@@ajaxslamgoody9736 I haven’t seen Riddick but I’m guessing it’s a bit different. There is some cool action in this book but it’s a bit more thoughtful and literary.
I'm about midway through this book and it's so good. Reminds me of Dune and Red Rising in all the best ways. Great review, I had to skip around a bit to not spoil things but I just subbed and can't wait for more.
That is awesome to hear! I have read the first 2 books and am currently 2/3 of the way through Demon in White and can confidently say it is my favourite current series! I think those are good comparisons that you made. The first book feels a bit like fantasy in space, and the second introduces some more ambitious sci-fi ideas. Let me know your thoughts when you finish Empire of Silence!
@@WordsinTime That's really good to know because I can see this series going places. Yeah, will let you know and looking forward to watching more of your breakdowns when I catch up
i started this book Wednesday and finished yesterday (Thursday) haha. took me just 2 days listening on 1.7 speed haha. i started book 2 today. I'm absolutely loving it!
Haha yes, it’s a losing battle with the TBR list. I always seem to add another 2 for every book I read. But this is a worthy addition! It’s my favourite current series.
Thanks so much Ron, I hope you enjoy it too! I’ve now read all 4 books that are out and it’s my favourite current series. I can’t wait for book 5 in December!
Hi Jonathan. Book 1 arrived Saturday. I've watched some reviews and peaked inside. I went ahead and ordered Book 2 and 3 based on my initial impression. I look forward to exploring this one sometime in 2023.
Question pertaining to that paperback you are holding. I have no bookstores so have to order blindly. One, is font tiny? Secondly, can you read through that fat book with breaking the spine? I am very intrigued but getting copies is difficult where I live and don't want ebook. Thx
I just took a look and I would say that the font is the same size as my other mass market paperbacks, so it is small but not tiny. I was also able to read it without breaking the spine, although there is a slight crease. I hope you enjoy it!
Good question! I don’t think it is overly dense. Before I read the books I thought they might be a dense read because of how long they were and how everyone talked about Ruocchio’s prose (which is fantastic). I was pleasantly surprised to find them rather readable. I would describe them as moderately dense at times, perhaps a little more dense than Red Rising, but not drastically. If you like fantasy and you enjoyed Red Rising I think this is the perfect next space opera to try!
@@WordsinTime And they have gorgeous covers, I like Red Rising and searching for more space opera and these beautiful covers caught my attention. I like good prose if it breathes life into character and world, just like Joe Abercrombie. I hope I love Empire of Silence.
@@muttineni03 I agree, the covers are fantastic! I haven’t read Joe Abercrombie (I’m focusing on sci-fi for now but First Law is at the top of my list for when I start to read more fantasy) but I think characters are a strength of Sun Eater. Just read the preview of the first 5 chapters of «Empire of Silence», were I caught: Jadd: The Jaddite Faith from several Guy Gavriel Kay novels (GGK’s mix of Christian Trappings and the Sun Cults from Antiquity: Unsurprising given Ruocchio have stated himself as a fan of GGK, with signed books by him) & Jeddah, an Ancient Port City in Modern Day Saudi Arabia Birth Vats for the Nobility: «Brave New World» by Aldous Huxley Hadrian’s home planet of Delos: Greek Island, Holy Site for the worship of Apollo and Artemis and the Athenian-led Delian League which fought Sparta in the Peloponnesian War of the 5th Century BC + The Name of the Mega-Corporation running the parks in «Westworld» Hadrian’s brother Crispin: The St. Crispin’s Day Speech from «Henry V» The Alien Antagonists, the Cielcin: Ciel (French: Sky) + sin (Mr. Ruocchio is Catholic, alright! 😄) Lothrian: Have some similar language structure as the Free City of Lorath from GRRM’s «ASOIAF» + Lotharingia/Lorraine in Modern Day France Hadrian’s family name Marlowe and their Devil Symbol: Christopher Marlowe wrote «Doctor Faustus», about the eponymous scholar who make a pact with the devil Mephistopheles (+ a reversed color scheme of the Manchester United Devil Logo, given the Marlowes’ English Ancestry?) The Mother of Hadrian’s Family Name, Kephalos: Cephalus, whom Socrates have a dialogue with in Plato’s «Republic». Cephalus give as a definition of justice «to give each what is owed to them», which Socrates refutes by saying that returning a borrowed knife to someone who has turned mad and might therefore hurt themselves, is not just…(cue philosophizing on justice and madness!😅)
@@WordsinTime To be fair I watched a bunch interview with him on beforehand, where he talked about being a fan of GGK and GRRM, as well as having an education in Classics studies, so it is mostly a result of me naturally looking up words or names I know I have (or have never) heard before and knowing where to look for them! 😄 I also did not want to cheat and mention the Mythical Figure Cid Arthur as a mix of Siddhartha (Buddha) and King Arthur due to the Empire being primarily a mix of British and Indian Culture, since that was something Ruocchio mentioned in his interview with «Talking Story» and something that straight away made me put the series on my TBR List! 😄
I believe the first release was something like 5,000 hardback copies (at the time he was an unknown first time author) and after that the publisher didn’t want to print any more hardbacks despite Ruocchio’s efforts to get more printed.
I've heard nearly all good things about this book/series. I may have to give it a try. I need some big & sweeping like that. I just hope it's not one of those, "all religions are the same/all evil" type of screeds. That would turn me off.
I think you will enjoy it! And no, it’s not like that in regard to religion. In fact, the Sun Eater novella, The Lesser Devil, explores the difference between the Church and the Chantry. I’ve loved the first 3 books in the main series and can’t wait for the 4th, which comes out in March. Let me know if you pick up Empire of Silence!
I think this book has a big pacing problem in the middle, where it's stuck in royal court politics. Thank the disquiet gods the world gets attacked around 80%.
I must be in the minority but I just cannot finish this. It is one of the most boring books I've read in quite some time. The writer is hugely talented but this plot drives aimlessly. I got all the other books in the set in hardback as a gift and I intend to sell them. Just can't.
Wow throwback. You've videos have come a long way mate.
Hahaha
This is such an epic series. Christopher Ruocchio is a master writer. I highly recommend it.
