      the amount of people saying "just be responsible" is making me upset, like it's not that easy. With a lot of money comes a lot of temptation, it's fighting the temptation that's hard, especially if you grew in a tough lifestyle and all a sudden you have enough money to get everything you wanted.

    • @illestgyal
      @illestgyal 4 года назад +13

      @@mdhen01 @Marshmello being responsible = spend within your means. Know when to splurge on something and how to not overtly impulse buy. Yes it's hard but when you are aware of where your money goes, you're being responsible. No one is saying to be a perfect saver, I am defs not. Moral is, just don't wild out. At the end of the day, a credit card is borrowed money 🤷🏾‍♀️ if ppl can't handle paying back that debt, then they shouldn't own one or should educate themselves more on the topic.

    A Credit Card is not that scary. You just need to be a responsible spender. You need to start building credit as best as you can but not spend your max limit each month. Plus as you get older you'll need to make serious life changing purchases so its important to start building credit. Just don't blow and spend your limit each month. lol

But all of us gotta pay taxes, want to live on our own, etc...SMH. But just be mindful of your credit card! Pay it off in full each month to avoid interest and also accumulating debt. I learned that the hard way 🙃

      Yeah I’m older than BM & Ashley and it saddens me that the US school curriculum still doesn’t teach basic personal finance to the younger generation.
      I was dumb at math and couldn’t imagine grasping even pre-calc, but honestly how many ppl need to know theoretical math?
      No matter what path you choose in life, you’re going to need to learn how to pay taxes and how to budget your personal finances. Why don’t they teach these necessary life skills in school? It’s as if the US school system wants you to be financially illiterate and end up in debt...

      Yeah it’s good for them to learn the basics for their own knowledge. I’ve read horror stories of managers stealing money blind from artists.
      Since they’re foreigners living in Korea and likely classified as independent contractors, I’d imagine it’s a bit more difficult. I don’t know if they have to pay both US & Korean taxes either. Better if they sit down with someone who can explain everything to them so they’re informed.

    I highly highly suggest building credit EARLY! Especially if you're responsible enough with your money. I remember my first credit card was a $500 limit. Implementation of your own credit card (not mommy or daddys) while you're a young adult will teach you a lot. It taught me a lot about personal finance and I'm still learning. I highly recommend the subreddits r/personalfinance for y'all in the states and r/personalfinancecanada for my fellow maple leaves. Educate yourself on your money and let it work for you!! Do not however, get a credit card if you just intend to max it out to stunt n flex ur drip. It's borrowed money honeyzzz, make sure you pay it off!! That said. I'm looking forward to this episode, I'm hype that pH-1 is back. Dive 👏 keep 👏 it👏 coming 👏

    I always heard that credit cards were scary, but once I grew up I learned to budget and that made me realize that some people just aren't financially responsible. It's a habit, that's why it's called your "spending habits" so just work on building a better, more responsible habit. I did research on budgeting and credit cards by myself (and I'm still learning), and it's tough in the beginning, but you get used to it and then it kinda becomes automatic.

  • @chichi7391
    @chichi7391 4 года назад +12

    Ashley you should increase the limit cause if you spend the same as usual, but have a higher limit you'll be using a smaller percentage of the credit each month which is good for your credit score. Having a higher limit doesn't mean you need to spend more. But you know yourself best so if it would tempt you to spend more, I guess don't do it then haha

  • @dieyavi
    @dieyavi 4 года назад +2

    Treat your credit card like a debit card and you won't end up overspending. Put all your purchases on it only if you know you have the money RIGHT NOW to pay it all back. I suggest everyone get a credit card early on to start building that credit. Not sure how it works in Korea, but i know that a lot of the countries like the US use your credit history to get you rates on larger purchases like a car or home. The longer your history without major hiccups, the better your credit score and rates.

    2:13 I don't blame you BM. When you get a credit card, you have discipline yourself to not spend over your budget. All it is, is money loan to you from the bank. It's not money you keep because it's not money that you worked to earn. I'm glad that you are smart about it and thought it through before making an impulsive decision.

      @user-rt3kf7ru9g 4 года назад +9

      It's safer in the sense that it holds you back from overspending, but when it comes to fraudulent charges, you're much more protected with credit. With debit it can be a hassle, or just plain impossible, to dispute depending on the situation. If someone gets a hold of your debit, they can wipe you clean whereas with credit there's a max cap and they'll just consider it fraud, so no charges. Either way, the biggest thing is as long as you regularly keep an eye on your account(s) for any suspicious activity, there should be no problem.

