I had a 61 Biscayne, similar but different. Bought mine for $100 with a worn-out smoking 283 which drank oil, a powerglide which was on the way out, and a 2 barrel carburetor about the size of a silver dollar. Top speed was 65 or so downhill with a cloud of smoke behind you- only did that once. The manual steering was like 6+ turns lock-to-lock and you had at best one panic stop at highway speed before you had better park and let the brakes cool down. The radio still had tubes; turn it on and wait 10 seconds for it to warm up before it began playing. The only work I did to it was to repack the front wheel bearings (it still had ball bearings, not tapered rollers) and adjust the brakes when I got it. It took me to and from work for almost 2 months which allowed me to save enough money to replace it when the powerglide died then I sold it to the junkyard for $20 so I figured I got my money's worth out of it. Had it been a 59 I'd have probably kept it as love the cats-eyes taillights, the fins, and the rocket-ship fender markers in front.
WYR The Bel--Air (even though I'm a Ford guy) and the Studebaker which is a gorgeous car.

Jay, when you get a chance read 'The Cars Of Harley Earl' by David Temple.
One of the later chapters is 'Styling Thr '59s' and it covers the history of 1958 vs 1959. Bill Mitchell was Earl's successor and 1959 was a mulligan as the Forward Look 1957 MoPars dethroned GM as the style leader.
    1958 was the one-year-only as the 1959-60 are a 2-year body shell.
The rims on this car are the Corvette rallye wheels from a chrome-bumper era c3.
The Chevrolet bowtie in the speedometer face is the hi-beam indicator. The round circles flanking the odometer are indeed the turn signal indicators.
    FWIW.....I had a '60 Biscayne 6cyl/3spd when I was in high-school.

It’s always a treat when Jay reviews a car that I rode in as a kid…my uncle owned a 1959 Chevrolet and I rode in it a few times!…That also gave Uncle Bill bragging rights for owning the newest car amongst the family, which was a big deal back in the day!!...I have always admired the 1959’s styling and would definitely rank it in the top three most beautiful cars that I have ever seen!!!

The dash, and steering wheel , so cool, looks like a RACER! One night, while it was parked curbside infront of the house, some drunk, drove by and crashed into the left rear, and drove off, never to be caught. Next thing I remember is "Mom got a brand new'66 Plymouth Fury lll wagon. She loved that car, white with a red interior. I liked the ole' '59 Chevy.

It was a green '59 BelAir 4 door sedan that had probably been driven to the ground, and no longer in running order. The interior was in good shape and all the body parts were salvagable. The car likely got used as a parts car. My cars of choice would be the Fairlane and Hawk.

I have actually driven a '59 Chevrolet wagon. It was an old tired loaner at the time, and I think it did have sun visors, but I can honestly say that I've driven a '59 Chevy.
Years ago, my dad told me a story about encountering an old man in his '70's who had a brought a Chevy of about this vintage into the same garage where my dad had taken his car for service. The old man had been in before complaining that the Chevy unexpectedly cut out occasionally, and the garage had been unable to find anything wrong with it. Finally the mechanic thought to ask the old man at what speed the engine was cutting out. "Between a hundred and a hundred and five." The old man replied. The mechanic threw up his hands and said he couldn't help the old man, who stormed out in disgust.

When the big wigs at GM seen the Mopar cars they realized how far behind they were. They rushed to make a new design for 1959 that is why the 1958 car was a 1 year car.

Holy Bat Wing Jay! Those cars were the real beginning of "space-age" styling for GM. I'm pretty sure that the sun visors were an option back then, practically everything was! The little Chevy bowtie on the speedo face was also your Hi-beam indicator. Interesting that this car is the six! Would be a nice car with either the 283 or 348, especially! Those "cup" indents on the inside of the glove box door, remind me of the amazing number of drive-in restaurants and drive-in movies that were found all around our great land back in the 1950's and '60's. WYR Sorry GM, that 1959 Ford has that star-spangled grille! You know I am going to pick the Stude for #2!! One fineal observation on the Chev. When you showed the 1958 and 1959 together, you can see how the styling evolved from the 'shoebox" Chevy to the new 'space-age' look! Finally, you can schedule the videos whenever it's more convenient for you! I'll watch them after they first air anyway!

If you parked it on any grade in first gear without the parking brake set it would roll off. But it got to town and back every time. Besides the engine issue, it road and drove perfectly and was a straight body. I had plans to do a ring job, but we had to sell it I moved to Florida for a family health crisis. Jay, I have heard that story before, about how the back end of these cars would become airborne if you went to a certain speed.
I've always been on the fence about the styling of these cars. The tailfins and taillights were kind of over-the -top in my opinion, and the front grille always reminded me of a series of chrome nipples. Although I am impressed at how big and comfortable it looks. A second cousin owned one of these when I was a kid, and even then I thought that back end was too much. Still, it looks comfortable and there's great visibility.
Anyway, for WYR I would take the Ford, and either the Studebaker or the Chevy.

Had a friend that had a 1959 Chevy Brookwood sedan delivery. I think it has a 283, not sure which transmission, and it was painted solid black. I am told this former local vehicle is still in the vicinity but it's not being taken care of anymore. Sad but hoping someone wants a really unique visible vehicle and restored it back to a working, driving state again.

Thanks for doing this car. I love the 59 Chevy. Particularly the tail. I'm happy to see a low mileage 6 cylinder 3 speed that survived without someone swapping the powertrain. I'm not a fan of the wheels and white letter tires though. I'd prefer the standard wheels and hubcaps. I'd choose the Chevy in both WYR scenarios although I love the Silver Hawk too.

I think the 59 hands down for both WYR choices and I love the bel air model as the lines showed better with just enough chrome and the Impala had to much chrome IMO, 59 was a great year but my all time favorite was the 65 Impala SS in this color of blue seen on the 59. Thanks Jay 👍

In the 1960s the "rear end of the '59 chevy lifting at 100 mph" was an oft-repeated myth. I first heard that story about the previous year's model in the showroom when Dad was purchasing our 1960 Impala.

My second car was a ‘59 Biscayne 2 door six cylinder power glide.
I traded my ‘51 Bel Air 2 door hardtop and $250 for it in the Spring of 1967.
Being a dumb kid, I destroyed the transmission. It cost $99 to get a rebuilt power glide.
I got bored with it so that Summer I sold it and bought a ’60 VW Sunroof Sedan for$450.
That was just the beginning of me wasting $$ on vehicles.

Sorry, Jay, but the 59s are just plain phuggly. Didn't like them when new, don't like them now. Batman would love a 59 Chevy. Fun fact: all of the 59 full-size GM cars used the same front doors (2 and 4 doors used different doors obviously) as a cost cutting measure. GM got caught with their pants down after some GM execs saw what the 57 Chrysler cars looked like. They knew that their cars, which were all new for 58, couldn't compete against "The Forward Look". So, for 59, the stylists had to restyle the cars with very little time left. Remember, lead time for a new car was about 3 years. So, they had to restyle the cars quickly, and at great cost. GM decided that the 59 Buick doors would be used on all the cars, except possibly for Cadillac. When you showed the clutch pedal, and no floor shift, I wondered what would be under the hood. Ah, yes, the Stovebolt 6. WYR= Ford and either the Studebaker or the Rambler Rebel. NTT= no clue. Interesting video as always, Jay!

@@What.its.like. According to the chart at 1:42, you could get the top-dog 348 with the 3 speed. In fact, the 3 speed was available with any engine, as far as I can tell. I can also tell you, from experience, that speed or power shifting a 3 on the tree is not likely to go well on a first to second shift!
