Some people around me don't understand why I love listening to this kind of songs, most especially Karen carpenter songs. They said you're in a modern day now and your choice of music is from 70's and 80's. They can't relate to the feeling I have everytime I listen to these kind of misic. I just told them me too I can't find myself being entertained with modern day songs you like, each of us have our own uniqueness whatever it is. Let's just respect each other whatever likes we have.
Maybe these people don’t understand what real music is. Karen’s voice was and always will be. She didn’t need to run around on stage half-naked, she had REAL talent, she had a natural God given beautiful voice. She could have sung the phone book and it would have been special. A lot of music today is just rubbish.
I was in Junior High School when hear this song for the first time in 1980. Now, I am listening again this amazing song from amazing voice in 2021 ! I LOVE KAREN....!!!!!!
What a pure, soulful and warm performance by such a fragile young lady. You cannot be untouched when you hear her. Listen with headphones or earbuds to pick up the subtlety of the instrumentals in harmony with Karen. I particularly love the oboe throughout, and of course we can hear our beloved Tony on guitar. I'm playing solitaire too, Karen. RIP
Pure emotion is what Karen Carpenter always gave. Her voice was & still is incomparable. I’ve only ever heard one person who nearly came close to imitating Karen’s voice. That’s was Sandi Patti performing her “Jesus Loves Me” medley from 1983/84.
This song was what accompanied my loneliness during the first year of graduate study in the US in the 70’s. I was thousands miles from home then. After all these years, the second this song started, all the bitter and sweet memories of that time came back to life.
When i was a child in the 1970s . My mother had a carpenters album on vinyl she used to play . I loved listening to them . ❤ the 1970s was a good time to live in . England seemed better than today's country far better .
My favorite song of the Carpenters. This song demonstrates her exceptional voice better than any other. The incredible depth of her voice simply goes to my core, my soul. We lost so much when she died at just 32 years old.
The most beautiful, angelic voice, as a musician I can relate to perfect tones & hers are second to none, spot on, could not be better & her brother Richard's background voice only adds another dimension....Karen should easily qualify for Hall of Fame....she left us much too early & why wasn't someone able to help with her physical situation? The world grieves over her loss😢
Simply stunning. It gets me every time. Goosebumps all over. The musical arrangement at the end of the song is absolutely breathtaking. Bravo Richard!!!
From her first hit Close to You, I fell in love with her voice and songs. I believe she will go into the music hall of fame as one of the greatest female singers ever.
This song drips with such a lonely, heart-wrenching nostalgia. I don't know why it affects me the way it does because I'm far from being anything like the man in the song. No doubt part of the reason it pulls on my heart strings is because of the sadness I feel about Karen's untimely death.😪 Also, it carries me away and places me in an era in my life that seems so very distant. Godspeed Karen Carpenter❣️
I think k that each one of us is like the man in the song to some extent , we all closed our hearts at times and chose to play it safe , with the price involved. it's a universal theme. more so for us men .we all know the feeling :)
Hermano,me recuerda duramente a mi papá ,mi papá ya murió ,odio decir que murió .. marco mi infancia y mi vida con estás canciones . Viva Karen ,viva la vida
I am 64 year old man from Indonesia. Magical... I've heard this song Solitaire since 1973, sung by the prominence, Andy Williams. But when I heard it performed by the Karen Carpenters some time ago, it was as if I had never heard it at all. So beautiful... so touching! And, so different! Love you, Karen! 😍❤
This was my father's favorite song and everytime i hear this song i always remember his saying that he will never ever love someone else because for him my mom will always be his last love even though my mom didn't give it back to him.
Hi Karen , you have such a so that expresses so much when your voice transcends anything in the world . Beautiful beyond words , Your Soul . Miss you and will always carry you in my Heart .
This recording is made all the more amazing when you find out that this was the only take she wanted to do. Although she performed it so flawlessly and with so much emotion, she had said she didn't connect to the song.
The first time I watched Karen Carpenter back in the early days I was hooked on her one of a lifetime voice and I never have wavered! May you rest in peace little one.
i agree completely with all the other comments praising karen's voice and richard's arranging. trust me, NO ONE was a bigger carpenters' fan back-in-the-day, and hopefully i'm still on the short list. i would like to contribute one additional kudos, if i may to the recording studio/engineer(s). the beginning, and another section later, with karen singing alone; the quality of the reproduction is impeccable. every little nuance of karen's vocals is 100% clear as a bell. i'm sure they were using the state-of-the-art technology of the day, but still. fantastic job. thank you.

Neil Sedaka's version was sung as if a man was telling his own story, while Karen's version was sung as if a narrator was telling a sad story..both versions are simply exceptional
True. Comparing them is an exercise in futility. Neil Sedaka is a genius songwriter and musician and an exceptional singer, but Karen's just out of this world. This cover goes on to show how she can really capture and express the precise emotion required for a song. Neil and Karen should have done a duet.

I knew a young man just like this . He loved listening to the Carpenters too. He passed away at only 36 years old very lonely and of a broken heart 😢😢😢
This song used to make me unbearably sad even though I was too young to understand the grownup kind of pain it described when it came out in the 70s. I took the line about a little home going up in smoke literally and thought it was about someone's house burning down! Now, I listen and realize it is a very sad story of a different kind, but it has a hint of hope in that he is just pretending he will never love again.
What a stunning songstress I’ve always liked this song and looked up the lyrics video version but I didn’t need to read them as I can perfectly hear every word Karen sang If I could have given her my spare 2 stone odd to save her from her eating disorder life may be different Anyway you can’t go through life with “shoulda, coulda, wouldas” attitude I’ve had 2 Carpenters ear worms in my head all week and hope it’s my late Dad looking after me Thank you xx

There was a man
A lonely man

He'll never love again
And keeping to himself he plays the game
Without her love
It always ends the same
While life goes on around him everywhere
He's playing solitaire
A little hope
Goes up in smoke
Just how it goes
Goes without saying
There was a man
A lonely man
Who would command
The hand he's playing
And solitaire's the only game in town
And every road that takes him
Takes him down
And by himself it's easy to pretend
He'll never love again
