  • I made this POV video to take you through the journey of Khumbu Icefall.
    JUST FEEL IT.
    The Khumbu Icefall is a treacherous and notorious section of the Mount Everest climbing route, located in the Sagarmatha National Park of Nepal. It is considered one of the most dangerous and challenging parts of the ascent to the summit of Everest and descent to the base camp. It lies on the southern side of the mountain.
    Ice Seracs: The Khumbu Icefall is a constantly shifting and tumbling mass of ice seracs, large towering blocks of ice that can be as big as buildings( upto 9 m high) These seracs are prone to collapse and can pose a significant threat to climbers passing through the area.
    Glacier Movement: The icefall is part of the Khumbu Glacier, which is always in motion due to its steep gradient. The ice moves at a relatively fast pace, making the route through the icefall unpredictable and hazardous.
    Crevasses: Deep crevasses (some over 45m deep) form within the glacier, hidden beneath the surface of the ice. Climbers need to navigate through a maze of these crevasses, which adds to the difficulty and danger of the passage.
    Serac Falls and Avalanches: The combination of the glacier's movement, the towering seracs, and the presence of crevasses creates a high risk of serac falls and avalanches. These sudden and massive icefalls can occur without warning, making it crucial for climbers to minimize their time in the icefall.
    Climbers use crampons and use ice axes and ropes to navigate the crevasses and steep ice walls. This requires technical climbing skills and experience with glacier travel.
    Due to the inherent dangers of the Khumbu Icefall, climbers aim to pass through this section as quickly and efficiently as possible during their Everest ascent. However, even with the best precautions and preparations, the icefall remains an unpredictable and formidable obstacle on the journey to the top of the world's highest peak.

    I just got done with base camp there's no words to describe how much more capable these sherpas are than ordinary people. Until you been in this climate and situation you don't realize these guys are superhuman.

      They're not superhuman, they come from the region. If you were in shape and spent 6 months there, you'd be just like them. Not taking anything away from them though.

      Remember too.. that ice is MOVING over four feet down a day. So it will be different when you climb back down a few hours later. This can be very dangerous cause the size of them causes almost explosions of ice blocks the size of cars. It’s a brutal place to be.. but beautiful like a dream. Surreal.

      That’s why they call them “Trailblazers” the guys who go up and secure the first fixed lines and carve out steps.. dangerous work. They also have to pick the best route.. which is nerve wracking for many reasons, the least of which if someone dies they’d have some guilt even though that happens often.

    Hrs breathing heavy because hrs probably exhausted from climbing down from jet stream altitude. Some people don't even make it back down to this part of the mountain. So he's lucky he's breathing at all. I salute you man. Everest Is no toy. The Himalayas are so awesome. Earth is such an amazing planet.

    • @c.a.1464
      @c.a.1464 Год назад +1

    • @Errcyco

      It’s also 50% of the oxygen then at sea level.. so it would be like you or I climbing up a hill but only can take one shallow breath every five seconds.. it’s brutal. And without oxygen your muscles can’t heat you.. so you freeze from the inside out.
      The Himilaya are a brutal place to find yourself.

    • @HighlanderNorth1
      @HighlanderNorth1 2 месяца назад

      Yeah, Earth is ok. But of all the planets where I've lived, I'd have to say that Neptune is better. It's a great place to live, once you've gotten used to breathing helium & methane instead of oxygen. Sure, music there isn't as good as on Earth, because every singer sounds like Alvin and the Chipmunks, but everything else is better.....

    Thank you for uploading this without music!

    • @MiffetBlue
      @MiffetBlue 9 месяцев назад +4

      I’m not a mountaineer either and I don’t know which is harder but I do know that most accidents/falls/deaths happen on the descent. Of course they happen on the ascent as well but most happen on the descent. Hope that helps! :)

    • @Errcyco
      @Errcyco 8 месяцев назад

      Decent by far. 75% of the deaths happen on the decent. Either people use all of their energy getting to the summit and die cause they can’t get back out of the death zone quick enough. Or, the traffic jams in the death zone causes them to run out of oxygen quicker than expected and they die on the way down. When your body doesn’t have enough oxygen the muscles can’t keep you warm.. you freeze from the inside out. 😮
      Remember too, by the time you’re coming down, your body is literally half dead.. so one misstep can have you falling over 10,000’ 😮

    I hate crevasses so much. I’d rather get crushed by a serac, or buried by an avalanche. I really struggle with them. Just something about being swallowed whole by a big crack in the ground. I try to stay as far away from them as I can, but sometimes they’re unavoidable.

I believe when they acclimatize and then make the push for the summit, they must cross the icefall around 10 times (5 up and 5 down). That is a lot! Way to much work for me. I’m not lazy.