    A thing my highschool teacher taught me (though I haven't put it to use since I don't have a cc) is to only use the card for a monthly metrocard, only that and pay it at the end. Easiest way to build the credit I guess (this probably doesn't apply everywhere, but if you have bus fairs I guess)

    • @slalomie
      @slalomie 4 года назад +1

      Ha you’re in NY? That’s actually a pretty good idea. A credit card is basically borrowed money you have to pay back at the end of the month. Treat a credit card like cash/debit card. Only use it to pay for things you can pay off in full at the end of the month. Otherwise, if you make only the minimum payment, you will have to pay interest on top of the leftover amount you owe. That’s how people end up in trouble paying more than they owe. It’s how credit card companies make their money.

    I'm 29 and I have had 3 credit cards (10,000$ combined) for the last 4 years. I got them with the intention to travel and maxed them out on my first trip because it was a long 2 month voyage. When I got back from my trip it took about 2 and half years of saving to get it to 25%. I mostly only use my credit cards now and then pay it off automatically from my checking account to keep it in the 25%-30% sweet spot range to keep my credit score up. The higher your credit score the more financial opportunities you have. I've been doing this method for about a year and my credit score has become excellent. When I finally go back to school after the pandemic is over it will be easy for me to get loans and financial aid for my education. It just takes a bit of trial, error, a bit of math and experience to get the hang of it. It shouldn't be scary. :)

    I actually have a lot to say about credit card.
    1. Get a credit card with a good reward program. ( Good introduction bonus: 0% interest first year + spend a certain amount to get intro reward bonus money)
    2. Have this mentality. Use a credit card and treat it like your debit/check card. You are spending that amount of money anyways if you use your debit card so why not use your credit card instead and get them cash back reward. It might not be a lot but it's better than nothing and over time it builds up. ( I bought my plane ticket with only reward points.)
    3. Every month payoff the WHOLE ENTIRE balance!!! Don't be tempted by the minimum amount due. Credit card company be out here trying to tempted you into paying less but in the end you are paying more because of interest. Ex. originally $5 🍕 after months of interest 🍕 now costed you $10 . INTEREST IS NOT MONEY YOU SPENT buying things you like and etc. So why you gotta pay extra.
    I think owning a credit card is great! I don't know how does building credit work but I having one because I like reward/cashback. It goes without saying you should exercise good spending habits. Budget and planning. What's your income minus your fix expenses every month. How much money you have left over to enjoy life and save?

    • @slalomie
      @slalomie 4 года назад

      Yep you’ve got it down! When I was a teenager, I was a bit hesitant to get a credit card bc I saw how much debt my brother accrued overspending and I was afraid. But if you treat it like cash/debit card that you have to pay off in full every month, it’s great. Like you said, the points and rewards can be pretty nice.
      Building credit is exactly what you’re doing 😄 As long as you don’t use more than say 40-50% of your credit limit every month and pay your card in full monthly, your credit will be great. Good credit is basically saying that you’re good with money and likely to pay your bills on time. It can be useful in the future if you make a big purchase like a car or house that typically require monthly payments, so you can get favorable lower interest rates.

    One tip I have about a credit card is if you are using it specifically to build your credit make sure you have the money already. Example you are trying to build your credit so you want to make a purchase that’s of let’s say $150 dont buy that item unless you already have that money now and save it till you pay it off. So then you won’t be afraid or feel such a burden when you pay it off. Also try not to spend more than 30% of your credit card limit !!

    the amount of people saying "just be responsible" is making me upset, like it's not that easy. With a lot of money comes a lot of temptation, it's fighting the temptation that's hard, especially if you grew in a tough lifestyle and all a sudden you have enough money to get everything you wanted.

    Me is totally like BM😅🤣 , scared to have credit card ( but heard some financial advice that use credit card during like really x1000 emergency time or use it to pay the thing that you manage to pay credit debt in time before interest rate raised )

    Bro how is BM 28 years old without a credit card?? Maybe it’s different in Korea, but in the US you have to have credit in order to buy things like cars, or to rent in most areas. I got my first credit card when I was 19.
    That being said, I would suggest paying as much of it off as you can every month, and always do it on time. They can charge late fees, and the money leftover that you don’t pay off will accrue more interest the longer is sits unpaid in your balance. That’s how they trick you into spending more money in the long run.
