. Thanks Dan. Great video. Great trouble shooting. Great explanation and Great that you saved me £800 at the repair shop.
Regarding the other garage up mention - What REALLY pisses me off is that the car had both bags replaced at the other shop for no reason!!!! That's just lazy or idiotic problem solving and then they pass the cost of their stupidity to the customer. I am no mechanic but I can problem solve and if both bags are flat it has to be a part that is common to both bags that is at fault. That means leaky manifold supply line, pump housing, pump piston/ring seal etc..
Anyway, I am having a rant sorry. Dan your stuff is great keep up the great work.
Good content right here, I have just repair my F11 based on this video, just removed the air compressor and check the valve(it was stuck). Now car works nice.
Great!😊👍
Got my comp off at the minute as both sides are in the deck. (Both air bags new 1 year ago). Finger over the air outlet and could easily stop the pressure. But when I tried dump solenoid it appears to operate, so I pushed a pipe onto the little end of the solenoid and blew. Didn’t stop the air flow whether it was energised or not. So I’m still thinking this is the issue ?????
Your like a mad automotive scientist, great video as always.
Your saying I'm mad?..............🤣🤣
DiagnoseDan Mad definitely not.
Your enthusiasm and passion in explaining things, not only in this video but in some of your others is great.
I say mad but mean that in the nicest possible way.

so the customer paid for a pair of airsprings plus a compressor when the fault was actually the pressure release relay sticking / corroded .. well done .. Hallo Dan, weer een mooie demo van jouw vakmanschap. Top.

Hi Dan another great diagnosis video.

I wonder how much they spent on the wrong fix the first go a round, Thank God for channels like this, the community at large should thank God for you tube and the techs that get free skills, that will bring down the cost of repairs in the future for all the customers as the knowledge base grows. Thanks.
I would only replace the whole assembly. Great job Dan
Nice one again Dan.
I always do the finger test first on a pump quick & simple.
There’s one more check I would have c/o & that’s check the air inlet for blockages.
I have had several cars come to me for testing for a parts warranty claim but after testing found the air inlet filter blocked with mud.
Interesting to see the solenoid was at fault my guess was the piston seal worn a common fault on MB
Keep the informative videos coming 👍
All the best,

Thanks Madds great tip on checking the inlet for blockages!

Yes me to😢
From the vin nr. the car is 2011 not 2017 so it explain the failing compressor
Same issues when dealing with hydraulics. A sticky or stuck valves are common had an excavator that could swing left but barely swing right. Swap the hydraulic lines on the swing motor at 3,000 psi Whatever was stuck broke free. Reinstalled the lines back swing action works fine. Customer was amazed & able to finish his job, it's fun to fine the cause of the problem. I did replace the hydraulic filters once the machine completed it's job. I had fun explaining to the reps that built the machine. Luckily my boss videoed the whole thing to cover it under warranty. I wanted to replace the motor but only if the issue happened again it didn't I love my job as a field mechanic.
Working in the field is one of the hardest Jobs!
This video was brilliant. I had my compressor changed just over a year ago on my 2009 model. It lasted just over a year and now I've got another issue with it where the compressor will keep going and not turn off constantly. The right side of the car has dropped, the left side seems okay
