Hi, in this video today I attempt to repair some Philips Hair Clipper Pro QC5339 so I can give myself a haircut. These were purchased from eBay for 99p (excl. postage) and are unused.
If RUclips doesn't work out then I can go into hairdressing....MyMateVincenzo, 50% discount for the follicly challenged.

Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

The reason the battery's have not charged is a safety feature in the circuitry...If the battery's drop below a certain voltage the circuit will not start the charging and cuts all power to the whole unit. When you removed the battery and charged it out of circuit it brought the voltage up allowing the circuit to charge once the battery was placed back in circuit. As for why the battery dropped so low it was probably just left to long NiMah don't hold there charge like lithium battery's.

I've just had a similar problem with our cordless Vax. My daughter ran the battery until it stopped, didn't turn it off and put it back in the cupboard. When I tried to charge it there was nothing. I opened up the battery and went straight on to the battery pack with the bench top power supply for 5 minutes. That was enough charge for the charger to recognise the pack and fully charge it once more. I have had the same issue with Dewalt batteries on my cordless tools and done the same thing. It makes you wonder how many devices and battery packs end up in land fill just because they are a couple of volts below the threshold.

The reason why the battery didn't charge is likely because of a battery protection mechanism activating as the battery has dropped below the threshold voltage which protects the battery, device and user in case a battery fail; it essentially disables charging and the power up of the device. By taking it out and charging it on a external charger you're bypassing the shaver's protection mechanism and allowing the battery to once again receive charge. The batteries should be good without needing to be replaced. Overall a brilliant fix as always. Also a brilliant haircut you did yourself and I think it would be great to see your face more often in the videos.

I'm using the same Philishave now for more than 20 years. During its life, it got 4 battery swaps already. I just use regular AA NiMH batteries with short wires soldered to the terminals.
Your clippers have a charging circuit with some level of intelligence. There's a buck regulator, indicator LEDs and probably also a safety shut-off.
This clipper's dead cell could also be shocked back into life by connecting a freshly fully charged battery in parallel to the dead one for 10 to 20 seconds or until something gets hot. After that, connect the charger and give it a full charge. For a never used device, that would be a valid fix: those batteries are still new.

    • @enigmaticmf
      @enigmaticmf 2 года назад

I was just going to mention something about the batteries. I do the same thing. I just solder some tabs to regular Eneloop batteries to fix these items - should last MUCH longer to boot, too. I think I saw a '650' on one of the batteries in here, whereas Eneloop will be 2000mah.

That was a close shave! Great job getting it working again =D It's quite common for things like this with batteries for the battery to go totally flat, at which point it wont charge it. That may be because its so flat its drawing more current than the charge circuit permits. You could see that as a safety feature, but as you say - on batteries of this type, it's fine to charge them up from totally flat. Some of the life of the battery will be lost from letting it drain to zero in the past etc, but I've recovered products myself like this before, just by manually charging the battery to get it off the 0 level etc.

I had a rotary shaver which plugged into AC and took forever to charge. One day it wouldn't charge so I took it apart and removed the battery and everything except the motor and switch. I replaced the internal battery with a battery holder from an old solar garden light and it worked great. I can now use rechargeable batteries as well as alkalines in a pinch. I had these 15 minute rechargeable batteries at the time and I've used this setup for many years until the heads broke.

I agree with @Simon Wilkinson, the circuit has a safety feature that when the one battery/both batteries drop below a certain level, then the circuit breaker as it should be called kicks in to stop the batteries from being recharged, and renders a lot of things useless due to the cost of replacement of the batteries being replaced by a professional, or risking a diy job, or buying a replacement. diy would be easier but probably not enough videos on youtube on how to replace batteries in a specific item.

I don't believe it's necessarily "dangerous" for NiMH batteries/cells to go completely flat and they won't develop a memory the same as NiCads... It's not usually a good idea for them to stay discharged and since there are two cells in series that kept the device from running either plugged in or not. Nice score Vince and you look very dashing with your new haircut. BTW I've not seen the inside of a barber's shop in more than a decade (I shave my head and trim my beard myself)... My guess based on my experience repairing game boys is that the corrosion that built up did something to stop power from getting through to power the unit, even when plugged in. I had a gameboy I thought was completely dead due to corrosion on the battery terminals, and even plugging it in with an AC adapter didn’t make it work. However, after a significant cleaning, it started to work with the adapter. Sadly the battery terminal traces were gone, so-without jumper wires-it was unable to work via battery power.

