South Africa's shark spotters back in action as great whites return | BBC News

  • Great white sharks have been seen off the beaches in South Africa's coastal city of Cape Town for the first time in more than four years.
    Some places, like coastal areas in South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal province, seek to tackle the danger by using nets and baited hooks to kill sharks, but this also harms other sea life, such as dolphins and turtles.
    The International Union for Conservation of Nature has said it strongly encourages non-lethal approaches to addressing the risk from sharks.
    In Cape Town, the approach aims to protect both sharks and people by keeping them apart.

      You could have shortened that to just don’t swim cause sharks are everywhere port and starboard are not… That being said it depends, go surf across town and you have no issue with sharks. Spots like blouberg or big bay have sharks but rarely any interaction. This is why knowing more about sharks is the most efficient way to keep both parties safe. The shark spotter project unintentionally make this rather easy. Each beach that has had or might have a problem are covered. Put those spots on a map and knowing there are sharks everywhere only certain spots stand out to be a risk. What do they all have in common? They are all wishing the facinity of a seal island. When sharks disappeared shark spotters had to move north and the demand for that help narrow down where the sharks had actually left to.

I left after my business was robbed under threat of shooting by 5 guys with AK 47s and pistols, this happened on a Saturday which I never worked and wife ran it then the staff were taken to the factory and my wife and young son of 12 were threatened with death for the money which she gave them and some products they took. The cops said i was lucky as at that stage they were killing the men needlessly. Well i sold up the business my house and left for fairer climes. If i say i don’t miss Cape Town where I was born and lived 50 odd years I would be lying but unless there’s a drastic change I’ll probably be buried in my new home of twenty odd years. From family and friends talk i would say probably better to make peace where you are. Cape Town and SA in general was a beautiful country to live in and bring up a family, if there’s a turn around in peoples attitudes to each other then perhaps it will go back to what it was, from what i hear though this is a pipe dream and it’s worsening every year.

Perfectly fine for anyone to be 1 on 1 with a great white as shown by the 100s of videos online of people swimming with them. The attacks only happen in ‘hunting grounds’, murky waters and when chumming at all, but especially near areas where humans frequent. We are the biggest threat to all animals on earth. Great whites need protecting from us as we cause climate change, destroy habitats, over fish, oil spills, hunt for sport, etc etc

    The loss of lives to shark attacks in Plettenberg Bay is sad and I'm glad that they have put the Shark spotters in place to deal with it. Sadly though, the loss of lives to drowning in the Plettenberg Bay area is much higher (three over this season already). Not enough attention is given to the dangerous swimming conditions and currents in this area. In my mind, it should get the same amount of news coverage so that people are aware.

      That's the because the Great White Sharks keep ramming innocent people off the road. Ever heard that familiar statement of victims saying they felt like we're hit by a truck under the water? That's because the shark was actually driving a truck into them.

    • @Spv1627
      @Spv1627 3 месяца назад +1

      These types of statistical statements are often used when referring to shark attacks, but the mistake is that you don’t adjust the odds dependent on the circumstances. Yes, driving is incredibly dangerous compared to swimming in the sea, but that’s because we all drive a lot of the time and it’s inherently dangerous. Your chances of being killed by a shark on land are 0, but your chances of being killed by a great white shark in that bay is relatively high. Comparing the chance of being killed in a car crash with the chances of being killed by a shark doesn’t really make much sense :p

      Well that’s a bit of a misinformed opinion. Actually having lived there fish Hoek has a dark history with great whites which in all fairness a lot of of the times was the result of people being stupid and not listening to shark spotters. Speaking of, fish Hoek is tricky for shark spotters. See other spots have the right conditions for you to see sharks a fair distance away and raise the alarm pretty early. Fish Hoek has a rather abrupt drop off so unless the shark is chilling at the surface you can’t see it until it’s already rather close if you see it at all. So in the end the net was deemed the best idea and it’s actually a rather small net that blocks off a tiny corner of the bay. To go back to your analogy it’s not like your front door was blocked off but a corner in your living room was blocked off. I usually don’t see nets as a solution unless you have nothing better but in fish Hoek it works nicely with the conditions.

    People always trying to make things harder. If you want to know if there's a shark in the water simply put both feet in the water for a minute or so then pull them back. If you still have feet, the chances are it wasn't a shark! simples...

    That sewerage water is so visible inshore in the Cape Town footage, keeps the swimmers out the water...else it kills more than the sharks do anyways, but then again getting shot on the beach is more a concern anyway..welcome to south africa.

    Great to hear the sharks are back, but perhaps not for the sharks... or the seals or penguins (has anybody told them?).
    SA always 50 years behind on the rest of the world on everything... shark nets kill indiscriminately - thousands of other non-lethal species die in nets every year. Many other ways to keep sharks away, councils too lazy & too cheap to invest in proper shark management strategies. Also, fisherman use that bach to fish, attracting sharks to the beach so that's not the shark' fault... and yes, we're intruding into their domain!
    Also, great whites have a complex breeding system so any female killed is a blow to this endangered species population. But CoCT not good with managing ANY of its urban wildlife - too stubborn to consult experts or ask for help.

    Its quite simple leave the getting in the water bit to marine biologists and oceanic experts if your a everyday citizen there really is no need to get into the territory of a man eating predator if you do you take your life in your hands and thats just how the situation is unfortunately swimming parks and centers are for leisure swimming not the ocean home to dangerous animals some you may not even see at the end of the day its sharks and other marine life that pay the ultimate price for our stupidity and that just cannot be right
