Starting in the 70s ... you have to include all the "advancements in technology" and bands who experimented with that ...
One big development was Kate Bush and her MUSIC VIDEOS for Babooshka and Wuthering Heights (IIRC), which created the music video genre which had "a story/artistic performance" instead of "the musicians standing still in a studio, lip synching the song".

I was surprised that fans seem to peg that song as their favorite when I always thought I ran was hands down the favorite. I was at a concert of theirs a year year or two ago at Sea World Orlando and they played Space Age Love song twice.... Someone in the crowd yelled for them to play it again and then the chants built up into roar to play it again. it was so popular. And they did. And the second time around it was pure magic with the crowd singing and dancing and getting into it. There was something special about the band crossing over the lines and doing their own thing, out of bounds to do what they wanted even though they were contracted to do just their standard approved show. I have seen them before and since so it is not just a usual thing for them to do, play that song twice to make the crowd think they are getting something special from the band.

  • @guidedmeditation2396
    @guidedmeditation2396 2 месяца назад +5

One of the reasons this song is an icon of the 1980's is they had just recorded it one day and then the executives just launching a new network called MTV heard it. Gave the band some money to buy some new clothes and and a few hours later they threw together this video with tin fil and mirror and a turning table. And by the next morning they put it on air and began playing it every hour on MTV because they only had a handful of videos to play. The exact details are very close to what I described. It was total spur of the moment, seat of their pants, happened too fast to overthink it and it was a masterpiece for its time. MTV was a huge cultural shock for America and the world and they promoted this video every hour. That is why it has become such an icon for the 1980's. I have seen this band about three times in the last couple of years and they still draw a great crowd and have some magic. The lead singer is bald though. His seagull hair style flew away.

Those are electronic drums, which do not make their own sound like regular traditional analog drums. You hit an electronic drum & the sensor pad creates an electronic signal that ultimately goes out to a drum machine that tells to make a drum sound from a digital sample or MIDI & then the final sound comes out electrically through a speaker, headphones or recorder etc. Electronic drums became very popular & revolutionary after they matured in the early 1980s (but were developed in the 1970s), when digital sampling became matured itself in that time. Those types of drum sounds were just another way to experiment with the new music & audio technology of that time, including the maturing & advancement of synthesizers invented in the 1960s & 70s. That is what the 1980s were known for, the `synth sound`, which included electronic drums. And we see here that Flock of Seagulls were part of that advancing musical movement. Today we have the retro enthusiasm of the 1980s & without the electronic sound of that time period, we would not have the Synthwave & Retrowave new music of today that tries to copy it.
And yes, electronic drums themselves have also advanced & people today do still use electronic drums where & when appropriate. I was also a Flock of Seagulls fan of that time & still today. In their old age now (they are in their 60s & 70s), they still play music from time to time, doing concerts etc, you should check out some of their youtube videos so you see what they look like these days. Here they are performing `I Ran So Far Away` live in 2023, except this time they are using traditional analog drums ... ruclips.net/video/BK5rh_llYNI/видео.html

This time period in the early 1980’s is sometimes referred to as The Second British Invasion. MTV, HBO’s Video Jukebox, and other music video outlets were becoming very popular in the U.S. At the time not many American bands were making videos, so these channels started playing lots of songs from Britain where music videos had been around for some time. As the videos for these British groups became popular, radio airplay and record sales followed along. Many of these early imported videos were made on low budgets and had a DIY look and feel. But nobody really noticed since the entire music video format was something completely new and exciting for most viewers.

In the 80’s I had dinner with a group of people which included the lead singer of Flock of Seagulls (whatever his name is). It was at the Rainbow in Hollywood, a restaurant next door to the Roxy on the Sunset Strip. I was in a Doors tribute band called Wild Child, and we were playing at the Roxy. The Seagull guy was the date of Diana, my best good friend Dave’s ex-girlfriend (Dave was the drummer in Wild Child). Diana was really cute and sweet, and she dated mostly musicians. She was engaged to the lead singer of Great White, until they burned down that nightclub. She was also in Oliver Stone’s movie, “The Doors”. In the scene where Pamela goes to a motel looking for Jim, Diana is walking down the hallway, away from the camera, totally naked.
Anyway, the Seagull guy was an arrogant prick. None of us could stand him. I was really happy when Flock of Seagulls become a one-hit wonder. As a songwriter/singer/musician, I think this song is mediocre at best. It is repetitious, boring, and just drones on and on until it mercifully stops, like a headache stopping - a huge relief. And, as George Harrison once said, “That’s not a melody, it’s a malady!” Lousy songwriting.

This was literally a last minute video. They were given money for clothes and told they needed the video done for play on MTV withing I think it was 24 hours.

It's still a great song, but it's impossible to understand how fresh this sound was when hearing it at the time it was released. Before synths were prevalent, before stadium DJs, and at a time when 70's hard rock bands still completely dominated radio.

The video is dated in a bad way, but the music stands up as solid 80s synth pop. Very simple, very catchy.

Grand theft auto Vice City and a Guitar hero at the very minimum might be where you know it from. Stangely they seem like more of a cult band in the UK and probably had more success in the US. They were self admitted relative amateurs which I think shows through and made for an interesting sound.

You like the new wave sound but more modern should check out any of the music videos from Brandon Flowers The Desired Effect album. "Lonelytown" is a banger. I also would suggest Brigitte Calls Me Baby "Too Easy" and "We Were Never Alive"

Best part of this jam is bass and guitar jamming together. Throw in the synth drum and it's magical. As far as the video goes, 80's cheesy. You can see the camera in the middle wrapped in foil. Still, a classic song.

The video hasn't aged well but the song is still a banger. There was more talk about their haircuts and fashion sense - or lack there of - when they hit the scene than their music. Record companies were still scrambling with the concept of videos in the early MTV era. They knew what to do with classic rockers and hair bands, but these kids standing behind synthesizers? They had no idea.
As for the electronic drums - the drummer could tune their sound by turning some knobs on a controller or, in some cases, switch out the sound completely for another. Need dogs barking to a beat? Select a preset. The pads were struck with drumsticks or hands in much the same way as finger drummers today use controllers like Push or hardware from companies like AKAI. Almost all of today's rhythm tracks are generated by hitting pads of some sort.

The way they were talking about it makes me believe that they've never seen one, they thought it was some kind of a fake, plastic toy drum kit.

One of the best pop songs from the 80's. Space Age Love Song next. You will see the Flock of Seagulls hairdo. I believe the drummer and singer are brothers. The brother was a hairdresser.

The song works as a song. It sounded great on the radio! The video, salt to taste. Like many videos from the early eighties, the audio quality leaves much to be desired. Check out Depeche Mode, Eurythmics, and Missing Persons for more classic 80's synth pop. Drum machines were brand new back then and bands sometimes over did it with them. But don't think that drummer wasn't working, cause he was.
