In the Caesars Julian does not scoff at Marcus Aurelius, or most of the emperors there. He holds them in high respect, and the work concludes with Julian concluding that Marcus Aurelius was the best of all the emperors. The only emperors he speaks negatively of in that book are ones that were almost universally agreed to be bad emperors, like Caligula and Nero.

Modern historians agree that this phrase is most probably a fake, invented by christian chronographers some centuries after the death of Julian. However, we must consider the last words that attest 2 chronographers of the time, who they had spoken with a soldier who was present at the tent in which the emperor died. Thus, his real last words should be; Ἥλιε, ἀπώλεσας Ἰουλιανόν which means Oh Helios, you killed Julian.
