The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a carrier capable, variable wing, supersonic, multirole, fighter aircraft developed by Grumman (now Northrop Grumman) for the United States Navy. The F-14 has over 160+ confirmed kills and was in service with the United States Navy for over 30 years. It is still in use a few countries.

its really quite scary how advanced this fighter was in 1960s-70s, and how in the last 20 years or so its only just become outdated
Still relevant, some systems can be updated such as the RIO getting a glass cockpit for ease of use. Grumman made plans to bring it to the 21st century. The only reason its no longer needed was it was designed as an interceptor and it was insanely expensive.
techniclly F-14 tomcat probably would still have been an useable aircraft for the past 10-5 years but the only reason it was retired cuz the F/A-18 super hornet was cheaper to maintain and could carry more modern weapons unlike the F-14. If F-14 wasnt this expensive it wouldve been still the best interceptor the USN would have owned by now
funny thing is from what I have heard, people are saying we retired the f-14 too early .

The fact there is no proper Military Aviation Archive with a good search function and both pictures videos and more details etc is so upsetting, there is so much nice footage out there of beautiful planes and other beautiful military vehicles aswell but its all just uploaded on random places.

The F-14 is a capable jet sad part is that it was too expensive the same promblem the F-22 faces today but the things used instead are not too bad either the Eagle is a capable heavy weight fighter and the F/A-18 is probably one of the best 4th gen 1 circle dogfighters. While the F-35 is also a good strike/multirole craft.
Still the Raptor and the Tomcat are may favourites due to both killing enemies before they even have a firing solution and for being good dogfighters too with the Raptor being better due to thrust vectoring and it's falling leaf.
Too expensive? Nobody but Pierre spray and russia says they're too expensive. Modern warfare you need expensive things because every superpower is rich with buckets of money.

the F-14 cost about 35 mil, the F-18 costs 65 mil

the "4,600 flight hours" isn't that per pilot? I'm pretty sure it's per pilot, because the tomcats needed to fly constantly or else they would start leaking from standing still.

@@The_Military_Aviator The legend Dale "snort" Snodgrass (callsign not drug related) logged in about 4,800 flight hours in the F-14 Tomcat, that's probably where the number comes from.
For comparison, F-15C pilots are proud to make it to 2,000 hours of flight time.
