    I prefer the sound of the bike, but shot a lot of it in slow-mo... so excuse the corny music! 😂

    The guys below are correct about the fuel tap but as soon as it floods, not point kicking anymore. Just turn off fuel, take out the spark plug and give it a few kicks. The excess fuel from cylinder will come out the spark plug hole and the fuel from the wet plug will evaporate, then put back together and start again. Only take about 60 seconds tops of easy work as apposed to killing yourself kicking if off 15 times! Also while the spark plug is out you can monitor its colour for tuning the carb or if it needs replacing.

      Thanks, Jon! Yeah, I was not thinking at all. I didn't realize the fuel tap had 3 positions, so I never actually closed it. I wanted to kick myself when I figured that out. Now I can start the bike with my hand.

      @@GreaseAndGravel It's not just you, those 3 way taps are still being used on my 2018 Beta and I still have to scratch my head sometimes which way they go.

    You are doing fine. Don't worry about double compressing before the wheelie. If it helps you get the front wheel up that's fine. You will build confidence and soon be doing bigger wheelies.

    Saw a great tutorial by Jan Peters, he marked out about 10m, then said try to lift & drop the f/wheel 3x as you go along the 10m. So you get used to the lift & covering the back brake.

    Don’t know if this will help cold starting the Beta but the owners manual states the follow procedure, open fuel cock, pull up choke on carb for 3 seconds, close choke, kick over bike whilst applying a little throttle. (For hot start obviously no choke).

    Your left index finger must be on the clutch lever.
    Helped your motorcycle to raise the front wheel by pulling and releasing the clutch lever, without accelerating too much.
    The position on the bike is almost correct, flex your knees more and your arms more outstretched, don't be scared if you feel overturned is normal.
    Keep your right foot always ready to brake the rear wheel and your left index finger to squeeze the clutch.

    • @GreaseAndGravel
      @GreaseAndGravel  4 года назад

      Thanks, Alessandro! I appreciate the advice. I was unsure whether I should start with the clutch or without. I've heard some people say clutch is better and other say start without it. Either way, I want to first make sure covering the rear brake becomes second nature. Yeah, I see myself pulling my arms in because I am scared I am going to flip backwards. I struggle to commit leaning back far enough. I will try to bend my knees a bit more too. Cheers!

      When you are standing straight and the handlebar is dangerouslynear to your teeth you are almost on the verge of tipping :)
      Continue to train with perseverance, you will see that very soon you will succeed in your intentions.
      Greetings from Italy my friend.

      Thanks brother, I appreciate it! I never thought of it that way (pulling handlebars near chin bringing it close to tipping) I will keep at it and try ise the clutch to pop the wheel up. Cheers from South Africa.

    Always turn the fuel off on the beta when you are not riding it otherwise it fills the crank case. so arrow pointing to rear wheel or 9 o'clock as you look at it. great stuff mate keep at it. using a small bank or an obstacle helps to lift the front wheel and get you used to it being in the air

    • @GreaseAndGravel
      @GreaseAndGravel  3 года назад +1

      Thanks for the tips. The funny (not funny) thing is that I never realized the tap has three settings. I switched between 12 and 3, thinking I am shutting it off. Then I ordered a new tap and realized it has to be at 9. So silly! Now it starts first kick. I'll try the kicker to get the wheel up. Cheers

    Check that float bowl is operating properly. Your floats might be saturated with fuel, if they are black plastic you have to weigh them, they should be labeled with the correct weight. If they are white you can see if there is fuel in them. Or the tip of the valve may be worn allowing fuel to pass when closed.

      Thanks for the advice Andrew! It ended up being me not closing the fuel tap properly! I didn't know it had 3 positions 🙄

    You got it down. Just a little more bend in your knees when you compress and feel the bounce off your ankles and don’t be afraid to go further back. That balance point is very strange to get to at first but once your body gets used to the sensation it will feel natural and then you can work on your hip movements for side to side balance! One more thing, only compress once, the double compress thing you’re doing is creating instability. Cheers mate!

    • @GreaseAndGravel
      @GreaseAndGravel  3 года назад +1

      Wow, thanks for the great advice!! I'd LOVE to know what that balance point feels like. I've found it on the MTB, but then the peddling messes up the balance. Yeah, I noticed the 2 compressions... I couldn't figure out why I am doing it. Unfortunately, I sold the Beta (stupid stupid me!), so I'll have to muster up the courage to try on the XR650L... but it seems a bit dangerous at my age. Cheers

      @@GreaseAndGravel try it on grass! Deflate the tires a bit and it’ll have enough grip and stability. That way if you drop the bike it won’t get damaged! It’s the same feeling on the bike that you get on the mtb. Or if you’ve ever wheelied a whee chair. Just kind of have to relax into it!!

    • @GreaseAndGravel
      @GreaseAndGravel  3 года назад +1

      @@IslandInsanity Thanks! I really appreciate the help. I will look for a piece of grass to try it on. Strangely, I've dreamt of that weightless feeling countless times, but never been there on the bike.

      The Beta has been standing for a few months, so I am practicing on the MTB. Realised that I bend my elbows way too much. I need a lot more practice. Keep at it!!

  • @davekelly7184
    @davekelly7184 3 года назад +2

    The fundamentals are there, you just need to look at your timing.
    Firstly, try not to do any compressing prior to the main compression, you seem to be unsettling the bike just before the main event.
    Secondly, the compressing of the suspension should start with a squat with bent arms. Then quickly push down with your legs and arms at the correct distance from the obstacle.
    Now this is the real critical point, as the suspension bottoms, Hit the throttle! This is critical so as to make the most of the rebound and the de weighting of the bike..
    Don't for get to cover the back brake!!

    • @GreaseAndGravel
      @GreaseAndGravel  3 года назад

      Thanks, Dave! Yeah, I noticed that I compress it twice. For some reason my brain just wouldn't time the wheelie right without it. Thanks for the tips on the squat with bent arms. I will try that on the XR (sold the Beta unfortunately). I am very cautious, so will drill in the rear covering a bit more before I try it on the big bike. Cheers
