  • This time on the bench we have a vintage Timex automatic wrist watch for restoration. The movement is more complicated than I thought and very interesting, without any jewel on it. Thank you for your time!

That's what I kept reading last weekend, but I decided to do the full disassembly on the date hand wind version of this movement. Surprisingly the bridge droped fairly easily. I had to fuss with it a bit, but it's fully assembled now and ticking away nicely waiting for the new crystal. I just got into watchmaking a couple months ago, so I really don't know better, but I fixed and services my first movement two weeks ago. After gathering tools and watching tons of videos, I said what the heck and dove in.

Agreed, I took your advice and cleaned the movement assembled, not a very successful I'm afraid as the rotor is still very stiff . I've put it aside for now. Not a very nice movement to work on.

I did the date hand wind version of this movement last weekend, fully disassembled, so I wanted to try the automatic version. It's cleaning as I type. Do you have the assembly Part 2 video in the works? I didn't realize that was not posted. Thanks for this!!

No, unfortunately I don’t have the time, maybe in the future I will assemble it

I know some guys who can take these all the way apart and put them back together. I am not one of them LOL. I clean the movement mostly assembled and that usually works.

I know. They do a full teardown and reassemble it like a master watchmaker on YT. I still can't do it after practicing for years. So frustrating!

    Post-op Status Update:
I actually got it back together after the full disassembly!! It was ticking away but the amplitude seemed low, so I unscrewed the balance screw to oil it and after that it never got going again once it jumped the pallet fork. The hairspring seemed out of whack, which makes sense because I bought the watch on ebay as a broken non-runner and when I opened the case, the pallet fork was floating around and was bent, but I took one of a doner I had. With the full service and new fork, it worked, but I think the hairspring was too shot to handle much. Anyway, I think that's a win! I am now working on the hairspring see if I can fix it, ;if not, I'll find a doner, but I am seeing this a challenge to keep going until I have this watch on my wrist.
All that to say, these watches are serviceable. You just have to be patient and learn it. I found the trick on getting the main plate and bridge back together too with the train, so that was cool.

Right? The thing is getting EVERY pinion lined up AT THE SAME TIME because there are no bridges, just one big plate. I think someone could get pretty proficient at it if they practiced. I just am not sure many people put in the time.
You get in even bigger trouble when you disassemble the old electric mechanical movements (dynabeat and pre-dynabeat). I ruined a couple (well, they were not doing well in the first place). I have never taken an electric one apart and gotten it back together, there are a few things that I'm not even sure are possible to get back together.

@@dskim24 You took the words right out of my mouth. Had very very limited success with the old Timex hand winds and even lesser success with the electrics. In 2024 though, I have noticed that more and more hobbyists have tackled these problems with the old Timex's and have successfully serviced the hand winds and electrics on YT videos.

Dang. I should have kept looking before I followed your video. Oh well, I have no choice but to figure it out now.
