Having this as a fall back for turning a run into a no Save & Quit attempt from regular run is a rad strategy to mix it up a bit and not always just reset slower runs. Nicely done!
@@aaronmarchand999Yeah, to my mind the save&quit automatically makes it a segmented run, and those are treated VERY differently. But I don't write the rules, and the english Super Mario speedrunning community prefers it this way.
@@CptJistuceHere it is not even segmented, because save and quit is used to get to level you never were in before to begin with... Basically yog warp from world A to world C then save and quit, you the choose the world feature to start in world B, which you never reached but because you did reach world after it with warp you can choose it in the menu...
Changing the run you're going for based on how it's going is how basically every Spelunky HD speedrunner plays. All runs begin as no%. If damage is taken, it becomes low%. If a jetpack or a bunch of bombs or a teleporter appear somewhere, it becomes any%. If the door to the Black Market is found, it becomes hell%. And so on. I think it's a really good way to speedrun, because it doesn't lock you into something that the RNG may not facilitate and force you to reset. With that mindset already in my head, it makes complete sense to me to adjust the run you're going for based on how the time is stacking up. I hope this is common in all games, because it just makes so much sense.
It’s efficient and fun. It reduces stress because your not locked tone type of gameplay. This is probably how these games with rng were meant to be try-harded.
My suspicion is originally this WAS the main category, then there were heated arguments about whether the save&quit route should be allowed. The quitters won the argument, and they took over the main any% board. And now the original single-segment route gets the special "(no save&quit)" board because enough people prefer that style.
"Is 18:07 good?" Well, judging by the fact that this whole video is half a minute shorter than it, and I'm hearing this two minutes into the explanation part, I would guess: "No"
maybe im misunderstanding what you mean. If it helps clear anything up, I was comparing to the record with Save & Quit until I reached world A, and then I switched to the No Save & Quit splits
4:49 "Just for you, Selene" made me double-take, rewind, and check chat... because that's my name, and it's not common. I almost never hear it referring to anyone except me.
@Shaz8389 Viewed the Niftski vids way late but have been thinking about the eccentric speed runner. He finds the challenge more interesting than achieving records and has purposely sabotaged impressive runs. Imagine making profit in the stock market fast but since it was too easy you bought /sold in order to lose funds, perhaps it will be more fun to regain them later. Anyway, Kosmic is usually the most enjoyable speedrunner at any given time, best wishes.
>gave a legend another WR by creating a new category >promptly decide to take it away from him I'm gonna be nice and offer another category idea: Fastest 'maxout' (999,990 points)
Maxout is actually 9,999,950 points. An extra digit appears when you reach 1 million, and there's no way to score like 10 points, only 50. Maxing out the score counter is really boring and not interesting, but high score runs in general which ban just a couple things like farming koopas for points are great imo
You don't need to stall, fireworks happen if your coin count and the time remaining end in the same number. So here it happened because my coin count ended in 7 and I finished the level with a time ending in 7
@@kosmicspeedruns Makes sense. It was a bit jarring to me to have the victory fanfare cut off each time, but I guess I have a longer attention span than most these days. ;)
TBH I wonder if Luigi's just generally slower than Mario or if its just that he doesn't feel very good to play that makes people not want to play as him in speedruns.
Surely if you "save and QUIT" thats the end of the run... You've QUIT. If anything that would surely be a segmented run as you are QUITTING. What does the word QUIT even mean?!?
Segmented means multiple sessions, and repeatedly playing each one to make it as good as possible, and adding up the time of each segment to get your final time. It's basically a spliced run, but openly done in multiple parts. This is RTA- the timer starts when you start the game, and doesn't stop until you reach the end- however you accomplish that. There are tons of games which save and reset/quit for various purposes; save travel time, skip cutscenes, trigger glitches, rng manipulation. It's also really cool in this game because it distinguishes this category on the all stars version from the fds version even more.
Now new challenger coming? If Niftski joins, it's all over, so train well, Kosmic! Niftski only has 1 competition, which is Niftski! Good luck with the training, Kosmic! You may need it .. and i hope more will join you.
I'll be improving this World Record and breaking several others, follow me if you want to watch them live :)

Looking forward to the SummoningSalt covering the history of this WR in a RUclips Short.
He was in chat! "Votava in shambles!"
I bet he would if this was closer to April Fools lol
The WORLD RECORD that remained on top for 20 YEARS
I feel like Summoning could still do a solid hour on this somehow.

Classic music for the montage at the end
Indeed it is!

Hi, what's the music please. I'm sure I know it but I can't figure it out.

My goat kosmic, literally the best mario yt and gamer, much love as always ❤

Nostalgia everytime i hear the intro music to all-stars. Nice run man
SMB runners want their fireworks only after the run.
You can also play TLL in SMBDX for GBC
Only sort of. There are enough differences that it really is a different game.
worlds 9, A to D were never released though. so you wouldn't be able to do a D-4 run. the level data is in the ROM but incomplete though
If only premium cable (ahem) were as ineffectively blurred as the thumbnail's -3:06
06:19 Amazing fireball shot from mid-air :)
You think Tom Votava knew he still had a record?
I can't wait for there to be a "Quest to beat Tom Votava" video and it's just this video.
Damn, you know a video is old when a 20 minute vid is split into 2 parts
That 2004 speedrun is older than like 50 percent of speedrunners today.
No one talking about the "do do do dodo DO STOMP!"
Congrats for the WR 🔥👍
Excellent work! Kosmic should be able to maintain these records unless Niftski ever goes for them some day...
At this point Niftski is like trying to compete with a TAS he's so insanely fast

the fact that he had the record for 20 years tho :D