Also, I used to get my hair done at home, using clippers like that, always went a #3, but then a #3 started becoming too short, unfortunately every clipper can come with different sizes, so a #3 on one isn't necessarily the same as a #3 on another.
I was also told by various hairdressers over the years that hair cut with clippers grows back faster, and I've personally found this to be true. With clippers my haircut is every 5 weeks, with scissors (and a little electric clipper to tidy up around the ears, etc... at the end) my haircut is every 10 weeks.
So for me, it's off to a no-appointment hairdresser every 10 weeks.

Only just started watching the vid, about 2mins in, but couple of things just from the beginning: Just because it looks clean, doesn't mean it is new :) I'm very good with keeping things like that clean. My original electric tooth brush (Oral-B really fancy expensive one, Triumph model) looked pristine for its first 5yrs, but then it started deteriorating, and by year 10 the rubber had fully worn away.
My current electric tooth brush (Another Oral-B fancy one) I've had for 2yrs now and still looks as new as the day I bought it.
Secondly, I've had electronic devices where if the battery is dead, the unit won't work regardless of whether you give it AC power or not.
Nintendo DS Lites are like this, they won't even turn on if there isn't something present on the battery contacts, I had an old laptop, where if you removed the battery pack, the laptop wouldn't turn on with the charger, because the charger just kept the battery charged, the battery was what was powering the laptop even with the AC plugged in (It was an HP Compaq laptop).

I had a very similar problem with a rechargeable remington recently, the batteries do discharge at slightly different rates and occasionally need to be charged separately if they get too out of sync, as the charger balancer won't charge if this happens.
Pretty sure these will only run from the mains if the charger is running, which it will stop doing so if it thinks the batteries are full, or faulty.

I know the reason why. I have previously repaired LiPo powerbanks and NiMH trimmers that don't charge/discharge at all. All it takes is to disconnect the batteries from circuit and reconnect to start charging/use. This resets the charging IC and starts working normally. Most trimmers usually use a most minimal dumb circuits.

what you'll probably find is that there is a charge controller IC on the board, that if it registers the batteries as below a certain threshold, it declares them as defective and will not allow current to flow through the circuit, forcing a charge into the battery will wake up that IC and will now allow charging and operation mate

Hey Vince have you considered merchandise? You can throw something together very quickly such as just MMV logo on hat/mug/t-shirt/sweater and use a prebuilt storefront. Or spend a lot of time and do repair mats and tools (spudgers, screwdrivers etc.). Up to you.
Also I think you'd do well monetarily with live streams. I think the drama of not knowing whether you can fix the item or not would be very compelling for the audience (although I know you don't like idle time in videos). And you can edit it down to a usual video afterwards. Just a thought as it's not for everyone - and it is a bit more work.

    • @thejamesieboy

You could be on to something about a live stream, although to combat the length and idle time do it as a premier. Still has the feel of being live with the chat, but with the idle bits pre-edited. Also instead of Vince being distracted trying to keep up with chat, he could interact with it no problems.

The charging voltage of the batteries are always slightly higher than the nominal voltage of the battery. So, to test if the charging circuit is working you should put the meter leads across the batteries and check the voltage with an without the charger plugged in. The voltage between the batteries should be different when is charging.

The fibers inside the battery have to be shocked back to life. Easier fix is to plug it into the charger 🔌 and then quickly plug it and unplug it from the wall about 10 times.

Nice work, Vince. You could send Anders those hair clippings so he can sell them via his Fan Club......or maybe clone you

NiMh? Jokers. Minimum voltage detection before initiation of charge is pretty common with microprocessor controlled chargers as a safety measure. Problem is you can't charge when batteries are dead flat. Trickle charging for a short while is enough to get them above the detection voltage. Swapping them is straightforward except when they have spot welded tabs. Don't solder batteries. Good job mate.

You could start using community posts to announce videos so that people can help you with suggestions before you start the repair.
