  • Residents are dismayed after a hidden camera disguised as a rock was discovered in a Chino Hills neighborhood. The camera was designed to blend in with its environment and was carefully placed in a grassy area underneath a tree on a center median.
The camera was also pointed directly at James Dimapasok’s home. “It was a camera that was covered in clay that looked like a rock so it was very precise,” Dimapasok said. “It was on a power bank so it was a cordless camera.”
Dimapasok's neighbor alerted him last week after discovering the hidden camera outside of their homes on Glen Ridge Drive. “I was scared,” he said. “My wife was crying.”
KTLA’s Shelby Nelson reports on May 9, 2024.

If it was a hidden camera inside, in a room, a car etc.. that can go undetected indefinitely, they could certainly leave it for much longer. But this is outside in a very public/high traffic area. Forget the grass growing and has to be cut, but just the fact that an area where people walk by, or even dogwalking etc... the chance it will be stumbled upon is high. • @Arkryal
    @Arkryal Месяц назад +341

Come on police... This is happening all over the world. You know exactly what this is, lol. Either they're playing dumb on purpose or they actually are dumb. Was the scooter not a dead giveaway?
This is a "porch-pirate". They often use scooters and bikes because they're quiet and can be taken right up to the porch, never leaving the thieves' possession. Park a van around the corner, so plates aren't seen by doorbell cameras, and use a scooter to go door to door because it's faster than on foot, and these guys cover huge ranges, 40-50 miles a day. They're not specifically looking at that house, they're watching the street for delivery vans. Then they know when to go down each street. "When" they strike is important, for a porch pirate, it's all about the "When". Too early and they get nothing, too late and all the good stuff is gone. They need real-time recon.
They used to just follow the vans, but now many of the vans in problem areas actually have rear cameras that can spot when there's a vehicle following for a long time. They're not ubiquitous yet by any means, but they are becoming annoyingly common for thieves, lol. Those follower cameras have led to quite a few arrests and convictions in the last couple of years.
Also a couple years ago, you knew for example that UPS would show up to a given neighborhood at 9AM, FedEx at 2PM, Amazon at 8PM, etc, with predictable routes and schedules. That made it easy for Porch Pirates, so most companies opted for some randomization in their routes in non-commercial, problem areas.
Thieves responded by ordering small $1 items to random addresses in a targeted neighborhood so they'd get tracking details and they'd be notified when it and presumably everything else in the area arrived. So services stopped real-time tracking for small ticket items. You can still track your new TV, but a 6-pack for hair ties just gets there when it gets there, lol.
So next the thieves opted to use public (usually DOT) traffic cam feeds. This was useful, as a still image can be AI-processed every few seconds to detect specific vehicles and send an SMS alert, so the thief is cruising the neighborhood and gets an alert for the big brown van on Maple Ave in real time, and that whole setup to monitor an entire city costs under $500 using the public cameras. Municipalities responded in a variety of ways, usually with a delay and some sort of time-out on the public camera feeds, forcing you to log in to see them, or enter a captcha every 15-30 minutes. That's still easily worked around, but requires a slightly more tech-savvy thief.
So then thieves place their own cameras in targeted areas so they retain control of the feed. It costs a little more, but they break even in a day or so, the cost of doing "business". And the cameras and battery packs are cheap (under $15 on Temu and Wish), the only real expense is the wireless communications, usually these are planted outside houses with unprotected wifi. Then wireless communication is just a $5 wifi addon to the camera. All-in $25-$50 per camera with a little DIY assembly, and ~$500 on the back-end for the computer the cameras transmit to, which detects vehicles and relays messages to the people on the ground. Sometimes they will use cellular connections tied to prepaid accounts (paid in cash) as well. It's still much cheaper and more efficient than using a human "spotter".
This is not new. This is not a mystery. This is not obscure information known only to insiders, lol. The police know exactly what this is, so why don't the home owners? It seems like something you could tell them to both put their minds at ease and help them to take necessary precautions. This is just someone trying to steel your delivered socks, USB charging cables and whatever other crap you order online, and they are still easily thwarted if you pay attention. And now you know where they're operating. You DO NOT put this on the news, just set a bait package and wait down the street and arrest him. It's easy. All this report and the police's silence to the homeowner did was tip your hand to the bad guys. Report on it AFTER the arrest, not before, lol.

The person who did it disguised themselves to look like a kid with an animal hat with ears and using a scooter. Human trafficking most likely to see which kids walk home alone. This is a tactic sometimes deployed by private investigators and law enforcement or anyone trying to surveille someone but setting up on the house in a vehicle is not possible... When I used to investigate workmens comp claims we would deploy setups like this in a McDonald's bag that looked like someone littered their trash but we were always in close proximity ready to follow the subject if they left the residence, also if someone picked up our decoy because they thought it was trash or something then we would politely explain the situation as much as we could and retrieve our equipment.... I have only worked 2 cases where we deployed this method... And hundreds of cases where it was not necessary because there was somewhere we could park and monitor what we needed to from the vehicle..... That being said I don't think that is what is going on here at least not for any legal purposes.... Probably the target because he is a business owner.... Might have saved himself a violent home invasion.... Hope they get some answers

That’s exactly what I would suspect! We are living very scary times with the cost of inflation, housing, food, and gas up to the roof. It’s becoming almost nearly impossibly for average hardworking Americans even middle-class folks to sustain themselves with such high cost. It would not surprise me that things will only get worst, and we will continue to see an increase of home robberies as people start to become desperate. We are living very scary and uncertain times.

Someone paid this teenager to put that there. Obvious. He said he owns businesses so it could be a disgruntled ex employee who gave money to a teenager to put the camera there because the ex employee knew he had cameras on his property.

You need more cameras to catch people with cameras. I hate it when those doorbell cameras have very low quality resolution. The government must mandate high resolution 8K cameras.

"That person" looks like a kid to me.
Could be completely coincidental that it's across from that guys house. It could be for another reason than to case his house. Has the whole street. Maybe they want to know if a particular car drives by at a certain time. Could be a husband checking out his wife's whereabouts, etc.

Wildlife cameras are about 30 bucks too. I wish that we could have camera sensors that would let us know if we are being filmed when in public.
